I’m going for muskox this spring and have most of my gear other than mittens and a balaclava. So for those of you with knowledge what kind would you recommend and where can I buy or look for them.

I've had the opportunity to go twice on Nunivak Island, Alaska for Musk Ox. My go-to balaclava is the No-Fog Breath Deflector (it is very ugly but so far the Musk Ox haven't laughed at me) ha. I have done other hunts in Alaska during the winter and again this performed very well. It keeps your goggles from fogging and protects your skin from frostbite. I wear it with a very warm hat such as an aviator style/trapper hat. For mittens I use a pair from Outdoor Research. I like oversized mittens that I can then wear the Sitka shooter glove inside. When it's time to shoot I can pull my hands out of the mitts and not have skin exposed to the cold. I also like the strings attached to my mitts so they are with me when I pull them off. Another item I highly recommend is the Northern Outfitters Arctic Wind Anorak and Wind Pants. They make a tremendous difference in keeping you warm. Hope that helps.

I've used the Outdoor Research Mount Baker Modular Mitts on two spring musk ox hunts, they are rated to well below 0 and they've kept my hands very warm. Best of luck!

Northern Outfitters years ago had the complete "go to" Musk Ox set up...from boots to mitts. Guys would buy the complete set....hunt...then turn around and sell it to another hunter.
