I know there has been a lot of buzz about CO and their preference point system and it’s made me wonder about hunting there in the future. I’m in a situation where I have 10 preference points and just don’t know what to do with them. Should I keep stocking piling? Or can I draw a decent archery unit in the next couple of years?

What would you do?

Easy, figure out the unit you can draw that takes the most preference points and go hunt it. You’ll have a quality hunt with 10 NR points. With point creek the units you can draw with 10 or if you waited 5 years and had 15 are most likely identical.

GmU 49! Go for it

Go hunt somewhere. Unless you have a guarantee what tomorrow brings

Unit 49 all the way!!!! I believe several bowsiters hunted it last year maybe they can lead you in the right direction.

Following. I'm in the same boat. I have 11 points.

Preference point requirements and harvest statistics for each unit are available on the Colorado Parks and Wildlife website. I'd start there.

^^^ Harvest Stats! Ha. That’s some funny shit right there

Lol brad! You might get more accurate information in a penis measuring contest than the harvest stats.

I never spoke to the accuracy of the harvest stats, just that its a place to start researching.

Or, the OP could start a thread, and get the same old answers....oh wait....;-)

I'd hold out... Play the wait game on 76. Point creep isn't as bad for that unit. You may be in the game in 5-6 more years, and it's a way better hunt than 49. JMO

With the rumblings from the CPW, we may all be spending points to hunt anywhere in CO.

What rumblings are those, Glunt?

From: Jaquomo

In the recent 5 year season structure they purposely left open the option to make much, or all of the state draw-only for archery. No idea how that might affect the NR allocations but you can bet whatever they do will need to be revenue neutral.

Im in same boat...but I have 17 and will never catch the creep for anything better than 76....I could draw 76, but have no one to hunt it with that has enough points to draw...never see 61 or any of the NW units.....might have to go it alone with an outfitter.

11-Nov-19
Damn, I hunted unit 49 twice with 2 points each time. I just don't see it as a 10 point unit....

I think the 49 suggestions might have been in jest.

Ah, inflation. I bought a brand new new Mercury Capri in 1975 for only $4000 and drove it 135 mph on Wyoming gunbarrels back when we were in invincible. Today $4000 will get you an oil-burning beater with a mysterious electrical problem.

And so it is with point creep.

My problem is that the State is still "paying" me in 1975 points. One per year.

Stick, If you have 17 points and are willing to go with an outfitter then Unit 40 is by far your best choice. The quality of bulls is at least equal to the northwest units. It is easier to draw because the public land hunts are difficult, but with an outfitter on private its a great hunt.

No way is 49 worth that many NR PPs. !!

I'm telling ya.. drop those points on 49 and don't look back.. you can thank me next October. The only problem with 49 is picking which bull you want to shoot

76 over 49

Well as a NR unit 49 is about your only option unless you want to wait another 10 years to catch 76.

Have spent time in 49, 76, 61 and a couple 1/2 pt units. IMO I would not burn 10pts on 49. 76 was a much better experience. Yes 49 has animals but if I saved points for 10 years I would be disappointed. 49 hunts more like some of 1/2 pt units I have been in.

Well, don't ask me. I'll never get to 10 points anywhere because I'm going hunting well before that:)

If you choose 49, make sure your in top shape
