2018 was a fun year for the Engel crew! We got to do a good bit of hunting and fishing and I thought I'd share a few of the pics from our year. I had a goofy amount of camera problems this past year, so some of the pics are crummy cell phone quality, but I did my best with what I had. Ryan, Morgan, and I got out to chase deer, bear, turkeys, elk and lots of fish. Below is a quick recap of the fruits of our efforts in the field and on the water.

2018 started for Ryan with a deer from the 2017 season. On Sunday, Jan. 7th, the last day of the ND deer season, Ryan made good on the one opportunity he got in ND for a deer. He shot this buck in the last 15 minutes of the last day of the season. Perfect! A great way to kick off 2018.

We made it through the winter by doing some trapping and ice fishing. The basketball schedule was very full for both Ryan and Morgan, so we didn't get to ice fish much. We did manage to pull of a double in a set of snares close to our house though. That was fun!

After that we moved into turkey season. Morgan put away the crossbow and picked up a real bow this spring. She put in a good amount of time to get ready for this and I was proud of her. However, she never did manage to get a shot. We called in two toms late in the season, but it didn't quite work out. So close!

But... in the end the bears were too darn smart for us. Most of our year was spent chasing the bear in the bottom two pics. He was a smart old dude on public land. He had outsmarted hunters his whole life. His wits and a very fickle wind saved him multiple times. One of the last times we hunted he was coming into the bait in the last 15 minutes of light. We didn't know this- hadn't heard or seen a thing. The silence was pierced by two growl-roars from less than 30 yards from us. To say that go our attention would be an understatement! We then could hear him clawing a tree from bout 60 or 80 yards away. In spite of the close quarters, we never laid eyes on him. Once it got dark and it was time to go, Ryan looked at me and said "Maybe you want to get down first." Bwahahahaha! Can't blame him...

That smart ol' bear outwitted us, but the chess match was sure fun!

Morgan said she would not shoot a doe that had a fawn with her. She stuck to her guns and passed at least a dozen easy shots at does that had fawns. We had close calls with a couple bucks, but she never got a shot. In the end, it got really cold and she called it quits with about a week of the season left. Can't blame her as the night temps were ending up well below zero by the time we would quit hunting. Still, we had a great season together.

Ryan was a persistent as ever! The kid has stick-to-itive-ness for sure! We sat one night in early November and he saw a good looking buck. He was about 50 yards from Ryan, but wouldn't come any closer. We went back the next night and each sat in the same stands (I let Ryan pick first and he chose what I was sure was the "right choice"). The buck followed a couple does towards Ryan's stand and everything looked perfect! I watched from about 100 yards away and was excited that he was going to get a crack at a good looking buck. Unfortunately, for no good reason the does took a hard left and walked right to the base of my tree, about 120 yards from Ryan. The buck, of course, followed. He stopped and made a scrape about 40 yards from me, then walked up a small hill towards the does below me. As he reached the top of the rise I drew and anchored. The does caught my movement and got really twitchy. The buck looked around like "what's going on?" Before he could react, the arrow was gone.

He ran 30 yards and tipped over! Soon Ryan came over to my stand. I felt TERRIBLE! He was too nice to pass up, but man did I want Ryan to shoot that deer. I wondered if he'd be jealous and a little mad. As he walked towards me he raised both arms in the air and gave me a huge smile. As he got closer he stuck out his hand to shake mine and said "Congratulations Dad, I'm pretty sure I heard him drop." It was an interesting moment for me-- I swelled up with pride seeing how he reacted to me shooting "his deer". Maybe a strange, small thing for me to make sound like it was a big deal, but to me it was and I was very pleased and proud of Ryan.

