Some monsters for sure!
What is the purpose for all of the sticks shoved into the bait barrel? I’ve seen that done by guys before. Curious as to what the reason is.

Mostly just be an assclown to the bears. I’m sure they think “ I hate the *#%€ guy that keeps shoving those stupid sticks in the barrel. ‘ But bears find a lot of food by flipping logs, rolling them around and ripping them up so maybe makes the barrel and site more natural to them.

"...so maybe makes the barrel and site more natural to them." LOL! That's beautiful country and I have to admire you guys for putting in so much work and getting into so many bears. I'm sure it is a great time and I'd do it if I had the time and $$. Its just the issue with the blue barrels though. I understand you have to contain the bait and all. I was just thinking maybe a pit dug in the ground and covered with logs or something like that, maybe lined with heavy gauge visqueen so it doesn't all soak in, instead of the barrels? I realize I can go pound salt, but it just does not look all that 'natural'. That's just me, though. You guys are fine with it so no problem. What I think means squat, have a great season! That's a big boy right there above!

Trapper; it is the law in SK that bait be placed in containers. Never was a fan of barrels and didn’t use them until it became law. Most hunters find them real handy for judging bear size.

Thanks Rob, I get it, makes sense. Have a great season! I would like to venture up that way and try it out someday before I croak - won't be anytime soon probably. I'd like to go for the big bucks you guys have too. Its on the bucket list. I shoot heavier recurves (60s #). Do you accommodate those?

Jay Sileo and his first archery bear 19 15/16. He had an interesting first hunt. Saw 8 bears and had a grumpy sow chasing bears up trees all around him. This one showed up at 8:00 and he decided to shoot it so he wouldn’t have the crap scared out of him ever again. Has decided people who hunt bears with a bow are crazy! Dave Clark also saw eight and had bears running amok from the instant he got in the tree. Also had cubs up a neighboring tree for awhile. He had a good brown coming in but a sow chased him off. Pansy bear he called it.

Dave had a scary night last night- too damn many bears he said. 175 pound sow shook his ladder a couple times he thought she was coming up, very grumpy girl. A couple big ones rolled in late but light was not good so he passed did not want to shoot a bear with less than perfect fur. Figured he saw 15 different bears, all but one were different bears from the first day. He went for an early morning hunt today. Bears ripped the barrel off the tree during the night it is attached to tree with two 41/2” lag bolts thru chain. Bolts were severely bent and pulled out of tree. Guess I better get longer ones.

A case of mistaken identity ended Dave’s hunt on Thursday. Ground shrinkage was a factor but still a good bear at 18 2/16. He had lotsa fun watching pretty much non-stop bear action, figures he easily saw 20 + different bears during his hunt.

Lotsa rain last Wednesday made some trails pretty ugly had to break out the Argos to access some baits. The Defender finally met its match about 2 feet shy of dry ground in one really ugly mud hole that was no problem the day before.

Dave is a professional taxidermist and offered to make the habitat for my bear mount. I had built the base and collected the stumps I wanted a year ago but was happy a pro volunteered to help finish it.

Been busy guy but not dragging any yet. Woody Dills CT and Joe Chomko NJ are first time bear hunters and having a blast so far. Seeing lotsa bears but being patient and waiting on a jumbo. Wind has been erratic they sat different stands each night so far.

Woody’s first day on stand was action packed and I think another bear hunting fool has joined the ranks. I warned him it was addictive. I barely went 50 yards and he looked down and a bear was standing right under him, said he nearly jumped outta the stand, shat himself and had the big one simultaneously.

On the way in he was amazed at the amount of tracks in the wet spots. I confessed I have several bear feet mounted on pogo sticks so the boys get revved up to go sit in the bugs. My guides complain it’s dangerous work. Buncha Nancy’s.

We are about 4 days into “The green-up blues”; last few days have been hot and the vegetation is leafing out at an incredible pace. Fiddleheads popped up yesterday and were a foot tall this morning; some of the patches we checked yesterday were already eaten by bears today. Always have a few Sping days when natural food keeps jumbos busy but they always come back to the beaver eventually. The boys are patient and having fun so all good.

Been too dang busy to post here lately. Woody Dills could not pass up this chocolate boar 18 3/8” skull and beautiful fur. He had pretty much non-stop action every day. Texted us one night “Bring gun, nearly outta pepper spray “ 3 different bears climbed his tree several times and he was a tad jacked up about it. He is sad that he missed out by never hunting bears before said it was the most fun and excitement ever. He’ll be back. His pal Joe Chomko showed good restraint for a rookie and passed some respectable bears saying go big or go home. So he went home but hopes to be back for a go this Fall. He too wishes he had started this bear hunting nonsense a long time ago. They are both coming for 2020 early Spring hunt.

A few of the bears around the bait Woody sat at. He reported there was often 10 -12 bears in sight and said he was amazed by their antics and vocabulary as well as being scared $@&?less a few times.

