Spent opening weekend helping a friend's son and girlfriend who are newbies . We were in 5Bs. It was slow with little calling first few days and 88 degrees on the opener! It will start kicking in soon, hopefully with the next storm front coming this weekend.

AZ-Rich, How is the smoke from the control burn over there? I was in 6A helping my nephew and could see it across FH3. You're right, it was hot Friday but the storm cooled things off Saturday.

We were into elk right in the thick of that fire’s smoke. It was surprising that the remained in there routine areas despite it. I had to wear a wetted bandana as face mask just to breath in it! IMO, the Forest Svc was pretty pathetic for not putting that out before all the elk hunters arrived. It would have been a simple mob up job from what saw.
My friend just arrowed a 386 bull in unit 10! It’s a real toad.

Chuckster, I did not really notice the smoke all day, but my eyes burnt like crazy all day. I thought it was allergies. Towards evening you could see the smoke a little. After Wed. all was fine.
Very little bulging. We ran in to several batchelor groups of bulls. Never saw a cow. Dave

Weather guys are calling for heavy rain Sunday thru next week. Apparently the models show a low pressure system diving down Cali that will pull up moisture from Hurricane Lorena. Too far out to be a guarantee, but something to keep an eye on.

Thanks DP. A few years ago the FS started a controlled burn in our #1 hunting spot. I was ticked however the elk stayed around the burn and smoke. Almost killed a nice bull in the burn area. His antlers were jet black from scraping the burnt trees with white tips on each point. Good luck up there.

Rain and cooler weather should hopefully get them going more than the first 1.5 hours if the day up around Flagstaff.

AZ-Rich, Congrats to your buddys son. Fine looking set of antlers. I noticed the blood on the antlers. Just a heads up, it will stain if not removed soon.

Just got back, what a funky week of weather and elk.
My bowsite bud didn't harvest but he had a blast.
Nice bulls you guys!
I've only hunted 3 days this year on my own tags although I've helped out on 3 other hunts/states. The Utah Youth draw Any Bull was the most fun with the dad and his 16 year old daughter. Leaving again next week but on 1 of my elk tags, I'm excited.
Good luck, Robb
