It seems are area is getting more and more 4x5 is it just a bad jean? Can they ever turn into 5x5 or stay the same throughout their lives

From: Bou'bound

yes, it's the bell-bottom syndrome.

Better than 4x4....... just sayin

Bou got me again you are on your A game.

They can definitely change into something else as the years go on. As to why you have so many, yeah I’d guess it’s a dominant gene. We have tons of split G2’s around here

Anything over a typical 4 frame is a bonus. I wouldn't call it a "bad gene".

Genes definitely play a large roll. I've passed on a dominant 3x3 mulie the last 3 years in a row on my place. Now, I'm kinda regretting that decision, because many of the younger bucks I'm seeing have similar genetics.

My best deer ever was a 4x5.

I couldn't care less about net score. 25 years ago I thought it mattered, but I've changed my mind about that.

As far as genetics go, are we more concerned with score potential or a healthy herd...?

From: Elite 1

Healthy is number one we have had no diseases in our area so far. I can go 15 miles to another stand and seldom have four by fives but around the house it is very common. Just wondering what the reasoning is for this. Maybe there isn’t one.

Genetics. There is an area near Laramie WY where more muleys are 3x4 than 4x4. Where I hunt on the CO plains, there are big 3x3s and big 2x3s that never even out. They pass on those genes.

These 3 bucks were killed the last two days within a mile guessing all 3 1/2. Could they have turned into 5s next year guess we will never know. Just wondering with all the cameras out there if it possible.

Funny you should bring this up. Just returned from 12 days in Kansas where I either saw or got trail cam pics of at least 7 mature 4x5's. I've hunted this area for 12 years and it was definitely an uncommon year for that.

Too many 4x5s?

I’d be pretty happy to have such problems

From: 1boonr

The real reason you are getting so many 4x5’s is strictly because they have 4 points on one antler and 5 on the other. Some however have 5 points on one antler and 4 on the other

I suppose it would be better to have 5x4s

Why game and fish departments don’t do a better job of having early season management hunts to cull out this genetic defect. A CULL license and a real buck license. And bring in some good 5x5 and 6x6 breeder bucks to boost the best case outcome.

?????

Can always break one off if it's bothersome? Have to straighten all the pictures when you walk into a room? You might be a redneck with OCD......

Thanks Grubby, that was a couple years back. I must have gotten him before he could pass on his genes because I was able to get a 5x5 this year. Ha!
