2019 Sheds
Whitetail Deer
Contributors to this thread:
Thought there was already a shed thread but couldn't locate it so thought I start a new one being that time of year...
This one was found on a job site by a coworker friend Friday the 15th as we were lacing fiber optic cable out in a open field next to a shopping mall readying to hand pull the cable... I was probably within 40 or 50 yards of it and in the short grass/weeds but didn't notice or see it but I wasn't looking or expecting to see a shed in the middle of a city in a busy commercial area... After, I looked around and there ain't much places for this buck to live or hid, there is very little cover... Will be a dandy this year, kinda would like to see him with his rack and wonder if the other side matches...
First one of the season. Wasn’t looking but rather out pulling some cameras.

Nice. All that I've had on trailcam are still holding.
Been too much snow here to find many, but they are starting to show here and there. Good luck to all you shed hunters out there

Checked 6 cameras today. Lots of antlers still riding around he farm on their heads.
Probably on the ground a couple weeks at most.

My boy and I hit it this weekend - the squirrels did a number on this set!
Hell of an 8 CJE!

Still snow up over the bellies of the deer strolling around here in MN. Gonna be a few weeks .... even with the best weather conditions.
I'd love to get my pup out to look but no way am I putting any pressure on our herd right now. Snow is balls deep on the bucks and you all know about the cold. Might have to look in late March but not even considering it until then. Hopefully a lot of folks follow suit in areas where winter is getting long.
I was finding them in late January but we just keep getting snow and cold in Montana...….they're buried right now but it was starting off great.
Awesome! Keep the pics comin!
And yes, there should be a shed hunting thread for darn sure!
Man, I've never found a matching pair together like some of you do. Seems one falls off and the deer keeps walking with half rack for a day. Even in beds, usually just one if I'm lucky. Some great finds so far.
First one. Looking forward to seeing what he looks like....
In about 4 years:-(
Found this guy this morning along with another small one.
Went back this afternoon on my own time trying to locate the other side of the shed posted up top, no luck... Checked out the area a little and amazes me a buck that big can live in a metropolis around that many people with so little cover...
Couldn’t believe what I saw

Loved pulling these out of the crusted snow.

This was my first walk of the year almost seven mile trip

The only pair I found BEFORE all this snow were still attached to the deer! A shotgun season victim by the looks of the holes. And it wasn't a legal deer here either with our antler point restrictions!
Last weekend. Up to 7 so far in NY
Nice find Adam, same with the rest of u guys.
Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then Alexis!
Good luck this year with those beautiful bears up there in Manitoba!
Bumping this thread up to the top....
Zip zero nadda so far, but only been out once at night. Nice NY finds...
Decent set. Most are still holding in our area.
WOW that is a great looking set!! Any pictures with a beer can next to them for reference?
Sorry SD I don't have a beer can pic to relate to mass. I am not a P&Y scorer by any means, but the right side scored 69 7/8ths and the left was right at 68. I am really excited to see what he will look like next year!
WOW he's going to be a STUD next year! Congrats on the great find.
I am up to 23 as of last night. 4 sets
Nice finds, Chris!
Boone at it as usual! You are now known as the "shed man". :)
Tough finding em in this stuff. I spent a few hours dragging a few hundred pounds of sunflower screenings back into the bush to try and help out the 5-10 does I’ve been feeding through the winter. Temp this morning was -30 without wind and snow is knee to above knee deep out there in the bush.
Nice finds Boone!
Thanks Rick! Missed seeing you and Lana at the Convention.
This is the only one I have seen.
Found my first “hanger” yesterday
Found one from last year about an hour ago.
Found a nice matching set today.
Thanks Adam, too much snow here to look for horns good find everyone.
Too much snow in MT still but we are finally getting some melt off. Elk should be going good in a couple weeks. Seen a few shed bulls but I aint going up after them yet.
My son and friends had a good day on our IA and MO farms.

