We will be using this stand this Spring. Used green treated lumber to blend into the forest. Lots of room in the stand for getting an arrow off. Baited the site same day as we built the stand. It will be an 18YRD bow shot. Site is ATV access only.
Bait will be called Edison Lake Bait.

I like the looks of that barrel, I'm sick of looking at ugly blue drums!
I’m tired of looking at them too would like to find something different to use.
Lucky Seven Bear Baits sends bait in those barrels. Got a bunch of them.
I always look forward to your Spring thread Chris. Great pics! Do you take them with an iPhone or with a regular camera?
Thanks Greg, Alex and Ibow… Pic are taken by camera. I only have a flip phone
Don’t kill ALL the big ones this year, Chris! We’ll be up there in June of 2020!
Good luck to all of your hunters!
We have 9 HUGE bear management area. Much of it sits unhunted. Your going to have a great hunt in 2020 Troy. I figured out just a couple of days ago that it was you, "t-roy", that booked back in January. Thanks Troy for picking us for your Bear Hunt!!
Leaving in about 10 days to hunt there.
Chris, I've been looking forward to seeing your posts this spring. Gets a guy pumped for our hunt next year. Glad to see Joe is still at it, he's a good guy. I also like the stand you built, it looks like the one I sat in last spring. I think the home made ones have a little more room, can make the longer sit a little easier with the added comfort (IMO). Good luck!

Made 3 trips to Lucky Seven in Cambridge MN lately. Also a semi truck load being delivered to Dryden at 1:00 today. Tons of bait to keep the barrels full.
***Besides all that we get from Lucky Seven, we go through about 5 tons of dairy ration in a Spring season!!
Patrick, Joe is a great asset to Pine Acres. One day, he said he wants to take over the camp and continue the bear hunt. He might have to wait awhile!!LOL. The cabin in the pic in this thread is the one you stayed in last year.
Steve, we have many baits out right now. Snows been gone except in the bottoms. Looking forward to your arrival.

Joe and I have a Bear hunt Planned in Belog, Western North Carolina for mid October with a bunch of bear hunting buddies. Gonna run them with hounds.
Oh I don't know about the wait Joe, Chris is pretty old. When I first started coming up there we called him Dad, he is much older than I am! Couple years and your in. By the way cabin 2 looks great stayed there in 83 with my Dad and brother.
Brian,he said if I don't move over there's going to be a "Hostile Takeover"...
Come on now Brian your only old when you admit it. I was just camping with my dad out in our woods in December and he’s 70! Although I did mention that takeover.
Good luck to your hunters this spring! Looking forward to your trail cam pictures! I need to figure out a time to get back up there to get a bear. How far are you booked out now Chris? Into 2020 I'm guessing?
Sent you a message Brandon!! Chris.
OMNRF has just decided to propose a change to the distance a bait can be off the roadway. Was 200 metres now proposed 30 metres!! Welcome news.
Hello Chris Did the MNR wake up in the morning and make decisions ?
They are proposing...got the info this afternoon. Have a great season Skull. There's an Enviromental Bill of Right or EBR notice, where you can post your comment Skull. Address is ero.ontario.ca/notice/019-0022. Have until June 17th to post your concerns.
Sorry Chris the link didn’t work for me
ero.ontario.ca/notice/019-0022 worked for me Pasquale.
Spike, What is ‘dairy ration’ that you use for bait?
Good luck to you and all your hunters this year Chris. Can’t wait to make it back up there.
Its rolled oats and corn steamed and rolled with molasses. Just like sweet feed used for horses. Also use this on our deer sites.
WE take the ration and mix in Donut filling.... then add trail mix and all kinds of other candies. All mixed by hand. Cement mixer gets all gummed up. Very hands on mixing!!
***We have cameras out but will not be checking them for about a week. Will rebait but leave cameras alone.
Thanks Dave!!
How would you know if a mixer gums up? You have to try it first! ;-)
Go away Brian!! LOL (joking)
Just for everyone else's understanding this has been an ongoing joke between Chris and I for about 25 years. Joe you should try the mixer idea !
Will be up last week of May. Second year in a row. Can’t wait to see some pics
Screwball your more than welcome to come for a visit and mix some baits to prove your theory! We need lots!
Sheets, got the outboards all tuned up for ya!! Will have the boats on Eagle River for sure and Indian Lake.
Can rent a Boat and Motor by the day!! Boats are cached at the landings, just bring a camp outboard 9.9 motor with you.

