As I entered my treestand yesterday prepared for my 3rd all day sit in a row, I was reminded via Facebook (thank goodness for that, haha) of my one-year-ago memory. Not that I had forgotten or anything, just wasn't aware of the date... What a day it was! I managed to arrow my first Pope and Young critter who went on to place 2nd for Mule deer at the Colorado Bowhunters Association for 2017.
Yesterday, one year later, same stand, same date, this guy walked by. I don't know about you all, but after you shoot a giant, your standards change a little. Still being a little green with bowhunting and land and herd management, I almost let this guy pass. I thought he was too young and a little small-- oops, not so much. He bedded with several does 10 yards away for 2 WHOLE HOURS. I sat patiently and waited. I debated, weighed out pros and cons (right time of day, he looks young, but maybe he is old, he probably tastes bad, need to get back to the kids, etc. etc.) I finally conviced myself that if, AND ONLY IF, he presented me with a sure, short shot would I take him. You would think the does were on my payroll because just when I thought everyone was going to leave, a lovely lady brought him right to me. I had an 8 yard shot and it never felt so good!! He weighed in at 200 lbs dressed and when I approached him, everything I questioned went away. He was so cool with such uniqueness and I couldn't have been happier with my choice. Plus, what a blessing to have the time to calm the nerves and really think about what was about to happen. Sometimes that can be a bad omen, but yesterday it was perfect!

You guys are great!! We do joke about that property..it definitely is where dreams come true!! Don't worry though, it hasn't been without some heartache too over the last few years! Missed shots and a lost deer.. It is incredible to me how much we learn from this, like waiting for the right shot (distance and location) and making sure the situation is ideal for killing (time of day, temperature, whether or not I have help). I appreciate all your support and love looking at all the photos and stories!!
Congratulations Erin on another great mule deer!
Well done! Really nice write up!

Brotsky-- that is awesome! You know where I will be next year!!
If you’d give me one day each year to sit in that stand, I’d be willing to stay home and do the cook’en, clean’en and child bear’en for the other 364.
Beautiful bucks, Erin! The 2017 buck is incredible!
Congrats young lady. That's awesome. Your 2017 buck is just beautiful!
