What’s the status of the caribou hunt out there? It had been shut down on federal land in the past..

It was reopened with some limitations on where NRs can hunt and now 1 bull instead of 2. There's still plenty of places to go. Some of the ground in the Kobuk Valley and the Squirrel River drainage around Kiana was put off limits to all but qualified subsistence hunters. Much of the stuff in the passes is still open.

The elders have resolved and asked that all hunters not shoot the first animals of the herd in a group and instead allow the first to pass in order to not interrupt the migration.

The general shift over the past 10 years is for the herd to migrate south along a route further east than it has in decades past with the migrations down the Noatak and Squirrel rivers moving farther east towards Ambler on the other side of and through the eastern portions of the Kobuk National Park.

The herd has been declining, but in the past couple years has stabilized in the 220K range.
