Already part way in to our season before I have found time to make this post. So far we are batting 100% again on good lynx despite working with poor snow conditions the first 3 hunts.

How many of the lynx are bow kills?

What caliber is most popular with gun hunters?

lynx and handgun seems to be a good combination also. Tough to get handgun accross the border or do you provide one?

Do lynx taste as good as mountain lion? Anyone take the meat with them?

You Really are getting quite a few lynx are they that densely populated or you have an extermly very large area to hunt? Is the population still on the upswing with snowshoe hares or the up and down cycles are not noticed in your area?

Do they always tree or do the dogs bay them on the ground also? Do Lynx ever get into fights with dogs they seem like a timid creature to me. Do some dogs get more excited running lynx or cougars?

Do you let the dogs bite and pull on the lynx after the kill? The lion and bobcat hunts I have been on the dog handlers all did this, I was not to thrilled but no harm to the hide as I imagined would be. It’s there reward keeps them fired up for the next run. Thanks

Doug

Four archery lynx in 48 hours.
Doug, Very few are bow kills, arrows tend to make a real mess of the cat, we have had some archers but I recommend to guys coming they use a rifle. No handgun hunting in Canada I supply a 22lr for most hunters. Guys that bring their guns bring 17 hmr or 22 mag. Meat is just like lion but there is not a whole lot to them, we eat some in camp but the hunters typically don't take it home. There is a good density of lynx, they do follow the rabbit cycle in some areas, but in my concession the population tends to remain stable. I hunt about 250 sq miles when lynx hunting. Every once in a while the toms will try in fight the dogs it doesn't end well for the cat. I only let the hounds have a pull after the pictures, the hair is so fine it mats up really bad.

I have the same question that Huntcell asked previously. I have eaten Mountain Lion and really enjoyed it. Do you find Lynx to have a similar texture and taste?

18-Jan-19
It is the same, just not much of it.

You won't find a better outfitter. Doug is the real deal. One of the most knowledgeable houndsman I have met. Top notch across the board, from his hounds to hunting area and accommodations. If your thinking of going for a lynx, stop thinking and book with Doug-Skinner Creek Outfitters.

We are still keeping the 8 years of 100% success on lynx. Only three hunters left for the season, I hope we can get it done.

Awesome pics!!! For as much as I love to see a big lion in the tree, nothing cooler than a lynx or bobcat chase IMO.

I was lucky to kill a lynx on the ground (while driving in with dogs) with my bow a couple years ago. Shot was 20 yards and the bow did a real mess on the lynx. Smaller lynx too which didn't help (17 lbs or so).

Have shot 2 bobcats with my 22LR since then and I MUCH prefer it. Now I need to get busy and get both a lynx/bobcat mounted up, such cool looking cats!!

I saved 2 hinds and a front of my last bobcat (31 lbs) and plan to smoke them up whole and have a feast one day with a few guys. Looking forward to it.

Wow impressive cats. How many mtn lion hunts do you guide each year? What % kill rate? What % toms?

One lion I had a client walk away from! 6 or 7 year old tom. Not quite big enough for the fellow. His loss.

TMac, I only do a handful of lion/lynx combo hunts each year. Next year I am doing 4 (which are all booked up) My kill rate is not the best, with some clients leaving good toms in trees to look for one of those BC giants. I would say people leaving with big toms, about 50%. then about another 25% will take a younger tom just to fill a tag. I have killed 2 females in 10 years, one being this season. The biologists have asked for me to take a few in the future as I am the only show in town that hunts lions. Next closest guy is 60 miles away. So I may take more old females in the future. My tenure is the home to the Boone and Crockett #1 and has been for 40 years so booking cougar hunts is a breeze. I just find the hunters I get can be pretty picky and leave decent toms in the tree.