Each year we set up sites in new, unhunted areas. This Spring will have many such baits to hunt.
Each year we will take a select few previously hunted sites cut new shooting lanes and build new treestands. This will help the previously hunted bears feel less weary of hunters.
Although we now use barrels. We will keep the "NEW" sites as natural as possible. Permanent treestands are now roomier. They are set in surrounding cover. Not out in the open. We use ladder stands no lock ons.
Pretty well all our sites are baited now. Camera's out watching over the baits. Pics will be posted next weekend.
***back when we first started outfitting bear hunters in the mid 70's and into the 80's, about 95% of our hunters were rifle hunters. Now we have about 85% Bow hunters. Pretty well all our sites are no more than 23 yards, average is 17 yards. With some shots set to be about 12 to 15 yards for the long bow hunters.

***Its a Provincial offense with a fine of up to $25,000.00 if you accidently take a lactating sow. So I find it very important to focus on sex as much as size. In the process, we get great pics of shooter bears while sexing our bears.

Wow, $25k if you accidentally shoot a sow? Thats steep. Have you ever seen this enforced?
Never known anybody to shoot a "lactating" female (Sow with cubs of the year during Spring). I am pretty sure they will enforce.

Chris, Any pics from the Stewart Lake bait? I think that's the stand you had me on last year..... just curious.
Found this moose near one of our more remote baits.
Patrick, I did have a camera on the site but for some reason it didn't take pics. I pulled it and will put a new one. Stewart Lake Bait is very active right now.
I figured it would be pretty active, for how many bears I saw last year. Considering it was my first time bear hunting and averaged seeing probably 5 bears a night, I thought that was pretty good....no shortage of action for me.

Heavy rains and wind settled in for 4 days. I hope we have a few calm periods to get the bears in front of the hunters.
How has been going for this weeks hunters so far Chris. As far a weather goes what do you think is the best weather pattern to be in to get the bears hitting the baits consistently.
Hunters have been watching bears. The hunter who bladed a bear on Sunday said he will still hunt the same bait site that he wounded the bear on. Would only shoot the bear he hit on Sunday. Today a bear came in as tall as the barrel on all fours and he passed as the bear did not show a wound.
Have another to track in the morning. A pass through, sounds good. Found some blood, but chose to track in the morning... Wish us luck!!
Bears move in rain but not strong winds. Today the weather was the opposite of what the weather guy said it would be. Turned out nice, high of 70F. Baits are doing great!!

Many of our Bear hunters are first time Bear hunters. We have a sit down, go over pics and then use logs and barrels for judging at the sites. Many of our hunters are happy with average bears....saves the big guys for the hunters who have been hunting bears for years.
*** ONTARIO has the second LARGEST Bear population in Canada. Closed Spring bear hunt since 1998 has dramatically increased the already high numbers of Big Bears roaming Pine Acres 9 LARGE bear management areas.
Sows with cubs visit 1 out of 3 sites Pine Acres bait. Most Sows this Spring have 3 cubs tagging along behind her. Ontario has an ABUNDANCE of Natural food sources to keep the sows healthy enough to rear her cubs.
We at Pine Acres take many Pope and Young contenders each season by our seasoned hunters. This week we have harvested just that...LARGE bears along with the lessor bears.
Again, the Pope And Young Certificate, is the only way to identify an actual P&Y bear. Skulls can shrink dramatically during the drying period.
We are having an awesome week, with a few more to tag out. We have FRESH baits for the following 2 weeks. I am looking forward to a VERY successful finnish to the season. Chris Lavoie...

