Its getting down to the wire and im super excited. I head to Manitoba in 3 weeks for my blackie hunt. Im using an osage self bow, river cane arrows and stone points. Itll hopefully be my first bear using primitive gear.

my last bear in 2008 was shot at 7 yards over bait, I was on a stool with my primitive bow, 45 lbs at 28,,, I draw at 27 bear razor head,,, bear went 30 steps go have a good time....

Ive been shooting quite a lot in preparation. Trying to break myself of shooting tight behind the shoulder (as you would for deer). Since i am using primitive gear any of my shots will be within 20 yards. Ill be using an ASAT vanish suit (my favorite).

i practice with field points that i sand down to match weights. Also, if im shooting into hay bales it does not damage them. The obsidian is a but more fragile than the flint or dacite points.

Most people have no idea how effective primitive archery equipment is! Unfortunately, stone points aren’t legal in my home state, even though the have a longer history of effectiveness than any other method by many thousands of years.

it varies depending on the material being knapped but about 1-2 hours from start to finish. I also do a lot of trading so end up with a variety. The limb tips are Elk Antler. This bow was actually built by Ryan Gill. He is a better bowyer than i am so i sold a couple of mine and had this one built for me by him. It shoots an 800 grain arrow at just over 180 fps which is pretty fast for a non laminated bow. He puts a heavy reflex on the limbs which i havent mastered yet.

Looks like a super hunt. I am scheduled for the same hunt towards the end of the month- hope to learn you were successful. I was going to say I hope you get the second biggest bear in the area, but would be pleased to have you get the biggest. You are setting the bar high.

most places require at least a 7/8" width and 1" length. the ones that dont have that requirement typically do not allow them at all at which point i use a trade point.
