A3 in Arizona helped the raffle tag winner with a beauty. Rifle kill but sure reinforces the growth/moisture is great.

That's a beautiful bull, but personally I think that bull needed to attain its full potential and wait until it was hard horned. Personally...

Great bull!! I doubt It would have put much more antler, either, if any.

Personally I don't care how a legal ethical hunter hunts. More power to him or her that they are physically able to get out and stir their stumps in the pursuit of critters.

That is awesome that this guy was successful in bagging a great elk.

I can't wait to see more pictures of bulls regardless of the weapon.

16-Jul-19
I agree...25$ raffle ticket, public land, it’s a feast for the eyes. I personally prefer hard horned also but the tag expires August 15. Time to git er done.

They carry velvet around 3 weeks after growing is done so he was likely there.

COOL!

SO, dumb question but elk are done growing their antlers already??

From: nmwapiti

I expect he would continue to add some length and mass for several more weeks. Didnt realize any state let you hunt them in july.

Congratulations to the hunter!

AZ bulls seem to finish early, especially the big boys. This bull was likely done growing. I would love to have a big velvet bull on the wall!

Great bull and that AZ raffle is an awesome program for conservation!

There are elk bull rifle tags in Colorado that start in July as well...

" Didnt realize any state let you hunt them in july."

If you have the money to buy a Commissioners Tag, or are lucky in drawing the raffle tag, Arizona allows you to hunt year round in almost any unit in the state.

Great bull and what a cool opportunity for the guy.

Once antler tips start looking pointy you know they're pretty much done growing.

16-Jul-19
Congrats on a beautiful bull. I will buy more tickets next year.

This permit raised $162,300 for elk conservation in Arizona. Not bad for a raffle.

"Amazing bull! Congrats to the hunter. That is a solid chunk of change Heat! Good for AZ conservation!"

That's a good amount for sure and its in good hands but I'd say 3 of these tags per species is enough. For the record I am not in favor of any more of these tags in our state. There are two Commissioner's tags and this Super Raffle tag. 3 permits per species to pretty much legally poach is plenty.

There have been multiple attempts by internal forces to get more tags for raffles and auction in the name of conservation and now education. I'm not in favor.

From: StickFlicker
17-Jul-19
Heat, +1 on everything you said, with the possible exception of the funds being in good hands. It is the government after all...

From: Brotsky
17-Jul-19
Heat +2, fully agree. Those tags can be a slippery slope as I'm sure our friends in Utah can tell us!

From: nmwapiti
17-Jul-19
Guess I am in the minority here, but I disagree with the whole idea. Shooting a big bull in a prime AZ unit in july is not hunting. There are better ways to raise money.

From: Junior
18-Jul-19
Yea normal people wait till September when everybody and there brother has already hunted them...;)...I'm sure the winner is just playing via the rules....

From: DConcrete
18-Jul-19
But shooting a bull when he’s the most Vulnerable in September because of the rut is hunting?

I love elk hunting and I’ll hunt them in any season that is open. But to declare hunting them in July isn’t hunting is arrogant. Especially considering the advantages that September affords you during the rut.

From: ELKMAN
18-Jul-19
Beautiful bull, like they all are. Not something I would personally take part in...

18-Jul-19
The rules are 1 year tag August 15-August 15. Any open unit. Last year was crap for growth so he reaped the reward of waiting. Elk hunting is elk hunting if the opportunity presents itself and is legal. I’d certainly kill a giant velvet bull if I had the tag and it expired in August but that’s me.

From: nmwapiti
18-Jul-19
Let me rephrase...killing a big bull in july in a prime area is not much of a challenge. I could walk into half a dozen units here in utah and kill something in the 400 range if I could do it in july. The reason I chase big animals is the difficulty. AZ made the challenge getting the tag, not hunting.

18-Jul-19
