No real details other than Dan was hunting antelope in Nevada. Supposedly the F&G found him in his camper. Just learned this tragic news from Dyrk Eddie after he talked to Dan's wife.
That is sad news for sure. Being nearly 80 years myself, too many of my friends, some younger and some older have passed recently. Dan will surely be missed. my best, Paul

Dan was a good guy!...RIP Brother!
A legend. RIP Bigdan. Prayers to the family. At least he's with Cody now.
I was just listening to his audio interview and came back over to see this... very sad. It was good seeing him back in April at P&Y. He was telling us about his trip out from Montana and the route he had to take due to the snow and ice. Horrible news. RIP, Danny.
Wow. Very sad news indeed. RIP Dan. You will be missed by many.
Wow. Very sad indeed. Great man and will be missed by many.
Very sad to hear this morning. You always made the people around you laugh. You were doing what we all love, bowhunting. RIP Big Danny Moore. My prayers are with your family.
Horrible news. Probably the greatest archery elk hunter there was. Glad I got to meet him at the P&Y this year. RIP
He lived it! While its very sad news he just kept going and going no matter what cards were dealt. I'd like to think he passed in his sleep thinking about next days hunt. No doubt Maggie was right there with him.
Take care Dan!
Terrible news for sure, our time here is so short. God Bless him and his family. His posts and knowledge here on Bowsite will be missed.
So sorry to hear this today. Prayers for his family in such a difficult time.
He will remain as an inspiration to many of us. RIP BigDan.
This is awful news! My prayers go out to him and his friends and family. Had the pleasure of meeting Danny at the Bowsite gathering in Phoenix. He and his wife were super nice. He contributed a lot around here and he will be sorely missed.
Sad to hear. I used to live about 200 yds from Dan's Big Sky Archery store. I liked Big Dan's sense of humor and used to stop by just to BS with him. He told things as he saw them, he definitely will be missed.
Sad news....Praying for Dan & his family
What a shock we were scheduled to hunt Az together last year and I blew out my knee so we were rescheduling for next year.RIP buddy Lewis
Very sad news. Great guy and a legend... I hope it was peaceful and am sending prayers to his family.
I know he was heart broken after his son passed. I’d like to think Dan is happier than ever to be with him again. A legend to most of us Big Dan will live on forever in our hearts and minds as well as on this forum. RIP brother.
Praying for his family, when it comes time for me to go I hope it can be on a hunting trip being that’s where my mind and soul are happiest.
Ouch.......that is terrible. I always enjoyed his knowledge and success. RIP Dan.
Prayers out to his friends and family, always enjoyed reading his posts. Certainly had some nice trophy photos. He went out doing something he loved, hunting,.not too bad, God speed.
A great guy who will be sorely missed by many.
He was a guy that got it done. Prayers for his family and friends.
A true outdoorsman till the end. R.I.P
Shot to the guts for sure. Loved hearing about all the people he helped and his one pic sitting on that bull is still a fave of mine. Which is actually odd cause normally I don't like pics where guys sit on animals. He will be missed.
Prayers for his wife and family.
Man that tuff to take, prayers, live life everyone
Ohhhh, that is a shock! So sad, as others have said -- prayers to his family. Some day if your walking through the woods and all of the sudden a Hoochie Mama lands at your feet, you'll know Danny is having another good laugh. RIP
Dangit man. Mr. Dan helped with lots of info when I drew an Arizona elk tag. I was very grateful for that. I can relate Apauls. I always gave him a pass on that pic. lol
Big Dan you were a good guy to chat with. RIP friend! As others said he died on a hunting trip....AMEN! Hopefully in his sleep peacefully dreaming about his next hunt. Prayers to the Family!
He's reunited with his son now...
RIP Dan...
He'll be hunting with his son again this fall.
Very sad news. RIP Big Dan
RIP Bigdan. You will be missed my friend. You always treated this flatlander like family.
Prayers for the entire Moore family.
Omg that’s terrible. Dan was a great guy! RIP big dan.
