Great Gear That's Been Discontinued
General Topic
Contributors to this thread:
The Magnus Rack Pack thread got me thinking.....what other awesome pieces of gear are no longer available? Pieces of equipment that were awesome, but went the way of the Dodo. When this happens I always wonder why popular products disappear?
From the other thread these items were mentioned:
• Rack Pack
• Mel Dutton Decoys • Badlands Terra Glide
What else can you think of?
I am sure there is lots of stuff but I just thought of another...
Easton ACC shafts
Muzzy Zero Effect drop away rests, and Keller pendulum sights....ahhh….the good ol' days!
Badlands Terra Glide was replaced by Legend 40/44.
First lite in ASAT
-Mitch
1) Cabela's lightweight Brush Buster hip waders.
2) 2419 Easton Aluminum arrows.
And to include a generalization: more things made of metal, less things made of plastic!
Not all change is for the better. "New and improved" is not always the case.
how about the tree lounge
Sitka 90% pants
Mossyoak made a green spring camo years ago that was absolutely PERFECT for spring turkeys. Don't know why they ever got rid of it
Hmmm...I have a Mel Dutton antelope decoy. Looks brand new, used one hunt...decoy worked, I didn’t! Right over his back! But that was before electronic range finders.
Magnus I & II glue on broadheads X2 Carlton Cooler
Leupold vx1/2 rifle scopes 300cc Honda foretrax
Manual trannys in half ton pickups (I consider my ride hunting gear)
Loggy Bayou treestands
Rocky Mountain broadheads
ASAT First Lite gear
Nothing else really comes to mind gearwise. We have it amazingly good these days. The cotton clothes and boots I started out in just in the late 90's-00's is absolute garbage compared to what is on the market today.
Hell can you even get a manual in a 3/4 or 1 ton anymore?
Acorn Cruncher Deer View Mirror
Ram makes a 6 speed 2500/3500. It's the only full sized left I believe.
Browning primaloft puffy. Lightest, most packable puffy on the market.
Still Steamin' Buck Semen
Rough,
If pissin’ In a scrape works.....well, just sayin’....
Good products not gimmicks. Its pretty obvious why the cruncher is no longer available.
T5 for sure. Put bandaids on mine til it fell apart
Gene Wensel once asked cowboy Phil Phillips if he could borrow a "cough silencer" and ole Phil just glared at him:)
All hunting clothes have been discontinued. They are all 'gear' now.
Spring bear tags in many places have been discontinued
Puckets blood trailers ...
Bowbender, Any idea how many scrapes you could freshen in a day? lol
Leupold VX1/2 scopes Double bull T5
The first camo pattern Sitka ever used was a good one for trees. Better than the science of nothing imo
Bears feet slip over stalking booties.
Solid limb bows over 35" ata. Very few left.
AP,
Three maybe four..... Freshening them up ain't the problem....it's the damn nap in between that would kill me.... hehehehehe
Gore socks are coming back...agree best ever.
Acc' s prohunters where and still are the best Easton shaft made. I have about 8 dozen raw 390s.
Cabelas saddle cloth— do they still make it or something similar. Liked that burs wouldn’t stuck and it was water repellent for a while.
Hawk,
I really like saddle cloth. I have a set, bibs and jacket in the original Advantage camo. Still looks new.... wear a couple of times a year.
First thing I bought out of college when I got a job. Still have a jacket but the pants... have shrunk over the years. Have some bibs that were way too big when I bought them on clearance and they’re not too bad now.
Just a few years ago I bought a pair of Lacrosse Adamas all leather lace up boots.
They are a great hunting boot but are no longer made.
Finger friendly compounds, arrow shafts that came 34” long. 2514’s .Adams arrow holster.
You guys beat me to the T5.....still can't believe it's gone:(
Winona Camo, hard to beat for north woods whitetail.
Mossy Oak Fall foliage pants
I liked Cabelas Seclusion 3D camo.
Shooting glove with the nose picker attachment. You could pick your nose without taking the glove off. Don't know who made it, but I lost mine and can't find another.
Lowa Baltrusal boots.
I'd give anything to personally ask Johnny Morris why you pay $4.5 billion for a company and then get rid of the lines that made Cabela's a fortune?
Microtex. Not sure if its totally discontinued but they are my favorite bowhunting pants. Trying to make the pairs I have last.
I loved the original DB blinds as well, but can't say the new offerings are any worse.
I also loved the Rangesnap system but like the new setup using a bungee tether and a kuiu pouch on the side of the bino harness much better.
