My daughter had hip surgery to have a torn labrum repaired and some bone shaved off a little over a week ago. She wanted to go hunting so without her mother’s consent we went! What a great hunt! She made a perfect shot on the boss Tom!
Hey guys long time reader first time poster. This was too special for me not to share I took my 2 1/2 year old daughter out with me last night and it all came together for us. I don't think either one of us will ever forget it.
Big Nebraska Tom. Called him back across the Platte river side channel after he'd already flown over to roost. Never thought that would happen but he couldn't resist the purrs. Bullhead did the rest at 10 yards.
Decided to head to Nebraska a few days before the P&Y Convention and do a little turkey hunting. Arrived Sunday afternoon in time to fill the first tag.

My third and final 2019 spring California bird has a crazy epic story to it I’ll share now. After Gia killed her second bird a flock of two longbeards and four hens showed themselves 200 yards away and worked away from our setup. The Big gobblers were locked on the hens and in strut mode. With one hour of shoot time left, I decided to go indian sneak mode and see if I could stalk into the flock. My preferred way is to call birds in close to the decoys with no blind but a spot stalk with the bow in big open country can be a second best choice that is super challenging and fun when it works out. After 20 minutes of slowly crawling through the grass both on my stomach and then sliding in the last 30 yards on my back, I found myself only 25 yards from the two strutting toms. I had one small hump on the hill and grass giving me cover to inch closer. Looking down below the flock I saw brown movement but didn’t pay much attention to it. I thought maybe a deer. In one motion I slowly sat up and came to full draw with both toms strutting away from me. My movement was concealed by their fans and I was able to take a patient well placed shot. The arrow flew true and the big Gobbler only went 5 yards before laying down to expire. Without notice a coyote came out of the brush and tackled my turkey. The gobbler fought back with its last bit of life and it was an explosion of feathers. The coyote then sprinted down hill with my gobbler in its mouth and I gave chase. I then barked at the yote which caused him to drop my bird and run off. Due to the yote attack, my birds back and tail feathers got a little messed up you could say.. ok a lot ha! Gia and joe walked over from their perch down the ridge to laugh about what just happened. Gia found most of the ripped out tail feathers for me and my pictures :-)
Beav, congratulations to your daughter! How awesome is that! Nick, well done getting that young lady introduced to God’s Great Outdoors! Chris, killer pics and story!
3rd and final Nebraska tom. Moved about an hour west of my original spot and connected on this white tipped longbeard. Got out of there just before the blizzard hit. Made it to Omaha safely.
Some great hunts and birds folks, congrats to you all!
Here's the video of my hunt from Tuesday, if you've got a few minutes to burn(click on settings and switch to HD...it's worth it).
I had been watching two toms and around 10 jakes strutting, gobbling, and following a few hens behind me. Had heard one gobble to my left about 15min earlier but I honestly thought one of the jakes had circled, it never answered my call, and I hadn't heard anything on the roost from that direction.
All of a sudden I look up and there's a tom in the deke's? I start screwing with the cameras and getting set to draw, all of a sudden two more tom's come in from the left and push the first away. I could tell they weren't going to stick around long, so I decided to shoot as the bigger of the two turned to leave. The bird didn't die in the field, but after 10min I walked over to the edge across from me and he was laying there with his buddy standing over him...I got lucky.
Thanks he was pumped- 3 of them came in strutting and he took some feathers off him with the first shot and they can back in after the Jake decoy and at 10 yds he put an old rage right under his eyeball- bad medicine!!
Mason with his second. First bow kill. Thanks goes out to HUNT for putting this together for my boys. The crazy kid photo bombing in the background is their other younger brother. He gets to start hunting next year. God help us all! :)
Absolutely t-roy. Although the day after Trkyslr left I had 10 birds in my front yard. Coincidence or some kind of turkey whispering voodoo? No one knows! :-)
First day in Iowa with T-roy... what a spring this has been for me! This was another big eastern with a heavy 24# weight, big beard and 3 year old spurs. I love bowhunting turkeys!
Took my dad out this evening and he connected on a double! At 83 years old he couldn’t care less that they were jakes and neither could I! Great memories and we topped the day off with a whiskey!
Well, you guys are killing me. But, I can not push it right now. Had a double hernia surgery on the 17th. Pa. season starts on the 27th. Hoping to be out on the 29th.
Thanks guys! It was a great morning. They were gobbling like crazy! We had several birds hang up on us just out of range and snub our decoys. This was the fifth called in by 7am! It was pretty Epic.
Finally got out in the woods for the first time this season. It has been a busy spring, but the time away from everything was exactly what I needed. I guess it also helped that the turkeys cooperated!
Okay, since Will posted up a pic as ugly as mine, I'll play. ;-)
4 jakes were pounding the crap out of my DSD. Wish I would have bought 2 tags. He ALMOST made it across the creek! :-\ Wet birds don't make pretty pics.
Well, on Tuesday I filled my Pa. tag. I do have a picture on my phone. I also sent it to medicineman. He has been hunting in Ohio. I set the deks out and started to call lightly. Was not watching, when I looked back at the deks, there was a yote standing about 15 yrds. from me looking at the deks. Did not shot, but scared the hell out of him. About 5 minutes later, the bird gobbled twice. I gave a hard yelp and he came unglued. The bird would gobble 2-3 times then he would gobble 4-6 times in a row. He did this about a dozen times. By now he was in the field and saw the deks. He came to about 35 yrds. then he went into full strut the rest of the way. Took him at 15 yrds. (gun) Around 21 lbs. official measure 8.5" beard and 1 inch spurs. Now for Ohio.
Finally got some spare time and called Beav. We haven’t got to turkey hunt together for a few years. Had some turkeys hanging out around my place and after 2 hours, Beav was able to sweet talk this nice Tom away from his ladies and I made a good shot at 8 yards as he pounded the decoy. He only went 5 yards after the shot. Had a little over inch spurs and a 10 inch beard. Beav got it all on video too, which was pretty cool.
Congratulations Reflex and everyone, some really nice birds. Love seeing all the kids getting involved. My buddy killed a nice 4 bearded Tom last week.

Getting late in the game in Montana but called this guy into 6 yards, he died in about 8 seconds. I adopted the decoy from HUNTMAN a couple years back:)
Getting late in the year but we’re still sending it! Met a nice fellow archer in the parking lot at a local public land spot and invited him to hunt with me as he didn’t have a blind and had never killed a turkey. He’s killed a turkey now :-)
First hunt with my daughter - called in a flock right off the roost and was able to get this gobbler. Took all of 10 min once we got set up. I call her my good luck charm!
First bow kill for 13 year old Landon Ward. One of 12 tags for Goulds turkey in the AZ. unit. 18 yard shot. His bow was set at 33 #'s shooting the NEW Vortex 100 grain ALL STEEL 2 inch cut. Steven, Landon and Myself were hunting at 8500 feet for three days and then heard one gobble down below the mountain at about 6000 feet . They got set-up and Steven called him in.
My 9 year old anchored her first bird with a 410. She prefers the stopping power of a 3 inch shell despite the added recoil over the 2 1/2 inch. She said," Dad, is this an old bird?" I said, "It sure is. Just look at how it wore its beard down to about 2 inches."