Very sad news! Prayers for his family and friends!
Well the good news from this is there’s a man that will not be forgotten. He left his mark here. I can’t think of any better legacy than to have inspired younger generations and he definitely did that. For those of us that have hit our 70s we know time is short. I’m inspired by the fact he didn’t quit. I know if he were with us he would agree that he would rather die in the field that in some home wasting away. The legacy here is do what you love until you can’t. A life well lived
Sad news.....Prayers sent to his family.
Thanks for being a real American Legend Dan!
Mark
Damn, I met him this year at Pope and Young for the first time. He spent over two hours with me just telling stories. He was very gracious with his time and advice. I'm glad that I at least had the opportunity to buy him a drink once.
Very sad to hear.....I talked to Dan a few times and exchanged some stories as we hunted some of the same areas but I only met him in person once. I had just won a bow fishing tournament and he was the first guy to come and congratulate me. He didn't try to sugarcoat anything he said and was more than willing to share his opinions and advice. He'd been bow hunting long before most of us ever thought about it. He loved the Missouri breaks and elk hunting anywhere. I was told he was a great shot even back in the 1970's when most weren't. I'm grateful I was able to shake his hand.
Very sad. I didn’t know Dan but always enjoyed his posts. God bless.
He loved the arrow and fellow bow hunters. RIP
Sad news, certainly not what I expected to see when logging on this morning. Prayers sent for his family and friends. Dan helped out many on here and he will be missed.
RIP Dan! Hate to hear this yet am thankful he was doing what he loved still at the end. He will be missed by many!
Sad news . He was a hell of a good man and always willing to help out . Hope the bulls are screaming in heaven for you Danny. RIP . Hunt
RIP BigDan we'll all miss you!
Elk are celebrating everywhere. Everyone else is heartbroken. RIP Big Dan, and prayers for his family.
Dan never held back, we served together on the MBA Board for a few years
Sad to hear of Dan’s passing. Prayers sent for his family.
Damn I hate reading this. The guy was a legend and we’ll all miss his humor and knowledge. At very least he passed doing what he loved.
RIP Dan prayers for his family!
This is one photo that I always remember... Cody and Dan after the kill. Love this one. I remember talking with him at P&Y/Dallas shortly after Cody's sudden passing. His eyes started welling up and so did mine. He sure loved that boy.
A legend! He’s with his son now! Tragic but at the same time he passed away out hunting!
A legend and a great guy!
RIP Dan! Thoughts to his wife.
RIP Big Dan. Payers for his wife, family and friends.
So sorry to this about BigDan. We talked a couple times on here when we realized that both our our names were Dan Moore. God Speed brother.
RIP brother! A good guy! Open his door for you or tell you his spots he was always willing to help.
So sad-loved reading his stuff. Legend in the hunting community.
RIP Bigdan
Never met him in person, but it sure was easy to admire him from afar. Unbelievable bowhunter accomplishments on elk. Sad news, RIP, and prayers for the grief of those with sorrow, anguish and loss in their hearts. Way better than going out during a long hospital stay, but I can only imagine the sorrow for family.
RIP Dan, Loved reading his wealth of knowledge he shared with all of us here. One thing he said I haven't forgotten: You cant shoot a big one if you keep shooting the little ones. Spoke to him briefly at the P&Y meet and greet in Phx. You will be sorely missed BigDan.
Very sad news, My deepest condolences to the family. I always looked forward to talking with Dan at the P&Y Conventions.
John
That sucks. He will be missed.
So sad and way too soon. Prayers for his family.
Horrible news. Definitely a legend. He’ll be remembered by many. RIP Danny.
Prayers for his family in these difficult times.
He was always a treat to be around at P&Y Conventions. He was always willing to help others.
I always appreciated his forthrightness- he didn’t mince words or opinions. You always knew where he stood on a matter.
His interviews on BS will always be classic references for elk hunting.
He died doing what he loved to do- Bowhunting.