Youth costs on hunting licenses, I DO miss that!
Autumn orange is definitely what I miss the most. Would be the Dutton antelope decoy as well, but I’m lucky enough to have one.
There is mention of the Badlands Terra Glide.
I am on a waiting list for the manufacturing to restart mid-2019 (so the manufacturer told the distributor I have an order with).
I need one, anybody have one they would like to sell?
"Surprised no one mentioned rocket bh’s"
Shot Rocket Sidewiders for years, till quality went south around 2009 or so. Now it's Slick Trick standards or ViperTricks.
Rocky mountain revolution broadhead. Killed a ton of deer with that head.
how about the old willys jeep
Beige brush buttons for a recurve. Hunting vehicles with out all the electronics and tire chains fit.
Thunderhead Broadheads, it’s getting tougher to find them.
Drury Dead Silence turkey call (dog whistle)... hook, line and sinker for me. Cabelas clothes before BP bought them.
The T-Split Bow!
The T-Split Bow!
I had a Loggy Bayou climbing treestand about 20 years ago that I loved. Some didn't because of the noisy band but the seat folded up so it was completely flat for carrying. Light weight but you had to hug the tree or use a strap to climb with. I still see some on ebay but mine was stolen out of the tree. Killer was I only own 3.5 acres and it was on my property just out of sight from my house.
Call me weird but I miss those little canisters that Kodak film came in. They were probably 2-1/2" long and about 1" diameter. They were absolutely waterproof, cheap, and durable. They were the only good thing about photo film versus going digital.
I still look for gear at Cabela’s, but I would like to have the “old “ Cabelas back the way it used to be.
Vanilla Killa and all those Dan Fitzgerald vhs tapes in which he used it.
"Surprised no one mentioned rocket bh’s"
Agree! I think the Steelhead 125 was maybe the best mechanical ever.
Another item I used (and still use) is a Vantage Point Trailhawk treestand. Screw in a heavy duty pin and hang the stand. Allowed me to hunt on any size tree really. Shot a lot of deer out of that stand.
I've seen both of these listed already. Loggy Bayou Treestands & Cabelas' Saddle cloth, I still have some of these pants and a coat. Best clothing I ever hunted in.
Old Cabala's hunting clothes...the new stuff is horrible. Leupold VX 2,
Most of the Cabela’s Meindl boot line. I as well would like to have the old Cabela’s back, just not the same...
Surfbow's Link
"how about the old willys jeep"
Not quite dead yet!
I used my antique Loggy climber this year. I still have a brand new spare seat for it, but my butt must smell so bad that the squirrels haven't ate the old one yet!
Cabelas original Outfitter camo love this stuff blends well with everything
TBM's tracking spiders
HDYLMN?
I really like Bear River Treestands too.
Single pole stand works on small crooked trees
Single pole stand works on small crooked trees
Clothing: Cabela's Microtex in Predator Camo! (good fit and great temperature range) Boots: Sawtooth 800 gram in EE w/air bob sole, Meindl Mt. Hiker 2 in wide widths Bison Gear Wool Packs: in Pendleton Outfitter, Predator, or ASAT Camo. Bighorn Bows: Trad Takedowns and one-piece Winchester Supreme 160 grain Fail Safe loads for my .280 Rem. (good elk medicine) Winchester: Pre 64 M-70 Featherweight Ambusher Single pole ladder stands
Saw rocky mountain revolution and almost fell over. Loved that head for deer. As well as the g5 Tekan. Also have had a cabelas micro fleece turtleneck with windshear and it is one of if not the most used piece of hunting clothing I have. I agree miss the old cabelas as well. Solid gear at a solid price.
The two-part skunk essence cover scent. May have been placebo affect but worked for me. Assume too many pranks so they had to stop making it.
Also, Deerguard, the latex-based denatonium benzoate formula. Absolutely the BEST, but no longer available.
Windwalker Treestands by LEM Cabela's six pocket microtex pants.
SKY Archery Skyhawk TD Recurves
Autumn Orange xx75's
Bear Razor Heads
Cabela's Outfitter series boots.
Pretty much anything from the Screaming Eagle catalog.
LLBean Hydro Wear
And I love my Cabelas Microtex. I swear I saw it still being sold in the WVa store. Was I mistaken?
It’s funny reading thru these posts, I’ll bet I have 2/3 of the things listed either in my basement or barn gathering dust.
"The first camo pattern Sitka ever used" ASAT?
I still have some old Sitka (I think they were the original "mountain" pants and shirt) in ASAT. The pants are still good, but look like a ghillie suit from all the thread loops...
