Well hell--------->

Good luck, Robb

Then in like 24 hours I sold my 2007 22FBLite Toy Hauler for $7,200.00

I got to only using it once a year so it had been a great camp over the many years but it was time for it to go.

Now to find a new truck-------->

From: BULELK1
09-Aug-19
I was going to order a new 2019 but it go so far into the summer that every dealer was telling me to give it a month and go with a 2020 Model

A new 2020 F350 regular cab 6.2 gas engine ect was right @ $53k...…..Nah, not for me as I had been spoiled having the V10 on my last 3 F350's and I just didn't need the 1 ton anymore.

So I started looking at other options for downsizing in a truck.

From: BULELK1
09-Aug-19
It came down to a Toyota Tacoma but for me, that dink size truck bed was worthless so I needed the longer bed and I had to get one from another dealer sent in that had the longer bed so I'm like Okay, let me sleep on it as it was kissing $47k, for a 2020 1/4 ton truck.

My ex had 2 Tacoma's over the years and they had been great for her and we did get her the longer bed on her 2nd one, much better.

Then I stopped at my Jeep dealer to get my new iPhone XR sinc with my 2017 Wrangler and there on the showroom floor was one of those new 2020 Jeep Gladiators, 1/2 ton.

It had already on it the Mopar/Fox warranty lift kit, bigger/high end 18's and tires and a sprayed in bed liner for $2,680.00 more than the basic Tacoma I was considering to buy.

No Brainer for me!!

Nice looking Gladiator, Robb! I definitely think those things look tough. The killer for me was bed length. I stopped by a local dealer and looked at one, but took too long contemplating how I would be able to fit two bow cases, totes, and a deer in that thing. I'm sure you'll figure it out! Congrats on the new addition to the family!

Congrats! Interesting looking rig. Hope it works well for you. That does sound like a decent deal on your F350 for whoever got it. I just got a new 2019 F150 FX-4 in ruby red. Waiting on the new cap to come in.

BTW.....a humble observation. Taking off my camo hunting hat and putting on my military protocol hat, if all of those flags are on the same staff, the two small ones should be below the national ensign. The only flag that is allowed to fly above the national ensign is the church pennant during divine services. Figured I'd humbly mention that......

To piggy back on what JL said, that BYU flag next to the UW flag aint going to cut it either. Burn the blue one, or use as TP, either way. Get a UW flag slightly smaller than the Stars and Stripes and just below it and you are good to go.

Enjoy your Jeep, looks good. You will be amazed on how much you can get in the bed. Or at lest how much "junk" you will not be taking with you.

As to resale, yea you could resale the Rubicon for more, but at a out the door price north of $60K, not sure you would re-the extra cost. I have a ZR2, 5 foot bed, it hauls 3 M150's, game cart, 2-sets of climbing sticks back packs, coolers and other stuff under a tonneau cover with no problem.

Thanks for your input fella's, always enjoyable and worth will to read thru them.

I've always been more of a Need vs Nice, Nice vs Need type guy when I am spending high dollar amount. It does seem to equal out. So no Ford King Ranch or Jeep Rubicon for me.

Keep in mind I am willingly Down sizing I just can't go with a 1/4 ton with a 1/4 size truck bed width and length.

At least I may still only have a 5' 3 " long bed But I have the extra Width of a 1/2 ton.... I 'm feeling more comfortable with it each day.

Yes, being ex Navy I was/am aware of the Protocol on a raised Flag......I'll modify it this week.

Now Back to the Build-------->

From: BULELK1

Some of my buds here in the area are bigtime Upland Bird Hunters and have always had some type of built in storage drawer system in the bed of the truck.

They had those High End bird dogs riding on top of it in those travel kennels and all of this under a truck shell like LEER or ARE ect…..

1 major point they made with this type system was that they never really had to M T out the truck bed after each trip and then reload it before the next trip as most everything stayed in the secure storage draw area.

I liked that idea a lot

With a 25% off voucher from my Jeep Gladiator purchase in the Mopar/Jeep store, I went with this Decked System.

A dang good challenge for 1 man as it weights like 218 assembled.....

I will admit I am far from the sharpest crayon in the box, so please elaborate on a few points if you will. Please don't take these comments as me being a wise guy, because I have been thinking down sizing as well. I currently drive a Ram 1500, but the better gas mileage options of Tacomas & Rangers are definitely appealing. Downsizing is one thing, but I can't wrap my head around installing a 2 drawer system in an already small truck bed. Just based on pictures alone, it appears that you have effectively cut your useable bed space in half. Then with the solid folding bed top, it looks as though you have 3" of space to stack stuff on top of the drawers. Perhaps I missed it, but are you planning on installing some type of rack system over top of the bed, to accommodate more loading area? The roof top rack is a nice touch, but how much of a pain in the rear is heaving heavy coolers and stuff on top of that? My biggest quandry looking at your new rig, is when you put a nice bull elk on the ground, how are you getting all the meat & antlers home? I'm following this one closely, because you definitely have my attention! That Jeep looks even sweeter with the new tires & wheels!