Melanie, I am sorry to hear of Dan's passing. I feel so bad for you and the rest of the family. There should be some comfort in knowing he and Cody are back together again and that he departed doing what he loved most, bowhunting. Rest in peace Big Dan, and God bless you and the Family! The Allard's Kay and Bill.
Dan seemed to be admired by everyone on here and truly a great loss to Bowsite. I believe that every time that I see an elk question on Bowsite l will wonder "what would Dan say as an answer". I know that he changed my thinking on some elk hunting issues regarding things I thought that I knew. His legacy to bowhunters is a huge one. RIP Dan.
Finally got to meet up with Dan on his Arizona elk hunt this past September (after communicating back and forth for years). We were recently talking about getting after it the next time he drew an Arizona tag. God surely broke the mold with that special man ...
Very sad to hear....prayers to the family....RIP Big Dan
A note from his wife, Melanie, on fb....
"The man we loved and laughed and argued with has left us. When none of us had heard from him in a week, I called White Pine Co search & Rescue in NV, where Dan was antelope hunting. While gone surprisingly soon, he went in the way most of us would want to - enjoying the outdoors, then instantly without pain. Service is tentatively August 23rd but I'll send confirmation later . . ."
Godspeed, Dan. Prayers for the family.
This is the last thing I expected to see today. I only knew Dan through the forum, but he seemed like a very good man. I’m glad he went doing what he loved. Prayers and condolences for his friends and family.
P&Y Phoenix sharing elk hunting tips.
Was fortunate to get to sit at his table at the St. Louis P&Y Convention. Only regret was not getting a photo with him. Really nice guy. RIP
This is terrible news. I didn't know Dan well but met him and talked to him at Pope and Young several times. You have to respect a no-nonsense guy who is still willing to share his considerable expertise with anyone who needed it. Rest in peace.
I never met him in person, but I thought the world of Dan. A few years back I drew a good tag in a unit he had previously hunted. Messaged him and we talked several times. Gave me everything he had without knowing me. This world now has a hole in it that will never be filled. My thoughts and prayers with Dan's friends and family.
Knowing Dan, I can tell you I'm sure he's pissed that he missed this years elk season. I'm sure there is still a long going discussion taking place right now, one sided of course!
That's just the way he was.
RIP Dan Moore, we should all be so lucky as to pass doing what we enjoy most.
Bigdan at classroom capacity giving a seminar at Dallas P&Y
I am very sorry to hear this. I never met him but admired him from afar.
I am thinking of him and his family.
Mike
Thats horrible. God speed
RIP BigDan. Never met the guy but enjoyed the opinions here.
The third arrow from the top passed through my antelope in honor of his son who passed shortly before my hunt with BB. I'm confident his name will be adorned on a few arrows this fall.
Such sad news! Prayers for the family!
Sad news! RIP Big Dan. A true bowhunting legend.
I met Dan in 2004 on POW and have considered him a friend for the 15 years since. He was definitely one of a kind and will be missed by many. He helped and impacted many including a lot of folks on this site. I know Melanie takes comfort that Dan passed enjoying the outdoors and without pain. She posted on FB that services are tentatively scheduled for 8/23 and that she would confirm later. I've attached a few pictures representing fun times with him. RIP Bigdan!
My condolences to family and friends...
Oh man. Terrible news. As everyone has stated above, he was a generous man when it came to his knowledge. Sad to hear this.
Too bad he didn't get one more elk season opener. He'll be in all of our minds as the coming seasons fall into place. RIP BIGDAN.
One of the best elk killers to ever walk this earth, IMO. It was nice to have him at our table for Awards night dinner at the last P&Y Convention. Damn, he’ll be missed.
Terrible indeed. I got kicked out of a few options with fires a couple years ago in MT and he helped me look at other options without asking for anything. His info has been invaluable on here for a lot of guys.
Awful news. He will be missed. I'm so glad I was able to spend time with him on a couple of elk hunts, one of his and one of mine, while time allowed. God's speed in getting "checked-in" in time for this year's elk season in heaven!
