2019/2020 Az Applicants
Elk

Just got off of the phone with Savannah at the AZGFD. She informed me that if I wanted to purchase my Az license today, that I should enter 02/12/2019 as the date that I want my license to start. By doing so, I will be able to pay for both my 2019 elk tag application fee AND my 2020 elk tag application fee on this year's license. Just remember that the 2/12/2020 date is probably the VERY last day that you will able to apply for your 2020 tag.....so don't drop the ball..... Just thought that I would share.....
Your hunting license just has to be valid the day you apply? Correct?
No, the regulation states it needs to be valid on the last day of the app period. And, Feb 11 will be the last day to apply in 2020.
It's been discussed on here for years, some are scared, some aren't. I will tell you, there is ZERO risk.
I've done it the last couple years, works just fine. Get my points every year.
This works because it’s a 365 day license and next year’s deadline is presumably the 11th? (Last year 13th, this year 12th, etc.)
But one just has to be mindful of when they reset the calendar, correct? Going from the 8th back to the 13th for example...
The problem is that if you're going to app for deer/sheep in 2020, you're still going to have to buy another license.
Works for elk and lope but you will miss points for everything else every other year.
So if you draw in 2020, you will just be required to buy your hunting license at that time?
Link, Unfortunately, that is NOT the case. Your hunting license has to be valid as of the deadline date. The deadline date is always the second Tuesday of February....the deadline date for 2020 will be 02/11/2020. By having your license start on 2/12/19, you will have a valid license for next year. This year's deadline date is 2/12/19....so by getting the license dated for the 12th, you'll have a valid license for both. Oops.....should have refreshed my screen before I responded to Link, WapitiBob already had it covered.
Nick, If you were to draw an elk tag in 2020, you would just need to have a valid 2020 hunting license on your person, when you went afield to hunt next Fall. You can buy it anytime after you learned that you drew, and before you step out to go hunting.
gotcha. When you're close to drawing, it's kinda scary risking losing 2 points for an $80 savings!
So I bought my license on 2/13 last year and it states it is good through 2/12 this year. I was just going to buy another license today as I do every year. You're sure I can just use last years license to apply this year and if I draw I'll have to buy another license before I go hunting?
Okay, I looked in the regs on page 10 and it is just as you described.
"What are the License Requirements? When applying for a hunt, you must have a license valid through deadline day of that draw. If drawn for a hunt permit-tag, you must also have a valid license at the time of the hunt. These may not be the same license. Please contact customer service if you have any questions. "
Looks like this will save me a couple bucks, thanks for bringing this up!
Griz34, I completely agree with the last sentence that you had in quotes. If you have any questions, please contact customer service. The number that I called was (602) 942-3000. Then, I believe that I selected option #2 after the first voice prompt, and option #3 after the second voice prompt. I spoke with Savannah, and Barb. Both were quite helpful, and while I called twice because I had a question that I forgot to ask the first time, both people not only answered both of my questions completely, their responses were extremely similar and corroborating.
I don't go for just the point code, I go for the actual bull tag so I just buy my new license every year and use it for all species that I apply for.
Kinda better safe than sorry for just $160.00...………
Plus, I woudl hate the system to overload on the last 24 hours and not get in my application just to save a few bucks~Loyalty point and if not drawn, that years point....
Good luck, Robb
Robb, you don’t have to apply on the last day.
A few years ago Arizona extended the deadline due to website issues. Because of this my license was no longer valid on the “new” deadline. I panicked and bought a license but there were no issues for those who didn’t. This is a safe method and has been for years. But, if you are building points for multiple species it doesn’t do you much good.
Robb, As NW said, your license just has to be valid on the last day of the application period. You can apply on any day of the period, no need to wait for the last day.
Medicinemann, If you got similar and corroborating answers from two different customer service people at AZ G&F, you should buy a lottery ticket!
Well I am very thankful to ya'll and I certainly with toss it around before I make any final decision.
I am a pinch Superstitious though!! haha
Good luck, Robb
