Another story....

This one time...in band camp....

Really, this happened...Long time ago, around the time Jane Fonda was making her workout videos (picture this, as it becomes important to my story)...yes...that long ago Eyad, I was probably 20 years old...I was sitting in a treestand in late October. It was early morning and I was set up well before daylight. It wasn't a particularly remote spot, but it was a place that I wouldn't expect to see a person in the woods that early and I could have NEVER guessed I would see what I saw that morning.

I had shooting light now for about an hour. It was a rather crisp morning, but it was a clear, calm day with lots of promise for a great sit. Some breaking branches on the other side of the thicket caught my attention. I grabbed the bow off the hanger, thinking I was about to see some pre rut chasing, but.....W T H???? A middle aged guy in those high slit, chartreusy colored running shorts, wearing a shiny, silky looking black jacket and what looked like, I don't know.....disco boots, yeah, disco boots and he's rolling a rimless tire through the woods and past my stand. Like I said....W T H?? I'm speechless, and can only watch.

He rolls the tire to within 25 yards of my stand, looks around the little clearing, gets a little "this'll do" look on his face and flops the tire down in the weeds. He then goes back the way he came and I'm thinking..."What the hell did I just see?" I figure I was just part of an episode of the Twilight Zone, or maybe I just woke up from a weird dream, which made me question all kinds of things about myself if that is what my dreams looked like.....when....Here he comes again!!

This time, he's carrying a big, colorful man purse over his shoulder, like a bag you would bring to the beach with your beach stuff in it. I swear, this is all effin' true.

He sits on the tire, reaches into the bag and pulls out a blanket and spreads it out. He then takes off his disco boots, reaches into the bag again and pulls out and slides on these big, poofy purple leggings, like in the Jane Fonda workout tapes!

I finally came to my senses and become absolutely certain I was about to see something that would likely cause irreparable emotional harm. I simply said..."What in the F_ _ _ are you doing?" He about jumped out of his skin and those purple leggings!! He ran out of the woods, left his blanket, his tire and those disco boots right there!

Thats it! To this day, I have no idea where he came from or how he accessed those woods that day. There is nowhere to park near there. No idea where the tire came from. The area he walked through is head high multi flora. Most people walking through there with brush clothes on and prepared for a battle would still need a transfusion after tackling that thicket. He went through it 3 times, barely clothed, wearing disco boots, rolling a tire, without a scratch.

Yup. Scary stuff in the life of a NJ whitetail hunter.......

Back in the 80s there was a murder, dismemberment and body was dumped on a property I was hunting with a Co. sheriff and a police Academy trainee. Apparently a pheasant hunter's dog found it in a bag. I remember Dad and I talked to the property owner about 3-4 months later about the upcoming season and if he was still giving permission to hunt. Nope, not the way the local media treated him. He had absolutely nothing to do with it but they leaked the info before they had killer(s) in custody, and all the facts- scared the crap out of him and his family. As I recall the perp was going to spend 35-40 years in jail. That's about 35 years ago now.. Wonder if he died there, can't seem to find anything on the internet about the case. Last I checked owner is long since dead and family moved out of the area. Still a nice looking woods though, drive past it all the time..

I never found a body or body parts but have found a doll hanging from a tree by a noose, a 110qt cooler stashed in some very nasty stuff with a huge rock on top of it, (which I left and didn’t open), a very large blue “adult toy” and some magazines in a small clearing deep in some thick brush, and a note on another hunters parked truck telling him he’s being watched every night as he leaves his tree and walks to his truck. All pretty spooky stuff I thought.

10-Mar-19
Nothing scary, but interesting sighting. On a city hunt I watched a guy and gal walk down the path to 70 yards away while she proceeded to give him a hand. Thought about yelling “my turn?” When he was done..

This thread reminds me there many more motives to hiding in the woods than killing a critter. It also reminds me why I don't hunt in NJ.

Spending my life in colonial VA, it was rare but not unheard of to walk up on a cluster of headstones in the middle of the woods. Usually, there is at least an abandoned farm or old road in the vicinity. Twice, however, I've stumbled upon graves where there was nary a of remnant of either. A lesson in the passage of time and the reclamation power of nature I reckon.

The strangest thing I've ever experienced happened when I was 15, so this would've been around 1990. It was a morning hunt and I had walked back into my stand in darkness, back then I didn't use a flashlight (no idea why). I was hunting about 30 yards in from a pasture in a huge old oak tree. As soon as I got settled in the stand I heard something breathing out in the pasture and it was walking very quickly to me. When I say breathing I mean a very loud panting almost grunting sound, however it didn't make much noise moving. I heard it jump the fence and it walked right under me all the while making this (at the time) terrifying serial killer panting grunt. It got about 15 yards on the other side of me and got down into a big ditch that I had to cross coming in from the other direction. As soon as it crossed my scent path the noise stopped completely and I never heard another peep out of it. It was like it completely vanished. I've always assumed it walked the ditch out, but I have never been able to figure out what it was or how it went from being so loud to complete silence on a dime. Never heard anything like that in my life before or since. At the time being a young kid who like scary movies I envisioned that it was an actual serial killer!

No pics but several years ago, hunting an area on public ground, I came upon about a 30' circle whereas someone(s) took some binder twine and kept going around and around to make an enclosure. Plus they had put life size plywood cutouts of people, several of them, up in the trees. Your guess is as good as mine.