RIP Big Dan. meet Dan many years ago and just a while back was talking to hjm about his plan for elk this fall.
Some one we all could look up to. And we will now too. RIP.
Tragic, for sure. When we were together in Aprilnhe was so looking forward to getting past the foot issue and hunting this fall. At least he went doing what he loved. RIP, Danny.
Prayers to the family. I met him at the Phoenix P&Y convention, him and I sat and talked for a while about elk. He acted like I was the only guy at the gathering. Such a great guy.
So sorry to hear this. Prayers sent to his family.
Very sad, never met him but had to be a heck of a guy, offered to help me on my sheep hunt this year in Montana.
RIP DAN! He will be missed and he went out doing what he loved. Prayers for the family.
Dan was one of the best. Unique to a fault. Very humble, would share it all. Certainly a poster person for this sport we call hunting. I never had the pleasure of meeting him but his advice helped lots of my clients
He will be missed and his approach to what he loved will be missed even more
Prayers to the family. May your faith and your love ease all of the pain you are now going through
God bless
RIP Dan, lost a legend for sure..............
I personally met Dan at this year's PY convention. That first morning, I walked up and said, " Hi Dan, Paul@the fort". He said, with a smile and his hand out, " I know who you are".
I do believe, Dan knew a l LOT of people and surely showed his respect for them all. Yep, a good guy.
my best, Paul
Dan will be missed dearly. I knew him as an extremely generous and very caring person. He treated by wife like family from the instant they met. He helped her grow as a bow hunter and always seemed to be there when she or I needed his help or knowledge. From hanging out in the shop talking archery and hunting to breakfast at Nickel Charlie's we always enjoyed spending time with Dan.
We truly will miss him. Rest in Peace Dan.
R.I.P Dan I enjoyed hunting with you and Ron and all the stories at your cabin. Thanks for having me out last year.
Sad news indeed. Godspeed Big Dan!!!
Just saw this. Rest In Peace, Dan. I always enjoyed our visits at Pope and Young. I’ll never forget the first time I met him at the P&Y Museum at the 2011 convention. Pretty fitting place to have met Big Dan. The world was definitely a better place with Dan in it.
Wow, sad... RIP BigDan.
Been following BS for a few years now. I'd always stop and read what BigDan had to say. We'll miss him...
I thought it was just a few days ago but Dan called me on 8-5. He was back in town to pick up some food and ice. We talked for maybe a half hour. He was like an excited kid chatting about a good lope and water hole he found. We tried to draw Wy this year and struck out. I tried for a breaks tag and it didn't happen. We were supposed to hunt again next year in Wy. Sad news and I am crushed.
I will talk to Ron at some point. Sad sad news but he was having a blast in Nv with his new camper.
RIP Dan.
This is terrible news. Dan loved this community. In fact the last email I got from him was him bitching about our 3 day shut down in June. That was Dan. No BS. I loved it.
He was undeniably the best elk bowhunter that ever lived. I’m gonna miss him terribly. I was proud to know him and call him a friend. I’m going to be sad not seeing his posts during elk season. My best to Mel and his family.
Big Dan the Legend. Hard to believe. RIP Dan and thanks for sharing so generously during your time here.
I never interacted with Bigdan. But I’ve read countless posts of his and was impressed with his knowledge of elk hunting. Rest In Peace.
RIP Dan . Really sad news for the bowhunting community and his friends and family. Keep bowhunting in heaven ! Prayers sent ????
Never had the privilege of meeting or talking to Dan. I can tell you this, he participated and read alot on here and was willing to help ANYBODY out. Dan sent me a few PM's after reading a few of my posts and I was very grateful he took the time. Very grateful.
RIP BigDan >>>--------------->'s
One guy I would have loved to have met in person, really enjoyed his posts and the interviews. Very sad news but we should all be so lucky to go doing what we love. Godspeed Dan.
So sorry to hear I got to meet Dan in St. Louis and he was very kind to me, just as was Dwight Schuh. Prayers to the family.
