Zach Welch semi-live antelope
My son Zach had an antelope trip to Wyoming planned but once the dates had to be changed he had a dilemma. He was to be in Omaha for his white coat ceremony that day. I told him I would be there for the his white coat and his mom could return home and I would go with him to help with the 9 1/2 hour drive to camp when it was over. We had a plan and we were pumped.
We made it through the ceremony, took some pics and we hit the road. We hit one major rain storm on the way but when we arrived at camp our buddies were sleeping under the stars on dry ground. We crashed for a couple of hours and made it to our waterhole and setup the blind before first light.
This his going to be awesome! Has to be a proud dad moment Beav. Huge congrats to your son, and to his parents!
We were hoping to have enough service for a live hunt but it wasn’t possible with barely enough to send out a text. As the sun started to paint the water in front of us we were pumped for the day. Although our friends didn’t kill anything yesterday, today was supposed to be near 90 degrees and we felt our chances were good.
I got a text ;) . This is going to be good!!
Darn.....he looks like 16......doogey howser? Congrats and best of luck!!!!
Got that text. Was there ever any doubt? Congrats again boys!
I didn’t get that text! Ugh, to be cool enough some day...
Thx for blowing up the thread Will. LOL
Not long after sunrise, a few goats popped over the horizon. A closer look through the binos revealed a nice buck with 3 does.
We sat there in the blind and we were able to watch the buck and his does as they bedded 300 yards from us. About 10:30 Zach pulls up his binoculars and says there’s another buck coming over that hill!
As soon as the herd buck saw the intruder he stood to his feet and marched towards the other buck. A March turned into an all out sprint and when he got within 30 yards buck #2 bolted. The herd buck stood there victorious but the other buck soon grazed back towards him and they fed together for 20 minutes. Soon the herd buck returned to his does while buck 2 bedded at 300 yards from our blind.
What blind you guys hunting out of? Hunt
A good friend gave it to us HUNT. You may know him
A good friend gave it to us HUNT. You may know him
The herd buck returned to his does and bedded 220 yards from the blind. We now had 2 bucks bedded within sight and felt it was a matter of time before one of them committed the water.
At 11:30 buck #2 stood and stretched and soon after so did one of the herd buck’s does. Zach says “I think that doe is coming.” Sure enough she makes a beeline and the herd buck stands and starts to follow. Soon the doe is at 43 yards at the end of the pond and the buck is headed towards her.
As he reaches the water I give Zach the range at 43 yards slightly quartering too. I lean back to give Zach room to shoot and can’t see the shot but I hear it hit and it sounds solid!
Zach says “it looked good!” I see the buck just as he clears the rise near the pond and he has a lot of blood on his side. We exit the blind and peak over the ridge and there lays the buck not 60 yards. We smile and hug and walk up to admire him. We take a couple of pics and we both have big smiles!
This buck’s beautiful cape had some unique markings!
After I completed the Super Tag last year, a good friend had this knife made for me. It was great to be able to use this knife on my first hunt of the season.
Me and my old man soaking it all in. Changing into shorts, and it’s butcher time!
We made quick work of the buck and got the meat cooled as soon as possible. It was time to head to town to get some Makers for the evening in hopes the other guys had some luck!
Nicely done guys. my best, Paul
Congrats on the ceremony, a great hunt and unforgettable times with Dad.
Saaweeet! Cool buck Zach! Congrats!
I like hanging him from the steps in the oil yard.
Congratulations on both achievements! I was on a hunt, with a once in a lifetime tag, this year when my son's Hooding Ceremony took place. With only three days left in the season, I drove 700 miles in order to attend it and then drive back to complete the last few days of my hunt. Absolutely worth it even though I saw nothing in those three days!! Pharmacy schools just seem to know when to schedule these things, don't they!?
Yes they do StickFlicker! He is going into Physical Therapy school. Would gladly do it 10 times over though.
Marks in the cape possibly from running under fences? Also congrats to sun and dad!
Congrats to both of you. Beav, they never get too old for some quality father/son time, do they!
Very nice job on the hunt and congrats on the “white coat”. Quite an achievement and what a way to celebrate.
Busch light photo is a framer. Love it boys!!
Makers and dad shit right up my alley
We need a LIKE button.........
Way to go boys, congrats on all accounts Zach!
Great stuff!!!! Congrats!
As a UNMC grad, I gotta say congrats. As a “pronghorn-is-my-favorite-game-animal” guy, I gotta say welcome to the club. Well, I guess welcome to both clubs.
Awesome job, Zach! At school and in the field! Off to another spectacular start to hunting season!
Gotta be one proud Dad there... Congratulations to the Beav and Mom for raising such a great young man!
Nice work Zac and Harlin! Looks like you made a perfect shot.
Thanks for the post!!
Our other two friends haven’t had any luck yet. Couple of close calls but no dice! Last night we had makers along with the last package of elk steaks from Zach’s bull and our buddy brought mountain lion. Great meal and great times!
Great job, Zach! You may never top last year's achievement, but you're still getting it done. Good luck with the deer hunt!
Way to go all the away around!!!
Great share. Congrats on the ceremony....Both of 'em!
Dude's a stone cold killer. Congrats Zach on both the buck and the white coat. Have a Busch Latte on me!
Thanks for passing it on, Harlin.
Nice job, fellas! Congrats
Way to go fellas! Does he ever miss?! Dang gotta watch out for that guy! Instant death sentence when he draws back.
Great job Zach and Harlin! Hope Zach has little lime to make it home for some deer hunting this year.
Congrats on School, and the buck!
Harlin congrats on raising an outstanding young man
Dr Zach congrats on all your studying paying off keep up the hard work. The goat is just extra the icing on the cake. Enjoy.
I like a thread where people aren't bitching. Well done, fellas!
Pic of our camp. Ended up with Zach killing the only antelope in camp. He ate the tenderloins last night and said they were awesome.
Didn't expect anything less! His luck continues! Well done men. P.S. I really enjoy getting that text too!!
Thanks for sharing your awesome hunt.
Gotta improvise to find a place to hang an antelope in WY ! :-)
Congrats to both of you !
Awesome & congrats. I am headed out with my adult son mid Sept. His 1st trip for Goats. Nice Buck your son took & apparently a great shooter too. My hunts are always great when one of my kids or G-kids are with.
Great Job, Gentlemen!
Congrats to Zach on both accounts!