Nice rig. They are supposed to come out with a diesel next year?

Done any towing yet? I have a larger 7x14 tandem axle trailer and wonder how they will do.

In the past, for the $$$ they ask, I was never impressed with smaller details like fit/finish and comfy seats ... have they addressed that these days?

I still am not too eager to pull the trigger on $50k+ trucks (70k for diesels), so will likely stick with my used 2012 F350 diesel with 190k on it.

Okay, morning----->

I averaged 18.79 mpg on my trip and I did do some 4 x 4 driving up into Sheep county on some knarly rough rocky FS dirt roads.

I am putting a shell on when they/Leer start manufacturing them in mid-October, like I stated earlier; the Tri-Fold is just temporary.

I am really liking that drawer system already. I put all my luggage on my trip to Dubois in the 1 drawer and it was sweet to have it weather free and very secure out of sight. See my Decked link above for all kinds of storage/storing options.

I did have to put my cooler on the back seat but it is one of those drain plug Less coolers like early Yeti......

On my hunts, like stated earlier, I tow my lil 5 x 8 enclosed trlr even behind the 2010 F350...….'llI put a harvested Rack in the top Yakima rack, it has to be brainless to cross state lines so the Rack will be caped and basically just a skull plate and Antlers.....no biggy.

I would never over load a Roof rack with a bunch of stuff...….Nor do I want that 'look' on any of my rigs......To each his own for sure though.

I'm old school and won't tow until I have over 1000 miles on the New Truck so I am over 1200 now and am doing my first tow job this coming week with my 8 x 12 enclosed RZR2 trlr with the RZR2 loaded in side. I'll let ya know how it handles in those big strong Canyon high winds we have out here in the Rockie mnt states and I will let ya know how it tows up and over Trappers Loop road going by Snowbasin Ski Resort.

Rock Tamers doesn't show any type of Semi Truck option just Pick up trucks and SUV on the website (see link above)

I personally wish they had about 2 more inches of width as like I stated earlier, when your Rolling Big Rubber they throw a lot of rocks and pebbles, not just from the outside but also from the inside of the tire ~~~ back at the vehicle behind you and I don't want to chip some ones windshield so I totally enjoy the Rock Tamers.

I don't know if they are going to do a Diesel engine, I have no interest in a diesel engine, sorry I haven't even looked into it.

Whew...….!! I think I have touch base on ya'lls questions? And answered the Private questions.

I'll have more follow-up mid week after my first Tow Job Robb trip! haha

Thanks again,

Robb

Bull, if you have to drive offroad in the snow or rutted two-track road.....what does the ground clearance look like?

From: map1

I like the jeep but how's the power it's only a few hundred pounds lighter than a crew cab chevy v8? I have the v6 in an AWD charger and it's a rocket but the chargers 500 lighter than the jeep. That v6 is a great engine.

I'll get under and do a new clearance measurement since the bigger rims and tires went on, maybe today if I get a chance good idea to get that new clearance measurement.

I've searched for a new front winch bumper/lights combo but I'm having a hell of a time finding one for a 2020...…………

I'll post some pix of yesterdays add on project.

Travel safe JC, ya have my number if ya need any thing along the way.

Thanks all,

I put Air Bags on all my F350's over the years, I just like the stability they add while towing or with the occasion camper I've had in the bed of a truck.

We even put them on my ex's 2011 long bed Tacoma and it was nice for when she towed something.

I got educated using this style on my 2017 Jeep Wrangler. I'm a wiz now at installing them! haha

I've put the Air Lift 5000's on my last 2 trucks. Only way to tow or even when you just have a big load in the bed. Super easy to install, too.

The airbag thing has me curious. I just got a brand new 2019 F150 FX4 with the max tow package.....11.9 or 13K lbs I think it was. Do airbags affect the warranty? The suspension on this truck is already beefed up so I'm not sure airbags would do for the truck?? There aren't any coil springs on the back.

From: map1
18-Aug-19
Anytime you add after market items the warranty is affected.

From: Ambush
18-Aug-19
If you carry anything more than about four hundred pounds in modern half or heavy half pickups, you will be happy to have good airbags. And spring for the onboard compressor option. More money and work initially, but the going forward convenience is the payback. Just measure from fender to tire before putting the load in, then adjust airbags after loading to return to that spec.

From: JL

"Anytime you add after market items the warranty is affected."

That depends on what the aftermarket install was.

From: midwest
18-Aug-19
Agree with Ambush. I didn't spring for the onboard compressor but will probably add it later. After you unhook and unload at elk camp, you'll want to drop the air. When you load back up to move camp or head home, you'll need to use a portable compressor to air back up or stop at the nearest gas station.

From: BULELK1
19-Aug-19
That is the style I have had on all my F350's 'midwest' a bit more beefy for a bigger payload truck size.