First, the bad news....What a loss to the bowhunting community. There will never be another.....In this age of political correctness, you never had to guess what was on Dan's mind, and he was never going to sugar coat it. Now, the good news....He went out doing what he loved, and is currently sitting at a camp fire with his son, Cody. I wonder how many Hoochie Mama's bit the dust because of him....LOL
Melanie, I offer my heartfelt condolences. Rest in peace, Dan Moore.
RIP BigDan! This makes the 3rd class act bowhuter in the last year that I know of that passed away doing what he loved. Subtle reminder that our time here is short. Prayers for his family.
Sad news, RIP Dan, always enjoyed reading his posts also..
Started typing this morning, looked and suddenly had a half page..... but not the time nor place.
RIP Danny. Hugs and prayers for Melanie, you're in our hearts. Such a sweetheart, together they were a perfect team, the sugar in a salt cure.....
I know he had his health issues, the thing with his feet sucked. Messaged him a while ago and the conversation turned to how a man, a bowhunter, wants to go out. We both agreed..... on the mountain.... or rather, out doing what we loved. Not in a hospital bed hooked up to hoses and drugs and God knows what. With 'your boots on" so to speak.
Once again.... seems he did things by his own terms. God bless Danny. RIP. Don't kill all the 400 bulls before the rest of us get there.....
I didn't know Dan personally, but that video of him pulling the diaphragm call out of his buddy's mouth was all-time classic, I've learned a lot from his stuff, he will be missed for sure!
Rest In Peace Bigdan. As evidenced from everyone’s comments we lost a class act. You live on in all the good you did for others. Thank you. We will miss you.
RIP Big Dan, you will be missed!
Wow, I was very sad to hear Dan passed. I never met him but always appreciated his shared knowledge and candor. A real elk hunting icon for sure. Enjoying what he loved to do right up to the end was fitting. He will be missed! Rip Dan.
He was a staple here for years and years.. a great advocate for bow hunting. He will he missed for sure..
RIP Dan. What a Bowsite staple, he will certainly be missed.
Dan was one of my oldest bowsite memories from back in the day when bowsite had a chat room. He maybe gone but he'll never be forgotten. RIP Dan.
RIP Dan, just before the season too, fuk!
What a shocker, RIP Dan!!
Prayers to the family
Damn..... RIP Dan. Never met you, but wish I had....
Sad...Prayers to the family.
I never met Dan, but I sure as hell wish I had. A good man, a family man, and a friend to many on this site.
Well done, Bigdan. >>>————>
Terrible news to hear! RIP Dan and prayers for your family.
When its my time to depart this planet thats how I want to go. In my sleeping bag after a glorious day spent hunting. R I P Dan.
RIP Big Dan. Prayers to your family.
RIP BD! Prayers for your family.
I'm just sick to hear about this.
I've been up in Dubois Wyoming on another one of my Scouting trips for fellow bowsiters and I got a couple text last night before I left to come back here home.
I was talking with Danny to his Antelope hunt about campsites as he was the Antelope tag holder in my Nv. 111-113 thread in July.
I am just devastated to about this.
Prayers from my home to his loving family,
Robb
Rest in peace Big Dan. A true legend among elk bow hunters as well as bow hunters in general.
RIP Dan. Never met him but always enjoyed his thoughts and contributions he shared with Bowsite.
So sad to hear the news. RickM and I hunted the breaks in 2017 and Dan opened up his home to us. Great memories on that hunt. We got to help Ron (Dan's brother) kill his first elk with a bow and it was a beauty. I scored early and got to spend time with Dan on the river hanging a stand for him in the willows. Rest in peace my friend. DJ
Positive energy goes out to his family and friends. Very sorry to hear. RIP! Will
So sad to hear this! But if you gotta go......that's the way to do it. RIP
Two bow hunters that impacted my hunting life the most are now gone. Monty Moravec, and now BigDan. I can't believe almost forty years have passed since I first walked into his shop. Countless hours shooting with him, hunting POW with him and just talking with him are now just memories. Two friends gone now but never forgotten. Dang Dan....I can't believe you're gone.
