I was just on google earth scouting and realized all 3 bull kills I was in on this year occurred within 1000 yards of private property, although we were hunting public land. Got me thinking, I wonder how many bulls are getting pulled off the private or taken on the fringes? So the question is this:
Did you kill your elk A) on Private land B) on the edge of public/private land...within 1,000 yards or so or C) Public land with no private in the near vicinity?
C), just like all the others.
C -- All Public OTC no private around!
1000 yards is .57 mile. There is a lot public land included in that follows into that.
I killed my bull on BLM that was probably less than 1/2 mile from private. Not really sure, but it's an area with a checkerboard of public and private.
Elk 1. 1/2 mile from private land, including my house. Elk 2. 1/2 mile from state highway. 2 miles from private property. 5 miles from my house. Elk 3 1/2 mile from Private as the crow flies, but down into a canyon up the other side and then down into a old homestead ranch headquarters. About a mile if you were to walk. 10 miles from the house
B for me. I was hunting a peninsula of public. The closest side of the Private was about 300 yards.
Within 30 yards of private for one and waaaay backcountry for the other
McDonalds parking lot in Estes Park.
The bull I called in for a buddy was near private.
The elk I killed a few days later in a different unit was not.
C. I killed a bull on private once. A nice one too but it was a boring and unfulfilling hunt. Gimme those mountains!
C - Where I killed this past year was 5 miles from nearest private.
A, but it was a walk in area with public access limited to the first four vehicles per day. Nearest public is some state ground about a mile away, BLM and USFS miles away.
About 15 years ago we were accosted by a landowner that told us "Don't hunt my boundary". He was parked about 1/4 mile into national forest land, just waiting for people to park on that public ground so he could harass them. It's amazing what a pile of elk will do to people.
Public with no private near
In a lot of the areas we hunt, there is checkerboard or strips of private that have to be navigated around. Even on backpack hunts miles from the road. I also have a few spots close to town that I can sneak in a hunt before or after work that have small chunks of public within mostly private holdings. Only takes one!
All mine have been public (mostly Wilderness areas).
All on public, over half very close to private.
I called my bull off of private land, a ways onto public land, and killed him on public. I did this in 2015 as well in a different state.
2 elk down (both not mine obviously) within 15 minutes, both less than 100 yards from private fence.
C.) at least 10 miles from the nearest private land.
Mine. public, 1 next to 4x4 road, 10,500 ft. . 1, 1 mile from road, 10,000. 1 Private half mile from bunk house 9000 ft.. I've helped with several from close to 4x4 road to about a mile public no private close.
As far as I can recall. Only one of mine was B (the first) the rest have all been C.
Letter B for my elk and letter C for my deer
Never killed a Bull on private. All public land DIY...