True that, it depends on what you do to the truck OEM that affects the warranty adding a leaf or an Airbag set-up doesn't but going Over the warranty max tow amount would.

Okay, to answer some of the questions early about clearance and storage options....

This is what I use to add air after I have unhooked and released air but am fixin' to tow/travel.

It also works great on 15 or 16 inch tires to top off PSI if they get a lil low during a trip, Not so much for 18--20 inch tires though.

I had to do a Test Hook-Up and pre tow inspection before I go for a RZR2 ride this week.

I'm set right at 15lbs of Airbag/Air Pressure, 1,800 lbs Dry Weight 8 x 12, single axle trlr.

The RZR2 with a full tank of gas and some misc crap in the rear box is right at 879lbs, round up to 900lbs

For a total tow of 2,700 lbs.

I did like 5 miles just around here in town, a few small hill climbs and coming down checking the brakes with this load on and I am pretty damn happy.

Good luck, Robb

I'm out of here first thing in the morning for my first real towing test fully loaded with the RZR2 for a lil ride to deliver some firewood to a remote property camp from a tree that I have cut up since it blew down after our last round of brutal thunderstorms.

Should be a good test first tow as I will be going up Weber Canyon with those damn morning canyon winds of 35--50 mph and then a dang good climb up and over, I'm just as interested in how the new truck handles towing down steep winding road as I am towing up it!

Report to follow

Good luck, Robb

Congratulations. Sweet looking ride. What's towing capacity on these rigs what motor they running! I owned a Rubicon it was great for off road but lacked towing! Big Dan turned me on to my current truck 06 Cummins mega cab! I will keep this truck until I can't. It sucks off road but I can tow all the toys one can imagine.

I left early from the house here @ 0430 to try and beat the worst of the morning Canyon wind so I only had 29.39 wind to fight! (accuweather app)

Towing went just fine, no overheating of the brakes on the steep winding down part of the tow and I stayed between 3,500--4,500 RPM's/ 45-50 mph speed, on the long steep tow Up and over.

After filling up before I left, putting 108 miles round trip, filling up after I got back, I had an average mile per gallon of 14.41.

I'm pretty dang happy with the performance of the 3.6 engine and the tow ass end differential gear ratio.

All and All-------->

I feel just fine with my Down Sizing from my 2010 F350 long bed V10 to this 2020 Jeep Gladiator 1/2 ton 5'3 long bed.

I was really looking forward to bigdan's critique of his new A-Frame Fold Up/Down hard sided front deck Toyhauler but sadly we won't hear about it, Godsend bigdan.

As it would have been perfect for me and my 1/2 ton.

It's been fun with you guys--------> thanks.

Robb, how does that thing do in the steep hills? I have a 2014 unlimited rubi stick and it has no ass whatsoever in the mountains on steep inclines. I am in firewalled in fourth gear and can't stay near 60 mph to save my life. I can't imagine towing a trailer load on top of that.....I think i'd be in 2nd going 20 mph at best.

Yes I like having the side smaller lights angled out and flipped sideways as the Main bigger light covers my East to West (left/right) really well, but I like the angled side lights to cover more North and South (up/down) and off to the side of the road/mountain side as it really helps seeing 'Eye's' reflecting so I don't get in a wreck!

It's really nice to be able to park behind my gate fully hooked up, now that I sold my Toyhauler (as stated earlier in this thread) in my downsizing pursuit.

Yes, I have been working with an engineer @ LEER on a shell/topper that they plan to have available in Jan/2020, keeping in mind having a Decked system already installed and maybe going with side access windows along with the standard rear entry.

Any-hooo I'm out of here, travelling by 0500 on my elk hunt here in my home state, they have what they call a Premium/Multi Season tag that allows the tag holder to hunt all 3 seasons, bow Any Weapon, muzzy. Kinda kool to hunt elk for almost 8 weeks on the same tag. Granted you can only harvest 1 Bull elk with this tag, not 3......haha

I just did a quickie trip over to Colorado this wknd via Laramie, Wyoming and I got quite a few complements on the look of my JP Gladiator and Many questions about how I got my shell/topper, with Leer/ARI ect not making them for a full year and toss in the set backs from C-19....

I bought a new 4x4 last year. Looked at the Jeep Gladiator and the Ram 1500 Rebel. I have no doubt that the Jeep Gladiator is a superior truck for off road driving...especially rock climbing out west. However, the Gladiator did not have a very comfortable ride on the paved road while the Ram drove like a car. The Ram has good off road capabilities...just not as good as a Gladiator. Comfort versus 4x4 capability. Which is more important to your use?

I've seen a few Gladiators driving around now and they look real sharp. I've owned a few Willys wagons and a truck, so I have a bit of an attraction anyway.

That's a good looking rig, Robb! Sure is gonna look great with an elk rack spoiler in the roof rack!

I know it makes it so much more usable and practical, but the topper does take away from the good ole Jeep look that sets them so much apart.