Go rest high on that mountain....RIP Big Dan
Prayers for the family
Never met Big Dan, wish I would have... Enjoyed reading his comments...RIP, Dan.....
That’s gotta stink.....RIP.
So sad.... what a great guy. He always treated me like a good buddy. RIP Big Dan
Sorry to see that. I’ll keep his family in my prayers.
Lee
RIP.......Prayers for the family.
Terrible news. I loved his stories, spelling/grammar and the interview is great, definitely listen if you haven't already. It happens to everyone eventually and he's blessed it wasn't in a hospital, hospice or something like that, but out actually living. Condolences to the family.
RIP Dan. You went out how I want to. Save one or two of the dumb ones for me...
Sorry for y’all’s loss! Prayers!
Damnit. Danny was one of the few Bowsiters I have had the pleasure to have a face-to-face conversation with. If you wanted to talk bowhunting, particularly bowhunting elk, Dan was all in. RIP Dan. You and Cody can get in a lot more hunting time now!
If there ever was an elk whisperer, he taught em...RIP Dan
RIP Big Dan and Godspeed!
Condolences go out to his family and friends. RIP BigDan
Just got back into cell service last night.
Very sorry to see this.
Condolences to the family.
He’ll be missed. Even by people who never met him.
blessings for Dan and Family
God rest him and good hunting for the next life. RIP
I spent a month in Alaska with Danny. You get to know a fella pretty good when you are cooped up with them for that long.
Danny was a shoot from the hip sort of guy for sure. But he never said anything (outside of a joke now and then) that he couldn't back up.
I could go on and on but time is so limited here and I know Danny is in a better place scouting things out for our next big adventure together. Rest well my friend!
Melanie, my prayers and condolences are with you.
I was probably on POW hunting one of his favorite areas when he passed. I guess he was too busy telling hunting stories to St. Peter to bother with pushing a big buck my way.
Rest in peace Big Dan. There will never be another like him.
Sorry to hear this. Prayers for the family.
There might be a handful of Whitetail Bowhunting legends. But BIGDAN was truly thee legend of all Elk Bowhunters !!! His archery accomplishments are nothing but impressive. RIP BigDan....
Definitely a Bowsite Legend and great guy! Never had the pleasure of meeting him, but shared a few PM’s.
Prayers from PA to his friends and family!
Sorry to hear. Rest In Peace. From what I read and heard, an awesome hunter. Shoot straight.
I've been out of the loop the last week and just got on to see this.
Really sucks. RIP Big Dan.
Tears! Always read his posts knowing I was going to be learning something. He will be missed!
So very sorry to hear of Dan's passing. My heart felt condolences to his family and friends as well as his friends in the Bowsite community. We lost a great one :( Rest in Peace Danny Moore
Really sorry to hear this. Dan seemed like a heck of a character and one hell of a bowhunter. I wish I'd had an opportunity to meet him. RIP Dan.
Thats a rough loss....Prayers for Mrs. Moore and the family. I feel doubly fortunate to have met him and chatted at PY in Omaha in April. All he talked about was going to the airport to pick up his wife. Devoted.
If this is your first visit to Bowsite, the length of this thread and the number of members who have offered personal stories and condolences , gives you a measure of the man, Danny Moore, and what he meant to all of us. He was our touch-stone! He helped us all whether directly in person, by phoncons, in PM's or by posting and sharing his undisputable elk knowledge. He personally helped me several times over the years. He made Bowsite a better place. I miss you already BIGDAN!
RIP BIGDAN, enjoyed your posts over the years!!

This thread was hard to see. Gone way too soon, but at least he can hunt this season with Cody. Only got to meet Dan a couple of times. I was really young and had no idea who he was, but he helped me set up my first hand me down bow and helped get me into archery. Wished I could have had the chance to BS with him some more! Can't say enough good things about him. RIP BigDan
I just got home from a couple of weeks off grid. Sad news. Thoughts for Melanie and family. I'll just leave this - Dan went out doing what he loved and he is getting time with his son again. A guy can't ask for much more than that. RIP Dan.
