Ryan and I had the good fortune of being invited out to join HUNT MAN (Hunter) on a bear hunt in ID. Hunter puts in his time, effort, and money each year to get a kid out in the mountains to chase bears and I pestered him about it a few years ago, wondering if Ryan might be able to weasel in on the opportunity sometime. It didn't work for the next two years for a couple reasons, but it came together this year.

Departure was a little sketchy when Ryan qualified for the state golf tourney in MN, but we left at a reasonable time and made our way out to the western edge of MT to meet up with Hunter. Hunter actually had an archery shoot for the first couple days, but he teamed up with us in camp on Day 3. Ryan and I both immediately liked him and really appreciated his energy and positive attitude-- what a good dude! We couldn't be more thankful to him and consider ourselves very lucky to have had the chance to go out there to play in the mountains. Hopefully he and Ridge can join us chasing muskies sometime in the future!

Below is a little photo essay of our trip. I won't do a lot of typing, other than a few headings, so you won't have to read my blather on and on... :)

Bring it on Scoot! Would agree completely with you how much time, effort, and money Hunt puts into this every year to try and help others experience it. He’s one of the best and I consider him one of my dearest friends!

Our routine was to get up in the morning and run bait out before it got warm out. After that, it was fishing and goofing off in the mountains until about 5:00 PM, when we'd head for the stand.

There was always entertainment at the bait. The little critters were plentiful! The animals, sounds, and even the smells all screamed "mountains" to me and I loved it! Ryan was getting his first exposure to all of this and it was really great for me to be there with him for that.

K114 is a beautiful knife! Mark did a really amazing job with it and we were honored to have it in camp with us. Here are a couple pics of it when I took it out in the stand for a bit.

About 30 minutes into the sit on Day 2 I heard Ryan say "there are bears". Because I was facing away from him and totally unprepared for bears to show up that early, I had to stand up, turn around, and find the bears. I assumed a sow and cubs since he clearly had said "bears" with an "s". But, I never did see what we believe was a sow that went above the bait. The boar (we think) did come in, however.

Ryan was at full draw twice and the bear was a mere 11 yards away from us! However, he never presented an ethical shot and Ryan wisely held off. I was proud of him. Twice the bear was broadside, but the first time there were branches partially blocking his vitals and the second time he was slowly walking for about three or four steps. When he stopped he immediately swung around into the position in the top of the two pics in this post- too sharply quartering to us for a good shot. He was at full draw for that pic, but I whispered softly "no, no, no..." Afterwards, he said he wasn't going to shoot and he didn't need me to tell him that!

This was the first bear we had ever seen while bear hunting and it was quite a rush! Ryan was shaking and his veins were filled with adrenaline! I was excited about the encounter and realized that bear was a gnat's eyelash away from Ryan running him through. But... bowhunting so often requires things to work out just right and it didn't this time (at least for us- it worked out great for the bear!)

Unfortunately, that was the first and last "real encounter" with a bear for us. We did see a yearling bear the 3rd night, but it smelled us and ran away without getting close to the bait. We were skunked the last night. We considered it a big success to finally see some bears and we had a blast!

We left Hunt a little message in the tree! I think he'll appreciate it!!! Hahaha

Hunter, we can't thank you enough for having us out there. We had a blast and really enjoyed out brief time hanging out with you in camp. Hopefully next time we get to hang a little more and maybe I'll even be able to talk you into bringing Ridge out to camp and you guys camping with us for a night or two. I also definitely mean it about the offer for chasing muskies-- tell me when and we'll do it! I'm making two trips in July and you are welcome on either or both! If those don't work, just say the word and I'll make it happen sometime in the future.

This trip was really a special one for Ryan and me. Ryan's first mountain experience was great, being the beneficiaries of another Bowsiter's kindness was humbling and a great learning experience for Ryan (and me), and being part of K114's journey was also another really unique and priceless part of the whole experience. No doubt we are blessed and thankful for the whole thing!

Another awesome trip guys! These adventures with our kids are always too short but the memories sure last. Hunt is a damn fine individual, I sincerely hope I get the chance to meet him sometime! Thanks for sharing it with us!

Tell Ryan not to feel too bad about the bears. I passed up a dandy boar the very first night I ever sat in a bear stand because I was bound and determined to kill one bigger than Nichole's pumpkinhead bear. Well I sat in a tree for 9 days and never saw another one! I feel his pain!

Scott,

As I said in the other post, you are a great mentor and father!

Ryan, you made a very tough decision to not shoot, (a lot of guys would have shot) that is very commendable! Great job!

I would call this a very successful hunt!

I can’t resist.....Per usual great pictures and story from Scoot. Also per usual Scoot puts the big hex on bear hunting. I’ve seen him have great “luck” on so many critters, but he smells bad to the bears. That’s all I can figure! Ryan, next time you get a bear tag in MN we are going to put your dad in a different stand one night and one night only. I’ll sit with you if you’d like. We’ll fix that jinx!

All kidding aside, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again if I can be half the dad to my kids that Scoot is I’ll be doing a damn fine job.
