A total gift. Sitting in my stand hunting for whitetails, and a group of 6 muleys walks by. I just do happen to have a muley doe tag for this unit, but in the many years I’ve hunted this property I have never seen a muley in this field. Even the land owner was surprised. Got both hunts on film as well! I think I’ve been bit with the trad bow bug!

Leftover tag, New Unit to me, Solo, DIY, Timberline buck down!!!
This was the most fun I’ve ever had chasing Muleys. Got the tag in the leftover draw, this is a new unit for me that I never stepped foot in before this year. I scouted before the season as much as I could and would like to thank Oake and Loggerchas for there intel and suggestions of where to look within the unit. I’d also like to add that this solo DIY trip was also my first timberline hunt (wasn’t really intended to be but you go where you see the animals). I patterned this buck with 8 others for 2 days and made a plan. Only through the grace of God and a little luck did it all come together. Unfortunately I made a less than perfect shot that required a lengthy track job but with some persistence and some help from my new friend Erick from Wisconsin was able to recover the buck.

In a spot I've hunted for many years, the owner put cattle in fairly early this fall. This moved most of the deer on to adjacent properties. But, with a little cold weather I know of a place, on that property, the deer sometimes like to go and the cattle don't. Two weeks ago I hunted an evening and spotted a number of Mulies on the neighbors. I guessed they might go into the thicker area, where I can hunt, to bed on occasion. Two days later, before first light, I set up a treestand in a spot I have never hunted before, guessing how the deer might access it. But, with Mulies on this property, you never know. Sometimes they are there, sometimes they aren't and I've never seen them go through that spot before. But, unless you are watching that little area, you can't see into it. An hour after light, with glimpses of cattle moving around open pasture around the timber piece I was in, I spotted a deer. Turned out to be a herd of 10, or so, that moved into my patch of woods and actually filtered through right where I guessed they might. At the back was a big bodied buck with tall, dark and heavy antlers. At 30 yards I bleated to stop him and made a perfect shot. 80 yards later he fell over. What a fantastic experience! He is not a real big buck, and I have taken bigger, but he looked terrific as he came closer through the timber. Having it all work out by figuring out how they might move and setting up in a brand new spot, was really rewarding. Couldn't have asked for better.

Thanks, Jeff! Yeah, he was quartering toward me a little but at 15 yards I knew I could drive the Iron Will through there. Double lung passthrough and he only went about 80 yards on a dead run. Need to go back in the am and find the arrow.

Thanks, Frank. There were bigger bucks around, but my freezer hadn't had any venison in it for a few years, and I had a mighty itchy trigger finger.

I've had some badly rutted up venison from past bucks that I've killed during breeding season, but this guy still had some fat on him, so I was hopeful the meat was edible. I just ate a chunk of his tenderloins wrapped in bacon tonight, and it was delicious!! I'm pleased.
