new mexico unit 50 elk rifle

Taking my 76 year old dad on a unit 50 new mexico rifle elk hunt October 5. Know its a tough unit but all we could get on our budget and hes always wanted to kill an elk. I am leaning toward hunting south to avoid numbers of people. He's in decent shape and can comfortably shoot 500-600 yards, Any thoughts on where to start other than south area west of ojo.
