Around here the head on Timothy is 1 1/2 - 2". That head is really long but, maybe in your area it is that long. It had a smooth head until it matures then opens up like you are showing. It was a preferred horse grazing and hay years ago when I was young.

Fresh baled Timothy is one of the best smells I can remember as a kid. Never seen it with heads like that, though!

Not Timothy. I sell truckloads of timothy every week. I tried matching the image in search with no luck.

GF,

Your photo near the rock wall looks like it could be Japanese Stilt Grass. If so, that is an invasive exotic. Difficult to be rid of... Deer do not utilize it.

Pete for the win! One of the CT guys works for our DEEP/DOW/DNR and identified it as stiltgrass as well.

That Japanese stilt grass is a huge pita. I’ve had a lingering infestation around my house. Started to get some at our farm this year too. Probably followed the equipment from place to place. I’d burn it down with glyphosate and get rid of it now. Nothing eats it.

Both of those are not what I got

100% NOT timothy. 100% DEFINITELY stilt grass. Its evil.