Cell phones are very unreliable in this area. Most times we only hear half the messages. The internet is also very sporadic. So do not rely on cell phones to communicate back to us.
Also, being a semi guided hunt, we set up your bait sites, get them active and show you your site. We give you bait each day and answer your questions. Your success depends on you taking our info and working with it. Also, when on a semi guided hunt, every once in a while a group has to retrieve their own bear if they cant get a hold of us. *** Much of our hunters success depends on the hunters themselves.
This is a 5 year pilot Spring Bear Hunt program. We promote the shooting of boar bears. As I have stated earlier on this thread, it is a $25,000. max fine for taking a Lactating sow.
Many sites have sows with cubs. These same sites have larger boars. We explain what to look for in sows that can be a lactating sow. Wait 7 minutes or there abouts and if no cubs show up with the bear in front of you then take the bear if its the one you want.
This is "NOT" a guided hunt, its semi guided.
***As stated many times before on my previous threads, Semi Guided is not for everyone.
***Reason for reposting these pics is because this bait, Beaver hut #2 bait, was hunted last week. The hunter unfortunately went home without a bear. On Thursday I moved him to a different site to no avail. We try our best, as does the hunter, but sometimes it does not go the way we want it to go. Unfortunately that's hunting. I guarantee, we will do our utmost to get you a bear!! To be, as this unsuccessfull hunters buddies said, " Soured because he did not get a bear", is a little ridiculous!! Both of the others in his group tagged bears.
Last week stats are as follows: Main Camp, 16 hunters... took 13 bears. Outpost hunters all saw bears, 2 left without tagging.
In a society that lives for instant feed back and success not succeeding is a hard pill for some to swallow. Not everyone gets a participation ribbon or trophy in life. Some people need to accept life is not always fair and need to blame someone else for failure.
Chris, you’re an outstanding outfitter. If you hadn’t thought there would be a chance for a nice boar at Beaver Hut #2, you wouldn’t have put your hunter there. No worries. I think most who are experienced bear hunters totally understand. Best wishes for your continued success this season! You’re booked full for a reason - you’re a great outfitter!
As Joe and I did last 2 weekends, we waited out in the farthest BMA's for the hunters to end the hunt for the night. We do this to make sure they know the way back to camp.
I was able to take this pic of the end of legal shooting. Cabin Lake!!
Thanks Brian and Chuck!!
After reading Bryan's review I have a few comments. Bowsite will not take my comments, response, on my review, might be me not knowing how to respond. So here it is!! On Thursday I moved him to our West Bear area hoping to better his chances. On Friday I said check all the sites he knew of and see what you could come up with. We were in camp till 2:00 PM and never once did he come over and talk while we were mixing bait.
A couple of times his group of three sat alone with me in the lodge and talked how to better their success. He listened intently. I decided to move the one hunter in the group that had not seen to a new site. The new site produced instantly.
I thought the pics on the cams ( Bryans) told us he should give his original bait another try. My plan did not work unfortunately.
*** also, his boar bear was visiting his site at daybreak. I sat down and showed him the pics. There were many pics of his bait during daylight (Morning). He did not hunt mornings so unfortunately his chances at bagging the big guy was diminished big time.
I did spend time with him. I was his guide not Joe. I never knew there was an issue till the eve they of their departure. His buddies said he was "SOUR" as they handed me and Joe a couple of hundred dollars tip!!!
Thanks for hunting with us Bryan sorry for you not being successful. Chris Lavoie.
Just my 2 cents. I was in camp last week with 3 other guys. Our group only took 1 bear. I seen 3 bears just not what I was looking for. One guy saw a couple bears and one guy didn’t see a bear. Chris and Joe go above and beyond what a semi-guided hunt is. Even took me to a stand that was accessible by atv one evening. Moved all 3 of us last night. Chris has recent pics of nice boats at all of our bait sites. This was our second hunt with Chris and we rebooked next year as well. Great Camp with great guys running it.
Chris don’t worry about it, For some people is never good enough, Is hunting not killing, You are a good Outfitters,
Chris, I haven’t checked any reviews but after following your threads for several years and talking with you at the Grand Rapids show a couple of times, don’t worry about it. You’ve got a good thing going with tons and tons of happy clients. You’re the real deal. Along with you & Skull, Ontario’s BEST!
Some really nice bears harvested Chris congrats on a great season
First let me say Chris does not need to be defended so I won't. I have been on many guided hunts and have hunted with Pine Acres since 1983. In the time with my brother and family we have seen most of it and then some, and Chris has seen way more. From hunters leaving baits to go to the strip club, filming hunts, afraid to stay in or go to their stand. Shooting bears and leaving them in the woods. Shooting bears in the jaws, guts, butts, etc. Leaving their bait to have sex with their wife in the truck, (LOL that was funny), going fishing and leaving baits, can't sit still, wearing DEET and I mean by the bottle. Oh I forgot Chris, I'll give you an extra hundred you get me a big bear, and Chris says no everyone gets the same chance, that is what you hired and paid me for already. Oh I forgot the guy that was going to kick Chris's ###, sue him, etc. It is always the guides fault, never the hunter. I can go on, to many pea poor hunters to write about on here. My friend you know the truth don't worry about the those not worth worrying about.
Got some bears down...thanks guys.
Congrats on a nice season - great bears. How many hunters do you average per week?
2019: First week, 3 hunters. 2nd week 5. 3rd 16 and 5th 14 and 6th 14. The omnrf gives us tags according to our Bear Management Area size. Beings we are semi guided, hunters do much of the work when they arrive. Baits are very active when hunters arrive, up to hunter to maintain their site after arrival. We discuss constantly in lodge and at mixing room what each hunters days plan of attack is. Stand by sites are ready to go. We move hunters to new sites according to what a hunter tells us.
Yesterday we did a guided excursion for a father and son. Even though they were on a semi guided hunt. Both saw bears. Father missed completely, son saw nice one but did not shoot. Today they go to different baits, their original baits we showed them when they arrived.
We ALWAYS work on the following weeks hunters baits while hunters are on stand.
Hey Chris sent you an email. I know ur busy, but want to make sure you got it.
This bear was seen last week on a stand by a bowhunter. Sunday, a new bowhunter passed it. Yesterday she saw a huge black. Now she will take either bear when and if they come back in.
Sheets I check it out. Haven't been on emails for a few days.
I've hunted with Chris and Joe twice. I had success on one hunt. I think people think because you are hunting over bait you will automatically have sucess. The first day of this years hunt the shooter came in, but I believe he saw me move and that was it. So I can only blame myself.
I saw bears everytime I went out this year. I think a person needs to hunt morning and night ( I learned this from Chris and Joe) to up your chances at the big one. I hunt deer on my property and I hunt quite often. This year I was not sucessefull but I had some great experiences in the woods. The same goes when I bear hunt in Canada, you never know what you might see. We have to remember its called hunting and not killing.
Looking forward to next year.
So, we killed a huge bear this aft. Stuckintherut (bowsites handle) bow killed the monster bear on stuckintherut bait with his daughter sitting beside him.
Stuckintheruts wife hit the cinnamon bear in the above pic. Will get it tomorrow I hope!!
One of the longbow hunters filled his tag also tonight.
Another hunter tagged a bear yesterday early aft. at Mutrie Rock Bait. Him and his wife tracked it, gutted it and skinned it where it laid. Never once asked for help. They are leaving tomorrow after leaving a deposit for 2020 spring.
Took a bear yesterday on Cobble Bait. Nice one. 2 bears have been shot at but missed completely with rifle.
Pics tomorrow after tracking the cinnamon bear.
Thanks Dink.

