Wondering what some of the experienced elk killers prefer for an archery set-up. Broadhead/arrows etc. I’m shooting 70lbs 29 inch draw.

Killed a bunch of elk with longbows from 55 to 70 pounds, arrows from 425 to 680 grains (wood, aluminum, and carbon), and 2, 3, and 4 blade broad heads over the years.

I prefer an arrow from 450-525 grains and a three blade VPA or Snuffer up front. Usually get good, short blood trails. If you hit them in the ribs at the right angle!

Maxima red 250s cut to 29" 100gr slick trick with blazers/aae Max hunters. PSE with 60# 30" draw. Might switch to a heavier arrow when I restring this bow, but I like how the reds fly.

I use the same simple trad bow and 2 blade heads for everything. You have enough bow to make all sorts of combinations work. Elk are big and elk country is tough on gear. Strong, simple gear is a good fit.

Recurve: Black Widow 55#, Carbon Express 350 w/ 200 grain VPA 3 blade, total of 615 grns

Compound: Hoyt Defiant 70#, Victory RIP w/ 75 grn insert and 100 grn Slick Trick, total of 480 grns.

As long as your arrow is reasonably heavy, WELL TUNED to your bow, and you hit them in the right place your setup will work.

Mostly 53-57# longbows and recurves, 450 grain arrow package with various 125 grain broadheads up front. Using Iron Wills currently, but I think I've killed elk with a dozen different fixed blade broadheads over the years. The most important thing is a sharp broadhead from a well-tuned setup that flies true.

VAP Elite V-1 350 spine @ 27-1/2" arrow. Tipped with a 100 grain Iron Will vented & 95 grain steel insert, total arrow weight 425 grains. My Son shoots a similar arrow with generally a 400 grain to 410 grain arrow weight. 50 bulls down with this aprox arrow weight although a variety of heads have been used over the years. This Iron Will is at the top of list!