I'm sorry to hear it. Always liked his posts
RIP Big Dan...You will be greatly missed..
Big Dan and Maggie !!
Big Dan and Maggie !!
It’s great to see and read so many positive post about Big Dan ! . Big Dan touched so many in the bowhunting world , Dan was always willing to help other bow hunters . Herman Kovar introduced me to Big Dan while I was hunting in Illinois back in 2005. I consider myself lucky to call Big Dan a friend. I spent A entire elk season with Dan chasing elk in the Wyoming mountains, I have so many great memories from our hunt together. Nobody can tell a story like Big Dan . Every evening our camp was filled with other hunters looking to talk with Big Dan. So many great Memories from that sept! ! Dan was filled with knowledge ! Big Dan had the ability to find some great hunting spots, and Dan shared many of these spots with others. Dan loved his Wife his kids, his family Dan also had a passion for Pope and Young. And a love for Bowsite. May God comfort Danny Moore's loved ones!
Damnit, these threads are the worst. I didn't have the privilege of knowing Dan at all personally, wish I did. But I really admired what I knew of him from years here. He was definitely one of the all time legends at killing huge elk.
Anyone else, keep coming back to this and just saying...Damn! Still hard to believe, but as some have said, he went out doing what he loved...

Dan Moore was born March 13, 1948 in So. California. He became friends through archery with Gerald (Jerry) Burns, now Sparks, NV. and Ron Hawk (now decease). When Jerry moved to NV we became friends through archery. Ron would put hunts together on Santa Cruz Island for Merino sheep and pigs and Catalina Island for goats. That's when I meet Dan and became friends. Dan invited us to come to MT to hunt elk. My hunting partner, Rick Panelli, and Jerry's hunting partner, Gordon Nicholson, took him up on it. Big John Blankenship, Oregon, joined us. We hunted elk for a week near Lima, MT with Gordon and myself tagging our first elk. Dan suggest we go hunt Whitetails for a couple days. We drove across MT to Ennis, MT where Rick was the only one to tag a Whitetail. We drove back across the state were Dan tagged his elk. We had a great time and shared a lot of laughs.

Dan and Cody in camp after the morning hunt
I don't remember what year this was but I think Cody was around twelve. Dan and I had been to Prince of Wales island several time hunting black bear. We decided to hunt Sitka Black tail deer and take Cody. It seems like it was in August before to school year started. Cody shot his first Sitka Black tail.

Here's another photo with the crew and my 1987 NV buck. Great time for all. Note the super duper camo we had back then. Dan and I have our Big Sky Archery hats on. Just under the logo it say Kalispell, MT and Coeur' d Alene, ID were Dan had a second shop for a few years.
My two best buddies in elk camp
My two best buddies in elk camp
After a few years of packing elk meat, I found out Dan had been holding out on me. Dan's family had riding stables in So. California. The family moved to Lone Pine, CA. where they bought a ranch to grow hay for the stables. Dan had a lot of knowledge about horses and packing. These guys became my best friends in elk camp. Irishman PM'd me about the hunting with Dan in the Big Hole area. We camped at Sheep Creek. Every now and again the horses would take off and we would hunt horse instead of elk.

My good friend, Ralph Albright, (Reno, NV) started hunting elk with us in the Big Hole. Here's a photo of Ralph and Dan with an elk Dan shot ready to head back to the truck. Melanie was on this hunt with us on this hunt.

Anyone have a postal address to send a card to Dan’s family?
What a bummer to see. I was in the sticks when this happened and just opened it now. I'm one of the many that learned a thing or two about elk hunting and calling from Dan and one of the many great things about the P&Y conventions were seeing him and hearing his advice and countless hunting stories.
RIP sir. You'll be missed.
