Took this desert mule deer on public lands in AZ...buck is bigger than the video suggests, just a monster body size. 23 yd. shot, called him in using my own voice and very satisfying to also use my own shooting method. Link to video: https://youtu.be/ugkEhSr-b_0

Didn't have opportunity to get him cleaned up as I would like...he did a nose dive thru a large clump of cactus...huge body size; likely an older buck and it took a lot of effort to haul him out.

David Way to get it done on a beauty desert buck. Would you mind giving us a few words on your longbow type/weight, arrows, broadhead etc. Thanks so much.

Sure. I prefer a draw wt. of around 50#, Beman Pro Hunter 500 shafts, 100 gr. brass insert, 125 gr. Magnus Killer Bee Stinger broadheads. However, on this buck I used Steel Force 4 blade bh. Instead of glove or tab, I use my STAR Method release. Light wt. leafy camo. I normally shoot recurve, typically short ones.

This longbow was a 57# Bob Lee Take Down, Micarta riser. That much draw wt. is not necessary, but I do very much prefer a heavy riser (for accuracy/stability).

Wow! Great buck! What do you mean by the STAR method? As a budding traditional archer I’d really love to hear.

The January bowhunting in New Mexico for Desert Mulies was one of my favorite hunts ever. Hunting waterholes worked for my buddies but I loved stalking and calling. They are some of the easiest deer to call I’ve ever hunted. I love that hunt. Congratulations. Alan

Bassmaster, if you go to YouTube do a search for "Desert Mule Deer Taken With Longbow". Spike, they are different subspecies...some differences in behavior as well as habitat of course. IMO, the desert mulies are much more like whitetails in their home range and core range size vs. Rocky Mtn. mule deer. I also think they are smarter or more skittish. But it really depends on the area and how much hunting pressure there is. Another reason they are challenging to hunt successfully is they are rarely abundant.