Congratulations Chris on your season looks like you are killing a lot of nice bears this year I like the new pose on the log it shows the Bear off really well. We got Logan's age back on his Bear from Ontario Natural Resources and they ages it at 7 years old. We are still waiting on the Taxidermist to finish his rug and the skull so we can get it scored I will let you know what it scores . Keep up the great work hoping to come back up in 2021 when Logan finishes school.
Thanks Mark...

Looking forward to next spring near with Chris and Joe. These two are bear whisperers! You guys run a great outfit. Always see bears and enjoy the time learning from the tips you both provide. As long as there is a spring season I’ll be there!

A great father/son hunt!!
Hunted last week with Chris and Joe. They are the Pine Acres Dynamic Duo!! The semi guided hunt was exactly what my son and I were expecting. Helping out with bait and helping to retrieve bears at night!! What a blast. We will be back for sure! I am so happy to see Morgan with her first bear! Congrats Morgan!!

Mandatory Bear Survey!! ONTARIO...
Mandatory Bear Survey!! ONTARIO...
Ignore this!!! OMNRF office just informed me that they will just use the info off the report hunters gave at the end of their hunt. Form #33's. They are confused!!
She said a resident bear hunter should still do the mandatory reporting.
What a year. Wow Chris. Post the final bears in the woods there thread when you get a chance.
Awesome thread Chris... really enjoyed following along. Thanks for taking the time to post. Congrats to you & all your hunters.
Thanks Grant and Chuck... Grant, congrats on the bear's you and son took with TSI, Dave knows how to get bears.... I was going to post rest of pics on success thread after I launch my new "Fall" thread in a week or so. We have a busy Fall Bear and Wolf season coming up fast. Baiting starts in less than 3 weeks. Joe and I took a day off to visit Cabela's in Winnipeg and visit the Taxidermist. Right now catching up on LOTS of camp work.
Chris, that reporting system isn't working, I've tried several times by phone and it always tells me I have nothing to report, I just tried on line and it tells me the same thing.
Thanks for question Randy. I just got off the phone with the OMNRF office. They said even though it says to do a mandatory report by phone or email by June 22, non residents form 33 is enough. So, Non residents, hunting through an Outfitter, DO NOT have to do the mandatory reporting!! This is a whole new system the OMNRF has implemented...
The OMNRF office is just as confused as us!!
Thanks for the info, see you nest Spring!
Thanks for keeping us posted all spring Chris! Great stuff!
