My son Zach had an antelope trip to Wyoming planned but once the dates had to be changed he had a dilemma. He was to be in Omaha for his white coat ceremony that day. I told him I would be there for the his white coat and his mom could return home and I would go with him to help with the 9 1/2 hour drive to camp when it was over. We had a plan and we were pumped.

We made it through the ceremony, took some pics and we hit the road. We hit one major rain storm on the way but when we arrived at camp our buddies were sleeping under the stars on dry ground. We crashed for a couple of hours and made it to our waterhole and setup the blind before first light.

We were hoping to have enough service for a live hunt but it wasn’t possible with barely enough to send out a text. As the sun started to paint the water in front of us we were pumped for the day. Although our friends didn’t kill anything yesterday, today was supposed to be near 90 degrees and we felt our chances were good.

Not long after sunrise, a few goats popped over the horizon. A closer look through the binos revealed a nice buck with 3 does.

We sat there in the blind and we were able to watch the buck and his does as they bedded 300 yards from us. About 10:30 Zach pulls up his binoculars and says there’s another buck coming over that hill!

As soon as the herd buck saw the intruder he stood to his feet and marched towards the other buck. A March turned into an all out sprint and when he got within 30 yards buck #2 bolted. The herd buck stood there victorious but the other buck soon grazed back towards him and they fed together for 20 minutes. Soon the herd buck returned to his does while buck 2 bedded at 300 yards from our blind.

The herd buck returned to his does and bedded 220 yards from the blind. We now had 2 bucks bedded within sight and felt it was a matter of time before one of them committed the water.

At 11:30 buck #2 stood and stretched and soon after so did one of the herd buck’s does. Zach says “I think that doe is coming.” Sure enough she makes a beeline and the herd buck stands and starts to follow. Soon the doe is at 43 yards at the end of the pond and the buck is headed towards her.

As he reaches the water I give Zach the range at 43 yards slightly quartering too. I lean back to give Zach room to shoot and can’t see the shot but I hear it hit and it sounds solid!

Zach says “it looked good!” I see the buck just as he clears the rise near the pond and he has a lot of blood on his side. We exit the blind and peak over the ridge and there lays the buck not 60 yards. We smile and hug and walk up to admire him. We take a couple of pics and we both have big smiles!

Congratulations on both achievements! I was on a hunt, with a once in a lifetime tag, this year when my son's Hooding Ceremony took place. With only three days left in the season, I drove 700 miles in order to attend it and then drive back to complete the last few days of my hunt. Absolutely worth it even though I saw nothing in those three days!! Pharmacy schools just seem to know when to schedule these things, don't they!?

Yes they do StickFlicker! He is going into Physical Therapy school. Would gladly do it 10 times over though.
