Bowhunting bushy tails
Missouri's squirrel season opened up the last week of May and I have been taking full advantage of the target rich environment around my house with both bow and flintlock. I have been fattening up the little SOBs all winter long on high-dollar sunflower seeds from my bird feeders so it is time to reap what I have sown, so to speak.
I live out in the country and my house backs right up against the woods. My living room and kitchen both have sliding glass doors and I can ease those open to launch flu-flus at the critters without the trouble of getting dressed up or covering myself with tick spray. My daughter finds my antics quite hilarious for some reason and often tells me, "You may be a redneck if..." I don't care. It's good shooting practice and I do love a young gray fried up with taters, gravy, and a cathead biscuit.
It is a lot of fun. I cut my teeth squirrel hunting in Missouri. I would roam our farm with a single shot 22 by myself by the time I was 8. When I started bowhunting, squirrels became a target there as well. Still used the 22 more as I could put more meat on the table that way. ;)
There’s no closed season on the rotten ba$tards at my place! (Fox squirrels) I try to keep em thinned down with the pellet gun while they’re either stuffing their faces at the bird feeder, or chewing on my cedar decking. I’m back in the sticks as well. When I shelled out over a grand to fix the fuel injector sensor wires on my pickup that they chewed off, I figure payback is a bitch!
During my childhood my family lived on a farm on the Little Niangua River in Missouri. My Dad allowed us kids to get as 22 at the age of 8. It was the summer of 1962 when I took my first game animal with my 22. A grey squirrel with a head shot like my Dad had taught me. We ate a lot of squirrel at time. Unfortunately, many kids today miss out on the excitement of squirrel hunting.
Most importantly - do you eat the brains?
I grew up hunting squirrels, up here was mostly the larger Fox Squirrels, with an occasional Grey ... a scoped .22 with HP's.... I'd kill 75+ a season in those days and sell the tails to Mepps ..... we ate the heck out of 'em... no brains either ..lol ..... killed some with an old Pearson recurve/FluFlu's and blunts, but mainly the .22 and on occasion a shotgun ... I still look forward to every Aug. 15th here, which is when our 'fall' season opens, I'll be out again with the .22 again this season .. .....
Like all of you, I grew up hunting squirrels. We never ate the brains but I can remember going to one of my dad's friend's house for a squirrel fry and that family all cracking the fried heads against the edge of the table like walnuts. Again, like most of you, I got out of squirrel hunting for several years. What got me back into it was when I took up bowhunting and then took up traditional muzzleloader hunting. I have a flintlock 12 gauge smoothbore that I call Ole Betsy and she is a squirrel killing machine! I love starting the morning with a cloud of blue smoke in the air.