Bob got to bed around midnight. Guide Richard had Him back in the stand by 4:30 AM. Cams revealed the big chocolate rolled in about 3 AM and the boys pushed him off. He will likely sit until 11:00. Winds are varied next several days so plan to put up another stand and clear a spot for a pop up when we pick him up. I think the sow he is with is also an older bear so more cautious than most. Bob has always wanted a big chocolate so it would be tough to tear him away from that spot. The other big chocolate we had on the go disappeared at green-up a week ago.

He’s a big target and Bob is a deadly shot. He has taken numerous black bears in addition to a polar bear, brown bear and grizzlies with a bow. He has lotsa great bear stories!

Morning hunter. The start of an unforgettable day in bear country. Bob was in the stand at 4 AM and had seen 6 bears when he caught a glimpse of brown fur coming his way. When the other bears exited stage left he grabbed his bow and the bear walked in and stopped 15 yards away. I’m sure he musta looked pretty wicked with the early morning sun shining on him.

Even highly experienced hunters can make mistakes. Bob texted that he shot the bear at 6 am but had rushed the shot and the hit was way higher than he wanted and maybe a bit forward also. Richard and I went in quietly at 7:00. Bob was not happy with himself but we told him there’s always a chance no matter what u think. I found good blood pretty quicklly and spirits picked up

We were seriously hoping for a quick tracking job The bear headed into the thickest, nastiest jungle of hazel brush, alder and willows I’ve ever had the misfortune to track in. For most of the way it was like a wall; you couldn’t even see a guy standing 10!feet away. I had to hang flagging tape about every 15 feet to mark the trail. To add to the fun a nasty plow wind a few years ago had flattened acres of giant poplar trees so there was deadfall from hell to contend with as well. I knew the bear was headed directly for a distant river but the bloodtrail was looking good and easy to follow except for the ridiculously thick bush slowed us down considerably. Maybe Bob will chime in and can better describe how unbelievably nasty it was.

It was kinda spooky following the blood in a maze of saplings with near zero visibility but the bear was really leaking so we pressed on. Progress seemed mighty slow and with zero wind it was getting pretty hot in that jungle. I estimated we had gone close to 350 yards before we found a bed. After another 15 yards we found another and Bobs arrow was in it exhibiting blood almost to the vanes. The blood trail dwindled a bit after that but it was still relatively easy to see. We debated whether to back out or continue: none of us were thrilled with the thought of quitting yet. After another 50 yards the bear bedded several times; usually a very good sign but once again he kept on going. We could now hear a set of rapids and knew the river was close. The bear headed downhill on a game trail that was somewhat clear a welcome change from what we just experienced. It was tough going for anyone; Bob is 82 and we were impressed with his total determination to keep going.

About 10 yards from the river a small waterhole showed evidence that the bear had lain there for a while. It was looking like we may have pushed him outta this bed and had discussion whether to back off. We decided to see if he swam the river. I spotted big tracks in the mud and then saw him walking briskly in thick willows on the other side. He quickly disappeared. We decided to give him a few hours and come back. GPS revealed it was 512 yards from the river to the baits site but the actual path taken by the bear likely added another 100. We left Bobs bow there because it was too tough to navigate it through the maze. I added lots more flagging tape on the way out.

After a quick lunch Bob hit the rack for a couple hours of much needed rest. We waded through the jungle again and we were back at the river at 4. Luckily for us a small island just 80 yards down stream made 2 narrow channels shallow enough to wade across. it was swift current but we got Us and all the gear across with only wet feet.

We found one small drop of blood where the bear went in the willows. I went up the river bank on a game trail and the boys remained looking for blood. I came to a small plateau with a game trail running parallel to the river. I followed it for about 80 yards but found no sign. I went the other direction and came to a little steam running from a spring down to the river. I thought to myself “ I bet he might be lying in this little trickle somewhere.” I glanced uphill and there he was laying 40 yards away. I’m not sure if Bob was the happiest camper on the planet when I told him I found the bear but he had to be up in the top 3 at least! If we had waited a few hours in the beginning before trailing he likely would not have made it across the river but it was a very hot day and the blood trail was encouraging. I was worried about the heat and the bear hide spoiling if indeed he was dead. Shoulda coulda woulda.

We skinned the bear out and I put the hide and skull in a big grain bag I brought along. Richard stayed with Bob for some frequent rest stops and I basically bulldozed my way back through that jungle hell with the bear. Some friendly neighbourhood bears had come along and pulled down a bunch of my flagging tape which really improved my mood. In places I got so tangled up in those hellacious saplings I couldn’t even move. The boys could hear the occasional loud F bomb coming from my direction. When I got back to the bait at sunset there was bears all over but I flopped down right there and almost went to sleep. Getting too old for all this fun!

Big thanks to guide Richard who never wavered. New to bow hunting but sucking it up like a sponge and loving it. He does a great job for all the clients and is an excellent tracker. And kudos to Bob for braving that trek 4 times and not breaking a hip or anything on a few tumbles. :) Me too for that matter I cratered several times!
