Nice quality vid of a Utah muley hunt posted a couple of days ago. I could not have done this, but the hunter makes a 94/95 yard shot. He didn't get good penetration but it worked. Go full screen to see the better details.

That was super, super cool. I'm super excited for him.

Ok. I'm going to be honest. The guy seems like a cool dude. He made a dandy shot. I found the video a bit off though. I did not need the dramatic music and slow motion portrayal of the hunt. He's on a private ranch for Pete's sake. No need Implying it was some kind of epic battle being fought getting to and killing that deer. And, I certainty didn't need all the butt shots and wedgies the camera person repeatedly made a point to capture

No reason to take a shot like that but nobody can know if it was lucky or not lucky without knowing how what his success rate is.

A nfl kicker who makes 3 of 20 field goals over 50 may be considered lucky when he hits his fourth on his 21st try. Another guy who hit 17 of 20 would not be called lucky to makes his 18th on his 21st try. His past would have set up the expectation that he would be successful on the next try. It is all about context and sample size.

If something is consistently and predictably done it is not luck. We have no idea how consistently this guy does this.

Still not a good shot to take on a living thing but maybe he is proficient at ranges others can only dream of.

Glad he killed that buck. But I thought. And one of the reasons I started bow hunting was to see how close I could get to take big game. Hundred yard shot should not be attempted. To much cage wrong and the loss of the animal. You want to make those shots pick up a rifle.

"he must be capable of making this all the time. he said on shots like that he always holds 1 yard low. it was no fluke. they guy has mastered his game and has options due to his skill that most of us never will".

He might have some skills with his shooting but not a very skilled BOW hunter if he can't get a lot closer. "Pathetic" sums it up.

Just curious though, where should the line be drawn, and does it vary by species? For me, it is around 25 yards on most species with my selfbow.

75+ yards or meters shot should be taken only in archery competitions at unmovable targets. 94/95 yards shot was a poor decision dictated by lack of common sense, humbleness, respect for life. Unfortunately the ethic component in hunting is not strong with this "hunter". The entire video reeks of entitlement, showoff, and total disrespect towards the entire hunting community.

From: 2 Points
06-Oct-19
This guy was lucky. The arrow penetrated like 3", then he was able to watch it run away because of the country he was in. I would rather of seen him stalk closer and blow it than watch a long distance shot, just because he doesn't know how to get close.

From: greg simon

“My site is f’ed up so I’m going to cut loose a crazy long shot” Things that make you say hmmmm!

That final slow mo wedgie shot really capped off the experience:/

06-Oct-19
deerslayer, Wyoming has been extremely liberal on what is, or is not, legal equipment during archery season. Earlier this year, the G&F dep’t recommended to the game commission that crossbows should no longer be allowed during archery season. Their justification was that crossbows “are capable of making 100yd shots.” The commission declined to act on the recommendation at this time.

So yes, those in position to make changes are beginning to pay attention.

I watched a video of this couple hunting in Africa. She shot a Waterbuck at 53 yards and he shot a Cape Buffalo at 47 yards and then proceeded to empty his quiver on it at 60 yards.

I’ve known Josh for quite a few years. I’m not condoning this shot in any way but he puts more time into shooting his bow than anyone I’ve ever met. He builds and rebuilds his arrows until everything is perfect. He practices longer shots on a daily basis. He is good friends with Tim Wells who is a pretty good shot as well. His wife Sarah is also a great shot and could probably bench press more than most dudes on here, lol. He told me years ago that his goal was to be able to get paid to hunt. His wife and him were both marketing majors in college I believe and they have marketed themselves through social media so well that they make a fortune and are able to do pretty much whatever they want. Him and his wife are both very nice and do a lot for others. No matter what he will always have haters but that just drives him to keep going. He really is a good dude.

The word haters is not apropos here. Just because you disagree with 100 yard shots does not make you a hater. Neither does it make you jealous. It simply means that you disapprove of the methods and are aware that too many things can happen between the human brain’s signal to release the arrow and the actual impact of same. Yes, it’s a helluva shot, but one that could have produced very different results that would never have made it to YouTube.

I posted this recently, but hey, here we go again....

Just as a frame of reference....