Found 9 so far this year.... The last two...
Another walk turned up this pile
Takes a good eye to find spike sheds, Shug!
Yes Jeff... but I always wonder how many 60” antlers I missed
Top this. My daughter and I spent 3hrs in a secret spot a year ago and this was it! And it was on the way back to my truck.
And one I found last year. Amazing when u think about it.
How’s this Whocares. I found this one out in SW Nebraska while I was trying to belly crawl up on an antelope several years ago. I found it about 5 minutes after I just about put my hand on a tiny (6” long) prairie rattler on the same sneak. He only had one button on his rattle.
Charlie will probably be along soon and submit pics of the matching buttons he found and outdo all of us ;-)
t-roy, if i'd have put my hand on a baby rattler the stalk would've been over. The momma had to be around somewhere!
Who cares and T Roy... 10 years ago in west Texas looping around in rocky terrain on some Javalina glance down to watch my footing and something catches my eye. I pick it up and it’s a small piece of busted tine.
It must have been there for a wile as it was chalky and cracked...

Shug....I think that tiny shed that I found had been there for several years as well. It was in similar condition as your tine.
Nebraska flooding just ruined any opportunity for shed hunting this year. Maybe the morel season will be good?
My boy yesterday - he spotted it just before I did - man was he proud! Great bucks, fellas!

Nice sheds everyone. I am at 41 and counting.
It's all relative...…...in the extreme south and areas back east, finding a handful is success. In the Midwest, 30-50 antlers with a few big ones is stellar. Here in the west, we measure in the hundreds between deer, elk and moose sheds. My buddy in eastern Montana found over 400 mule deer sheds last spring and is over 60 this spring and just starting now because of heavy snows.
In the Midwest, I like winter browse like locust groves with bean pods and sunny openings for deer to lounge. Winter grass varieties that are sprouting in woodlots and fence rows. Also, certain types of vines? that grow in the woods attract deer as well. Obvious crops like unplowed soybeans and winter wheat are near the best and think NIGHT. Where are the animals moving around at night when they're active. These can often be low spots (moisture is collecting) and waterways in large ag fields.
The right antler on this one was 102 inches...…..I spotted that side driving down a black top road going 55 mph laying out in corn stubble. The other side was 85 inches and was on a travel route going back to the timbered ridge behind the ag field.....picked the following day. circa 1995
The big ones are sore thumbs and easy to spot if they're around:)
My youngest son's first shed today. Priceless:)
Finally found one, only been out a few times. I missed this buck last fall. They are as tough to find here as a tick on Cousin It. Found 4 dead deer, from coyote predation, though. One a button buck. I encountered an unafraid coyote a couple weeks ago, so I toted the Winny along in case I saw him again. Did not...
Three more this weekend. Best I've ever done in NY. Not done yet either.
A dink on a bright sunny day in the woods with leaves and scattered skiff of snow. You have to walk right up to these. Just luck.
Went out for a couple of hours Saturday. Nothing very large but still fun to find a few.
Wife found one yesterday taking the garbage can to the road....snows finally melting! I looked around a few spots, but nada today. A lot of snow still out there in the woods .
My wife and I went out over the weekend and found a few more. We hit 60 for the year.
Very nice, Boone! Lots of matching sets to boot!
I noticed that you put the biggest matched set in the front. Somebody will probably be along soon to accuse you of the equivalent of longarming it! ;-)
Thanks T-roy. There will always be that one person. lol
Takes a pro to find these... :)
A little fun on April fool’s day :-)
Them little ones are tricky Rick. I found 16 more over the weekend, up to 76!
3-4 mi. of hiking and 3 hrs....net results,...three! Nothing notable. Still 2-4 ft. of snow in a lot of the woods . Gonna need more thaw time!
Good day.
Good day.
Went out Saturday for about 5 hours. Always great to see that the up and comer bucks you passed up made it through the winter!
Not sheds, an up and comer that didnt make it. Found this afternoon near an orchard and suburban area, along with a xbow bolt a few hundred yards away from it. Not incident-related probably. Could be I guess.