A few days before Christmas Ryan finally announced he was going to shoot a doe if given the chance. We took a buddy of his out one night and sat in three stands all about 100 yards from each other. We put his buddy in the stand with the best sign going past it. I let Ryan pick his stand, and he chose the one I would have picked. I took the left over stand. You guessed it, all 15 deer came right past me! A small 8 pointer was below me for 15 minutes. Lots of does and fawns mingled around me for even longer. Eventually they started to walk out past me and into the field. Once there, it was over for Ryan to get a chance. I decided to try bump some deer to him- I gently squeaked my boots back and forth on the stand. Several deer ran back into the woods and unfortunately didn't bump over towards Ryan. Soon they came right back down the trail to go past me. I squeaked again. Again they ran back into the woods. We did this several times, but finally one doe bumped over towards Ryan. After a few minutes she settled down and headed down the main trail Ryan was on. I wanted to take pictures, but didn't dare move and screw it up for him. I watched him draw as she went behind a tree. "Bwaaah", stopped her. She snapped her head in his direction and looked like a spring ready to recoil. I heard the shot go off an the sound of good contact from the arrow hitting the deer. Several deer tore out of the woods and into the field. I saw four deer go behind a clump of trees and three came out. A good sign!

From: Scoot
11-Jan-19
Ryan said he could tell the deer was super jumpy when he stopped her. He aimed a couple inches below her body line anticipating her to drop considerably at the shot. He played it perfectly, executing a perfect heart shot at 17 yards! Atta boy, Ryan! He was very pleased with how he played it and I was impressed he kept his wits about him in crunch time and understood that the deer would drop at the shot. Not a ton of 14 year old boys would play that one right (not a lot of 40-some year olds play that right!) No doubt Ryan would not have executed that scenario correctly two years ago.

Once we were both tagged out in MN we hunted the last two weeks of the ND season. On the final day of the year Ryan saw a "HUGE BUCK" (his very emphatic words), but he didn't come close enough for a shot. It was the biggest buck Ryan has ever seen and man was he excited! It was great to see him that excited as our season came to a close. I'm sure he'll be just as excited next year and hopefully we can put together a fun review story with plenty of hero shots next year too. Regardless of that, we'll keep on making some great memories and having a wonderful time. Thanks for following along with the Christmas card letter version (haha Will!) of our 2018 season. We had a blast this year and look forward to next year too.

Great stuff Scott!!! Congrats to both you and your kids on a great season!! I'm really really glad you shot that buck when you had the chance. I may be in the minority here, but I'm a firm believer that too many kids are being "set up" too much to the point of the parent sacrificing too much to get their kids success. It's important for your kids to see you have success too. Don't forget that they love you just as much as you love them and you are most likely still their hero. Watching you have success is really fun for them as well. I remember being about 15 and my dad and I kind of started bowhunting together. When I saw him shoot a doe opening day after both of us failing all the previous year my heart nearly jumped out of my throat!! I was so excited!!! Only reason for me to write this on your thread is so that you shouldn't feel one iota of guilt about shooting that buck. I understand that you had that feeling but don't be second guessing yourself. It's important that your boy doesn't see you pander to his every whim. All his successes are so much sweeter because of it. He certainly earns his success as a young man and he will feel that way because of it. Great job on the hunts and the parenting!!!

From: Scoot

Thanks APauls for the reply. I totally agree! I've definitely been guilty of exactly what you're describing. It's a tough balance to navigate- putting kids first but not spoiling them and encouraging entitlement and the expectancy of being top priority wherever they are and whatever they are doing. I'm doing my best! I guess shooting that buck was my part in trying to not create a completely entitled D! I still felt guilty about it, but I'm over it now!

Thanks for posting! Reading your year in review brought back memories of growing and bow hunting with my father. Some of my favorite hunts, were when I’d get to watch him from my stand shoot a deer. Here’s one from when I was about 16 years old, taken on Thanksgiving morning. Bone chilling cold out, I could see my dad standing for almost 30 minutes watching this buck run off other smaller bucks, until he finally presented a shot. I get goose bumps thinking about that morning. Thanks again for the read!

Embry, it's still kinda undecided, but it's not looking good. I tried to get my two buddies to join me down there on the way to chase thunderchickens in NE, but it doesn't look like I can make it happen this year. I either will end up going to Omaha or hunting/food plotting with those two yahoos. I can't ditch out on my two buddies, so I'll likely be chasing turkeys, working in a food plot, and drinking beer with them that weekend. It'll be fun, but I want to get to Omaha sometime soon too!

Enjoy your time with your buds and take plenty of photos. Us bowsite boys will keep the alcohol safe in Omaha.