First Lite dropping ASAT x2.....
Rocky Mountain Snyper Broadheads
Realtree's Advantage camo pattern
"And I love my Cabelas Microtex. I swear I saw it still being sold in the WVa store. Was I mistaken?"
I see a few offerings still listed but it looks like maybe selling out existing inventory.
Microtex and some older Winona Camo Patterns
Studebaker String tracker
The original HS Strut TruTalker grunt calls. They changed it and ruined it. I have an old one that's killed a pile of deer. I wanted a backup, bought the new style and threw it out shortly after. I hear they are coming out with an original style but the reeds still different.
There was an whitetail grunt call years ago called the "Twin Tube"...I don't recall the manufacturer. It looked similar like a shorter elk bugle, and was pure whitetail poison!
I had one for many years, and killed every buck with it for that duration. Wish I could still get one!
My belief has always been that if you find an item that really works well and that you use a lot, buy TWO of them (at least), because the more you value it the better the odds are it'll be discontinued.
Which reminds me........I'd better stock up on Thermacells and the pads that they use!!!!!
Hoyts Alphamax 35. And the previous generation of Sitka Ascent pants. Also LL Bean Cresta Hunter boot.
screaming Eagle tree stands with hanging brackets.
Fall Guy retractable safety strap. The box similar to a seat belt that you can pull down with a cord, hook to your harness and climb up and down without ever being unhooked. The one I have I cherish!
Muzzy 145 grain and Muzzy Turkey Thumper heads
Remington Model 7 XCR....what a little beauty. Made it in 2009 only.
Remington Model 7 XCR....what a little beauty. Made it in 2009 only.
"screaming Eagle tree stands with hanging brackets" You can still buy SE stands, but Im not sure about the bracket style.
The original tree saddle. Bought a few when trophyline closed shop
You can see thru my Microtex pants and they are still better than anything Cabelas is presently selling.
I just picked up a set of Cabela’s microtex pants and shirt and some day one wool pants for $70! Haven’t even tried them on yet I really just wanted the day one pants but maybe I really got something nice in the microtex?
I really miss the old school green wool Morris Feel gloves.
There sure are a lot of us on this thread mentioning how much we like Microtex. Are you listening Cabelas? You have a winner with that product...why discontinue it? Maybe Microtex is TOO GOOD and doesn't wear out soon enough?
I’ve got two pairs of Microtex pants I’d get rid of. 36x30
Knight and Hale Lonesome Hen call. Still have mine with original spring .Still works great.
I also miss the microtec clothes, and the vantage point tree stand. Wished vpa would make a 1.5 in Broadhead that weighted 200 or less. So miss the original Snuffers. Also miss the original muzzy 4 blade in 125 gr. Some say they are junk but I always had great results with them!
Brooktrout reminded me of one I miss the knight and hale bachelorette.
Lock-On Limit treestands, Badlands 2800 pack, Cabelas Microtex clothes and Cabelas Wooltimate outfitter camo. Long axel compound bows for finger shooters.
Loc-on treestands. I still find one for sale every now and then.
I had no idea Microtex was discontinued. I've one pair of pants that are the beat fitting pants I've ever had (skinny, no ass) but another that are the same size but the crotch feels like it's down to my knees.
another vote for treebark and mossy oak fall foliage! loved that camo.
I grabbed a Wooltimate vest and coat on closeout. I can sit a treestand or a long coyote stand in the lowest temps we get and still enjoy it.
You guys that liked the saddle cloth must have never hunted in cold weather! lol Noisy as cellophane when the temps dropped.
Mid,
I use(d) my saddle-cloth in temps down to the mid 20's. Never understood what the noise issue was.
"Shaft Spiders" sounds like an STD. Kept reading I saw screaming eagle and figured I just need to stop.
Can you guys tell me what brand of jacket Steve is wearing in these 2 videos? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbzyDmkOxws
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRm5Qog0b7w
How about Trophy Taker discontinuing the Terminal T-Lock? It has been a very effective and durable broadhead for me. Kevin
Rocky mountain 2 blade mechanicals, best mech to date!
Bear Razor heads. Loved the 100 grain ones when I was a speed freak and shot them through my Hoyt with a 2 inch overdraw. Those were the days!
The old steel frame Browning A-5 shotgun.
I shot my first deer as a kid with one of those! Belgian Browning!
In the mid eighties I would grab one of my dads Baker treestands and get after it. No safety harnesses....damn lucky I’m alive....but never thought twice about it then.
