Hard to post a hero picture of a rifle kill the neighbor got on the BOWSITE. You seem to have no problem finding plenty of old rifle kills to post on the BOWSITE.

See you this fall. The property we leased should have plenty of deer on it that you fed all year. We might even get a chance to kill one of then with BOW before your rifle hunt starts.

Gotta disagree somewhat, ohio. Can’t kill a 200” deer if you shoot him when he’s 170”. Granted, lots of variables and factors involved in, hopefully, getting him to 200”, and getting a crack at him, too.

Ohio to your point you’re spot on. On 50, 80 and even 160 acres I likely won’t pass a 170”. Had I known how old that buck was before I killed him and he made it through the rut I likely would have passed him though. Outside the rut he didn’t leave the 160 acre parsel I had sole access to. I assumed he was 4 and didn’t think I had previous experience with him. After killing him I found his 2 year old 120” sheds 10 yards away. Most 170”ers in my area weren’t 120” the year before so unless I realize they have that sorta potential they are getting an arrow.

Ohiohunter, I think your post is applicable to nearly every thread that extends beyond about 15 posts.

Take the elk forum...somebody asks for photos of a "300 bull" so he has a frame of reference for an upcoming hunt. Only takes about 15 posts before it becomes a contest with posts of the biggest bulls anyone has ever taken, including with rifle, Dodge Ram, whatever. Then we get posts about how score doesn't matter, it's all about hearing the squirrels and birds chirping in the trees that make the hunt special.

And so it goes.......

From: 1boonr

I hate squirrels because they chew antlers and treestand seats. If you live near Olney Illinois you could see a white squirrel. White doesn’t absorb as much sunlight so it is s cooler clothing to wear. It is a preferred color for camo when you hunt in the winter. Because of global warming we won’t need it much longer.

I've shared this before but these are my 2 best whitetails. 179 4/8 and 191 3/8, both net typical. Taken in 2007 and 2018 in Kansas. I'm proud to say that the ones I remember most are also the biggest ones. The ones that require everything I've got to outsmart them. It could be that guys who say score doesn't matter haven't spent an entire season or two trying to get the single biggest buck in your area. Most years I fail but now and then my persistence pays off. When that happens, the experience is greater than the score but when you find out the score is exceptional, well, that just adds to an already unbelievable experience. I will never apologize for being a hunter and I will never apologize for pursuing the biggest and smartest animal on any given hunt.

From: M.Pauls

My biggest compound buck was 195 5/8 net NT, and my biggest recurve buck, can’t remember what it netted because it wasn’t great, but grossed 170ish. Scores mean something to me because they are the measuring stick, but once I kill an animal I’m proud of, I hardly care what the number “actually” shakes out at.

Ah, so painful for me because big whitey's are my nemesis. I've arrowed one that grossed over 160 but have messed up on so many bigger, in some cases much bigger bucks that I can't stand it. Three posts above stand out. "We don't measure our deer and we don't measure our wives", "This is the worst thread on the Bowsite" and the way JSW eloquently explained how he will never apologize for appreciating that number on the tape. It is a thought provoking subject. We've all been programmed to measure things, since a very early age. One of the first things we tell each other after the birth of a newborn in the weight, right? And the bigger the better. Dad's proud because his little 9lb10oz baby boy is gonna be the next best QB the NFL has ever seen. Even Mom's is gonna brag about how hard it was to push out "little" Johnny to all the other Mom's. So it starts at birth. But to a lot of us, hunting, especially WT hunting, is just so personal. And also, a lot of us are so challenged in that we don't live in areas where the possibility of taking truly big WT's really ever exists. So it's no wonder this subject stirs the pot here like it does. I'm totally with Willie when he says something as sacred as my wife should not be measured, but I am also 100% on board with JSW's thoughts that years of effort in the relentless pursuit of the biggest buck in the county should absolutely be quantified, and there should be no apologies for it. Great subject. Really hope I can add a little more to this one someday...

My biggest is a mid 120” ish (Never measured). South Dakota.

We were pheasant hunting and bow hunting deer in the late 90s.

I was in a field with the dogs pheasant hunting and my dad and uncle drive up yelling they just saw a good buck cross a 2 track and go into a corn field. And so they went back and got my dads bow and his arrows. For me to go after it.

I’m thinking, ok you saw a deer :45 ago go into a typical 600 acre SD cornfield.

I start out on the track and am talking to myself, saying, Self this is the biggest waste of time.

I’m going row to row looking into the next row then step. Then repeat. About :30 in and there he is bedded. His butt towards me and is front legs head and neck forming and L shape and his head is in the middle of the corn stalks.

I back out sneak down closer and pop back out just under 30 yds. (No range finder then)

With his butt facing me I need to thread the arrow just in front of the rear Ham.

I draw slowly step out and shoot.

I blood trail and track this deer out of the field and the tracks lead into nothing but a mile of dirt field. So not seeing the deer laying there I regroup and get help.

We take up the trail. Now with my own bow setup. Track the deer to a 60 yard yards across Swail. The grass is only 18” tall so he can’t hide in there.

The tracks go in and don’t come out.

We are all scratching our heads talking. And the deer jumps up with grass and mud in his antlers and runs across the dirt field into another corn field.

I stay on the track. No blood

I find him bedded again in the corn. And make a better shot. Killing the deer.

The first arrow had apparently glanced off the rear lower leg and skipped up and grazed his muzzle.

So the initial blood trail was a lower leg and nose wound.

I’ve killed quite a few in that class. No big ones. My wife is the whitetail killer. 184” Kansas and some other good Kansas and Iowa deer.

She killed a good one behind our house last year 8th of oct

I haven’t killed him yet. But I’m a hopeless dreamer and optimist ;). He’s there. So there’s always a chance

No clue, but he wouldn’t score much; one of those “stud” bucks - a 2X4.

But he was a big dude!

Right around 175 lbs that is . The backstraps were 22" each= 44 plus 6" in diameter =12 , so 44 plus 12 comes to about a score of about 56".

Bow. NJ. Recent. Green scored 168 2/8 10 pt (gross). 193 lbs dressed . Never shot a mature buck with a gun - no clue how to even hunt with a gun. Lot's of good one's with bow several really good P&Y into the 140's in this state but this one just shattered the 150" mark into very unrealistic territory for me in this state.