This is a 65 or 70 yard shot with one of my stickbows (NFAA marked course, so no guessing, just don’t remember exactly).

Listen for the hang time and think about how far a deer can move in that amount of time. Even if it hadn’t decided to until after the shot was on its way.

Figure his bow is 50% faster than mine and less than 50% longer range. So hang time is in the same ballpark.

I would not call it an ethical shot. But this also is not Midwest whitetail hunting either. It is fairly common out there to take a 50 yard shot. Mulies act far differently than whitetails. That being said, 95 Is way to far to shoot at a living animal. Do people take those shot, Yes. Be it with compound or crossbow there are unethical people out there. The problem with crossbow forums is that the bench targets shooters intermix with bowhunters. Some do not understand the difference between hitting paper and hitting a deer at those long distances.

From: PECO

"Still not a good shot to take on a living thing but maybe he is proficient at ranges others can only dream of." No one gives a shit how "proficient" he is with his bow at 100 yards. We care about how "proficient" the live animal is when being shot at, at 95 yards.

"He told me years ago that his goal was to be able to get paid to hunt. His wife and him were both marketing majors in college I believe and they have marketed themselves through social media"

Awesome!! So bowhunting is reduced to "likes" and those that follow social media influencers. Just more from the "look at me" generation. Not sure what disgusts me more, the narcissistic social media influencer pimps, or the cult like followers.

Went to his YouTube channel. Plenty of comments, he deletes the negative ones. Part of his justification is that animals are wounded at any distance so.... And while there is truth in that, I would suspect the chance of wounding an animal at distance rises exponentially as distance increases. Doesn't matter how perfect your arrows are, how much paper you punch, there are variables that are beyond are control, errant wind, unseen obstruction.....Yeah, all those things can happen at 50 yards as well. They just get magnified the further out you go. Like Ian Malcolm said in the movie Jurassic Park. "You were so occupied thinking if you could, and not thinking about if you should." When videos like these are used to support the shortening of archery seasons, future generations will thank you and your "social media influencing" as will past generations that fought hard for the longer seasons.

^Scoot....contrary to what you "think" you know or want to believe, I posted the vid because in my view it was a good muley video showing a successful hunt. As the title said, I thought it was a heck of a shot....nothing more than that. Just because one doesn't like it or how he did it doesn't mean others won't find it interesting. It's posted with the same intent as the elk video I posted a couple of weeks ago. Are we now to the point here where folks can't like, talk about or show hunts with shots over say 50 or 60 yards....or maybe hunts using 40-45lb draw weight.....or maybe hunts using mechanicals.....or maybe hunts with e-bikes...or maybe hunts over bait or bait plots, etc?? I hope we are not at that point where certain hunting topics/vids are not allowed to be shown, discussed or enjoyed because someone else's selective outrage chip kicks in and they don't agree with it.

From: Ambush

At the point where his sight is "frozen", he should have quit. He had to use Crazy Glue to fix a problem with the sight the night before and it glued the slider. With all the torquing he was doing it could easily have been put out of wack. Doesn't take much misalignment to be off a foot at that range.

Go back to camp, fix the sight, shoot it in to verify, then go back to hunting. The deer were not pressured and another opportunity would have come up.

To me at least, this was anything but a quality hunt. It was a meager stalk and hail mary. He could have belly crawled up to within 40 - 500 yds of those deer in that sage and waited until they were not paying attention, then slowly rise to take a 'sure' shot. This to me was not what bowhunting is intended for. Even if he is a 'good guy'.

"I hope we are not at that point where certain hunting topics/vids are not allowed to be shown, discussed or enjoyed because someone else's selective outrage chip kicks in and they don't agree with it."

It IS being discussed. The fact that everyone is not posting with orgasmatic glee seems to be your issue. Seems as long as it's fan boy cult worship it's all good. Any criticism, well, haters gonna hate. Right? Wrong. As I stated when bowhunting is reduced to "likes" and "follows" on social media someone has lost what being a bowhunter is. And being a bowhunter is different things to different people, but I'm pretty sure "Likes" and "follows" isn't (or shouldn't) be one of them.

I think 90% here are in agreement, not much more to be said. But that's because most here are of the mindset that we'd be embarrassed about taking that long a shot because we pride ourselves in getting close. The video-maker sees it as a bragging point and puts it in the title of the video. So right away we're at odds. It just goes from there.