Owl, I've wondered about that over the years. I live in Southern Illinois and have never seen a bear or even heard of a bear being seen around here in my lifetime. Anything is possible I suppose, guess it could've been a wayward black bear?? It certainly was an experience I'll never forget.

was not bowhunting but shot gunning crows along the shore of Lake Erie in the mid 1950 and found a body washed up on the shore. This kid had been sledding off the high ice piles along the shore during the winter and had fallen into the lake and drown. His body had drifted along with the long- shore currents and came to rest a mile away on a remote shore line.

Bow hunting in Kansas a few years back I find a bone sticking out of a 15 ft high eroded creek bank. It was a leg bone from human or other animal that had died in the area hundreds of years earlier. I dug it out, returned to Ft Collins and sent pictures to a forensic biologist and CSU. She later stated I was lucky it was not human but a young bison bone. Had it been a human bone, it would have had to be investigated.

Deerhunter- That was a pig of a Whitetail Buck for sure. I heard the same exact sound you are describing but during the daylight.. It freaked me out so much that I completely whiffed a 35 yard chipshot. Right over his back.

What I heard was such a loud and deep breathing sound that it almost sounded like a continued huff or something.. Turned around and a 5-6 year old whitetail was on the move.

SD BuckBuster- You described it perfectly, a loud deep breathing huffing sound. In my mind I always hoped it was a monster buck and you having witnessed it in the daylight confirms it for me. It sure sounded like a deer when it jumped the fence. Many times I have wished that I had had a strong flashlight with me that morning, although I may have been too shock up to see anything with it;)

Was hunting early bow season several years ago - thick woods - full canopy. I heard a “whoooosh” sound that I could not figure out from deeper in the woods - no roads for a couple of miles in that direction. A few minutes later I heard another “whooooosh” sound even closer. Again a little later an even louder “whoooosh” so close I think I should be able to see whatever is making this sound. I cannot see a thing - can’t hear anything walking in the dry leaves either. Suddenly “WHOOOOSH!” right over my head. I looked up to see a hot air balloon silently drifting just above treetop level! The sound I was hearing was the guy firing the burner!

About 1975 I found an abandoned campsite deep in the Sauk Co. woods in Wisconsin....two-man tent, cookstove, lantern, backpack, sleeping bags, food, cooking utensils, some clothing. It was still there two months later, looked like it had never been touched since I first found it. The camp stayed there and eventually deteriorated to become junk & trash in the woods. After a few years I & a buddy hauled it out for the farmer. It was on his land & he did not know who had camped there. We trashed it all.

Was shed hunting a few weeks back when I stumbled upon a black garbage bag that my buddy dared me to cut open. What we found inside was kinda creepy. 3 assorted birds that were all decapitated . A Rooster, Hen and a white Dove .Their blood was smeared all over a plate and a glass goblet that had leftover blood in it. We reported it the local authorities and they claimed it was the second such find in 2 days at different locations . Seemed like it was some kinda Santeria ritual . Spiritual to someone I guess, just plain creepy to me ....

I wasn’t hunting but working doing some bat (flying mammal) surveys in Missouri. We scout during the day to figure out where we will set our mist-nets at night. So it about an hour after sunset and we are sitting in the woods...completely dark, and checking our nets every 15 minutes or so. Its pretty quiet my buddy/coworker says “hey, you will never guess what I found scouting this area today.” Then he shows me the photo. I was like you had to wait until now to tell me? He said he rounded the bend in a creek and there it was. He was 30ft away and seen it from behind. He just knew it was a body. Pretty creepy. On my top 10 creepy finds in the woods. FYI- it was life-size and silicone too.

Keeping on the theme of "Weird New Jersey". There is a 10 acre property that borders the west side of my property. The owner bought it and built a spec house on it about 12 years ago. The house never sold but there's a for sale sign in front of it. I have full access to the property and there's a pretty big run that crosses the woods about 80 yards behind the house. I was up in a treestand one afternoon when a car pulls into the driveway. It parked out by the road, not by the house so I figured it was someone who spotted the sign and stopped in for a look.

A couple in their 30s got out and walked around the house, looked in the windows and checked out the deck. After a couple of minutes they walked back to the car and got in. Shortly, the passenger door opened back up and the girl got out and walked around the back of the house again. She looked around, pulled down her pants, leaned back against the house and proceeded to evacuate her bowels. My hunt was about over and I couldn't help myself so I yelled "HEY! DON"T SH!T THERE!"

She jumped up fast and started running/stumbling to her car while trying to pull her pants back up. She was wearing light colored pants and I'm positive she didn't finish what she set out to do before she ran back to the car. She jumped in the car and they took off. I got down, headed back to my house and told my wife what happened. I thought it was funny, she says I'm a terrible person.

This was back in the spring of 72, a friend and I were going down a wooden trail along a pasture in a park and there was a couple that were doing the dog and the moaning was load. My friend and I looked at each other and said WTH and we went down the trial another 20 yrds and there were a couple of black gents with a 16 mm camera filming the event from 25 yds away while drinking a bottle of Old Crow, the one black gent put his finger to his lips to be quiet and my friend looked at me and said WTF.

I told him I think somebody is going to get blackmail or a divorce papers on this one, and the moaning was keeping on, of course this was in California.

Was hunting in some pine row near town. I was aware a teenage girl had been missing. I came across what looked like a body wrapped in black plastic hanging in a tree. I cautiously approached expecting the worst. I touched the bag expecting to feel a body. Turned out to be a big bundle of pot plants. Local cop didn’t even seem interested.
