First and last elk pic challenge
Elk
Contributors to this thread:
Let’s see your first archery elk and your last archery elk. To see how far we have progress. It’s cold and we need some elk photos ! Hunt
My first. Sept 15 2001. So happy!
My last . Sept 1 2018. Doubled up on opening day.
Hope it is not your last great plus the story that went with it Lewis
First Bull- 1998...Last Bull- 2016.
The little 3 x 5 came in super aggressive...he had one cow, and wasn't about to give her up! Adrenaline was pumping, and still does, with every encounter!
My first from 2009. OTC in CO, my first elk hunt. Talk about luck
Also a testament to something often heard on Bowsite. . . "Just go." I purchased nothing for this hunt for elk specific other than a cheap pack, a tag, a sleeping bag, and a bivy sack. My buddy and I shared a little stove. It was all whitetail gear. The brush shredded my cotton clothes :)
My last. 2017 in the same OTC CO unit as the above.
Funny thing, I've had some great elk tags. But I keep striking out in great units, and am 3 for 4 in a CO OTC unit. Go figure . . .
First Bull with with Archery equipment 2011. Last bull this last season
Not much has changed except I have shorter hair and a much nicer truck!
Not my first, but the earliest I could find. This little guy's from 1990. Couldn't have been happier if he'd been a 350 bull...well, almost. ;-)

This past season's bull
The hair's grayer and I no long wear face camo, but I still love chasin' these critters as much as I ever have. Only difference is, I now take the time to enjoy every second of the season rather than "I gotta kill something" being my sole focus
Two firsts - elk with a longbow in 1996 and mule deer with a recurve in 1990

First archery elk was OTC, public land in Colorado in 1996 with a 70# Bighorn longbow. Have the field pictures somewhere but I think they are slides.
The mule deer beside him is my first archery mule deer was on public land in Texas in 1990 with a 40# Redwing Hunter recurve.
My last archery elk was in 2017, Limited draw Colorado, public land with my homemade 60# longbow.

10 elk later, I killed this cow. So I upgraded my tablefair but not my antler size. What, you can's eat the antlers????????

"same hat both pictures"?
BigOzzie, it's truly my "Lucky Hat". Lost it on a mountain in Colorado about 15 years ago, and a buddy of mine found it the next Season. I rarely hunt without it!
Well 2018 was my first and last. So jealous of you guys that have been hunting elk forever. I hope to have a ton more years to pursue these magnificent ctitters.
Couldn't get the pic to attach on the first try.
First elk with a bow (1991), and last elk with a bow, both 6 x 6's barely! I've hunted a number of units in between, and taken a few nice bulls, but both my first and last bull were taken in the same unit in AZ (and I believe are my only two bulls from that unit).
Awesome stuff
I’ll have my first on here some day
Classic elk hunting gear; cotton t-shirt, fleece jacket, cotton pants and rubber boots. First elk hunt and it ended the first legal minute of the first day of the season, ran and died side of the road.

Lou, in that first photo, was there a guy behind the camera under a black blanket holding up one of those giant flashes that made a "poof" sound when it went off?

Some of you have gotten old between elk. I don't know where a picture is of first. But I'd guess 12-14 years between and I have not aged a bit. ;)-
Second elk from 1989. Shot a spike in 1987 but don't have a photo.

Here is my only archery bull. I'm not much of an elk hunter. It was 2014 or 15.
Hell of a bull, Branden! Looks like you’re off to a great start!
Love the old photos and the new ones. Keep them coming guys ! Hunt
Not my first archery kill, I think it was my 2nd?
and my last - 2017. I like killing cows :)
Plus, it helps to have 2 elk tags too!
Shot this small bull on my farm in KS many years ago. I’m the guy 2nd from the right.

Thanks. I've got a few more rifle elk. It was my second choice bull on that hunt. And by the time I killed him he was broken a little. Its just hard for me to want to chase elk with a bow when there are velvet mulies :)
I can understand that concept for sure! Love those fuzzy horn mulies!

I’m getting a kick out of seeing that some of the guys I know were actually young at some point in their lives:-)
I wish I had photos of my early stuff. All great pics! Awesome
Looks like I need to up my game on my "Last elk pic." Think I'll be drawing a tag this year.

My First archery elk was one of those challenging hunts where I really learned a lot about the animal and myself, a very rewarding hunt. Tule elk FHL 2006
After 2013 I shifted focus from elk to mule deer, then other big game. helped out a lot of friends on limited tags, and filled the freezer with rifle cow tags. Also my oldest son started hunting and a lot of time went to making him successful. Makes me think its time to get a big archery bull.... only if there is time left after Dall Sheep, Mt. Goat, and Brown bears and Moose!

Instead of my own elk I'd rather share my Son's elk. Nothing makes me happier or prouder to see his success, the kid is a machine! Here's his 2nd elk & last elk, I don't have a photo of his first one, it was 29 years ago he's 13 here in the early photo. Here's 28 years later with this years elk.
Huntman (Hunter) My Son's later photo sure has a resemblance to what you look like now in your this years bull photo!

I get it. I look old on last pic. That is what hunting steep terrain and packing elk meat does to a guy. (Otherwise I would look 29!)
Great thread, I will contribute one date.

You don't look older, Z. You just have a shorter haircut! lol
Shot a couple cows before this one over the years but didn’t take pictures. This was 2015. Wasn’t feeling great and ended up having an appendectomy a couple days later. Son in law helped me quarter and pack.
2016. Same son in law helped track and pack along with my daughter. This ended up being the best eating elk I’ve ever killed. Previous elk, this one, and a small rifle bull from 2014 were all shot within a 5 mile radius.