It's kind of like bragging about your tracking skills after you shoot animals in the guts. Make a video titled "3 MILE gut shot TRACK JOB!!"

Bow....I was responding to Scoot's false assumption. WRT to that guy in the vid...I don't know him nor the guy in the elk vid I posted. I agree folks will view things based on how they do it or know it....and if they choose to discuss it either way, that's fine. My view is when you complain about someone else's ways because "it's not the way I do it"...that becomes a slippery slope, especially for hunting in general.

That raises the question....what's worse for hunting...the person who hunts a certain way (long shots, mechanicals, e-bikes, bait plots, etc) or the other hunters who dislikes how that hunter does it? Hunters can be their own worst enemy....especially on social media.

I don't know too many folks who allow likes and dislikes to define what they do other than some folks are seeking attention for profit or maybe promotion.

THAT is not the issue. I fully understand that western hunting may require longer shots. I get it. There come's a point where it's more pride and ego than it is the hunt.

Exactly. Either we police ourselves or someone will do it for us.... with the full support of the Rifle-only hunters who are tired of finding pressured animals and rotting carcasses in the woods. Not saying it’s necessarily fair or rational, but a Rifleman who has better luck finding lost bow-kills than live Elk is only a season or two from becoming an Anti-Bowhunter.

It’s not an issue “at home” for most people, whose areas are overloaded with whitetails - and where shots over 50 are rarely an issue - but you get out West and it’s a whole different question.

Bow,

What I was laying out was a broad view and not targeting you. If you took it that way....sorry about that. As I said earlier, I don't know the guy other than the other vids I see he and his wife did when I went looking. He has some other hunting vids with short and long shots so I'm thinking he does have some archery skill. I can't speak about him personally so I won't say anything negative about him. Last night I did try to ask a question and post a link to a lawsuit he and his wife filed in March against the Dept of Fish/Wildlife and Dept of Interior. It either didn't post right or got deleted so I let it go.

It looks like they have several businesses with hunting shows/vids maybe being one? If that being the case....ya, I guess they do want the "like" votes on the vids to promote them. That's what other "celeb" hunters and websites seek....they want the clicks. If folks don't like how he or anyone else hunts, that's fine but we have to be careful because it can boomerang and come back at ya (us). Anyway....I thought it was a good vid and figured I'd post it up.

It would be interesting if someone could setup some sort of high tech situation that would mimic every single aspect of this hunt, kind of like a flight simulation. Broken sight, deer on high alert looking directly in the direction of the hunter, and even better if 100 different wild mule deer reactions could be replicated so it rotates through each of them. Bow and arrow hunting was intended to be short range game. Why do so many hunters embrace every advantage in arrow speed and distance capability? Technology has extended the effective range for archery kills, that is a fact. With the advancements in compound bows, scoped compound crossbows, sight aids, releases, range finders, etc,.... how far should archers be shooting at animals. And, should game managers be concerned with higher success rates during archery seasons? This thread seems to be rambling, with few facts and little common sense.

From: GF
15-Oct-19
“And to answer the above posting, why would this shot limit the length of the season?”

That depends where you are. If you live in and in a state which is packed to the rafters with white tails and your game department is desperate to get rid of them, then the answer is “nothing at all”.

On the other hand....

If you live where the Archery season was created as an either-or alternative to Rifle season and the natural limitations of the weaponry were expected to A) keep participation low and B) keep the harvest so low as to be negligible, even given OTC either-sex tags, it’s a serious concern.

Why is Archery season 4 weeks vs 4 days? Limited technology. Why does Archery season encompass the Elk rut? Limited technology. Why do Rifle season hunters continue to be OK with a 4-week long season offering either-sex tags during the rut to huge numbers of hunters using weapons capable of reaching out to 60 or 80 or 100 yards or more?

Damn good question. Muzzleloader season is a whole lot shorter and has always been a lottery, even when most hunters were shooting roundball or pure lead conicals. Why? Because 80-100-yard weapons.

Colorado is now considering cutting back on Archery tags due to the amount of hunting pressure that has resulted from making compounds easier to use at longer and longer range.

Might not be a problem where you are, but it’s a REAL issue.
