I’m new to elk hunting, this will be my first time in September. I somehow got lucky and drew a 2nd archery elk tag in NM unit 34. Anyone have any tips or suggestions on where I should look in this unit. Like certain elevations or anything that might help. Thanks

Many of the roads are in the bottom of the draws, and people don't like to hike uphill.

I've applied for that tag for many years and never drawn it. Congrats.

I've been there twice but it's been quite a few years now....you will love this hunt and were REALLY lucky to draw it!

The mescalero sits right between 34 and 36. Technically not part of either.

I was being a wise guy. when I ride my mountain bike I can see into the rez

Driving to Cloudcroft from the casino one morning at about 2am, I'm guessing I saw at least 1000 elk on the Rez property. Bunch of wild horses too.

Those weren't wild horses. They have been trained like sheep dogs but keep elk on the Mescalero instead of herding sheep. :-)