Don't be jealous of my monster sheds, Troy.
Nice drop tine, CM! ;) I AM jealous of that one... I like the human population distribution in that country too.
Nice haul 5575. Rick, I love the little dropper!
3.5 year old. Rhode Island
Hope I see him this fall:)
Nice work Boone, you guys are doing very good!
Man, some of you guys found some nice ones... Congrats...
Charlie - Am guessing that's from a button buck, a very lucky find... Curious if you found it? I know a deer farmer that's had captive button bucks for years and told me he has never been able to find one of their shed buttons...
Charlie that may be a Connecticut buck extremely hard to find!
No wonder folks don't kill bucks in Connecticut, they think the 1-5 year old bucks are does.
zbone, I don't think it is a button buck, but a 1.5 year old actually. Button bucks don't grow antlers, they just have budding pedicles covered with skin where the antlers will grow from. :) Charlie, I thought I had the smallest one I ever saw, but this one beats it. If I can find a pic of it, I'll post it. Good eye, Man! How did you find that?
It’s a button buck. I’ve seen several like that when I lived in NY. Future Booner if he moves to Iowa.
MQQSE, are these two button bucks then?
Those look like they’ve been cut off the skull to me. I don’t see any pedicles on them. I could be wrong, though.
They are cut off the skull, but I always figured they were yearlings, not button bucks. The deer were too big to be BBs. The little shed posted also looks like a yearling to me, but I could be wrong...its been known to happen. ;)
TrapperKayak - Button bucks shed their buttons, ask a deer farmer... Have seen button bucks 6 - 8 months old with protruding bone through their skin atop their pedicle...
Not mine, I don't shed hunt. This is from a friend of mine.
Irishman, I sure miss doing that! Is that your buddy's haul from this year? Seems a bit early for that many. Wow!
Zbone, I believe ya, just never saw any of 'our' button bucks with real bone yet, just bumps under the skin.
Holy Man U guys done well on the finds, I have put in some miles looking just found a dead four pointer.
Buck we were pretty sure was dead just hoping to find
Yup, looks dead to me. LOL
I looked all over but couldn’t find the match
I looked all over but couldn’t find the match
You Illinois guys must be overrun with deer and not many squirrels either by the looks of the quality of those sheds. You 'boone' guys are cleaning house. Those all from this year? Sheesh...
Found my 7th shed. All left. 1:128 chance statistically. Now why can’t I draw a sheep tag???
Our place in Tennessee found while doing prescribed burn Lewis
Well these do sorry about that
Charlie Rehor that little shed is an awesome find!
Well, I broke my personal best record last night after finding 5 more sheds, so I am at 83 sheds for the year, so far!
Saturday was a darn good day.
Found this Friday evening. Wished I would have found him when he was still a live and bow in hand. 164"
TJF.......Those dead heads are always kind of a bummer to find for sure!
t-roy that is for sure. The next day I found another pretty good one that was really bleached out on some state land. Found a big ant hill and planted it on top. Should get a few hunters when they come over the knoll and look down !!
Trapper found the match to my target buck yesterday in a 45 minute hike. That was my goal this year, to find both of those.
The first one 5 weeks ago.
Its bigger than the pic makes it look. Pretty good one for my immediate area (out behind the house). The set. Meager as it is, this is my best shed season in NY locally.
He is still on his feet, He will await your prowess this coming season. Good luck.
I found this. I really hope he gets bigger this year.
I found one while bush hogging corn stalks, should have been looking closer
At least you didn’t find it with the tractor tire, EE!
My son found the match flyer side this weekend from a mule deer single I picked up last fall elk hunting. Amazingly, they were in good shape and excellent color even laying out six months and one year on the sides.
My son had a good day of shed hunting.
Nice mulie set roughcountry. Its always a bonus finding the second side weeks or even months later. Know the feeling. Here is what I'll be focusing on all year, and after him this fall. He and I have a brief one-season 'history' now. Hoping to continue the relationship.
Found this nice 4 while I was baiting bears.
