Yard Hopper hunt 8 :) :)

Sunday, January 12, goose hunt 8. Temp, 22 degrees, warming to 35, light winds and clear. I hunted out of the house blind this AM; good to change it up so the geese will not get use to the decoys being in the same location. If nothing else, the scenery is great.
8:15 I hear and then see two geese coming in from the left and behind the pine trees next to the blind. They land

I know there is a second goose so I lean over in the blind, and there it is at 36 yards. I adjust my single pin sight and get ready to send an arrow when I see more geese to the left, and closer.

The total flock is airborne including the WACKED one but it is hanging a leg. They head out of the pasture and over the trees to the east. The Wacked one is loosing elevation and I know it went down in a large field 300 yards away. I grab Chase out of the truck and off we go in search. Chase finds it dead.

Ha awesome pics of Chase there Paul!
Just awesome! Great pics of the hunt, especially the action shots of Chase and the wounded goose. Thanks for sharing and congrats oon the success sir!
Chase, you're my hero! Paul, you come in a close second. Good shooting too.
Gotta love that dog! Makes th shooter look good!-)
Good job !! Very entertaining!!
Dang Paul you broke the ice yesterday and the birds are hitting the ground. Chase looks very happy!
Great job glad things are coming together!
Got to keep you guys entertained. Here is a picture of the second group of geese landing. Always trying to get a shot of them landing with wings out and feet down. Paul
Really cool..congrats and thanks for taking the effort to share your hunts
I was wondering how a hit goose gets handled by a dog like Chase. Now I know and very impressed. Good job guys!
badbull, I weighted the largest goose today and it weighted 10.8 pounds. Quite a mouth full for any dog.
The geese, especially on the ground, seem to give up more easy. If a broken wing, they really can not get away from the dog or even a human. I have had to chase down a couple. When compared to a wounded turkey, if wounded, there is a good chance you may never find a turkey. I have lost a couple of turkeys but never had a dog along to track them. This goose today was the first that gave Chase a real challenge and stood its ground. It is so rewarding to see Chase, as he was meant to be, a retriever/tracker, and good at it. Fun stuff for sure.
I will take a few days off from the goose hunting. Thanks for the nice comments and for following along. my best, Paul
Its all coming together now. Congrats Chase & Paul. Teamwork.
Way to go Paul. We all enjoy the show you and Chase put on. Congratulations and keep after em. Kurt
Well done, Chase and Paul!!
Good job Paul. Way to keep your shooting on par!
This thread always makes me smile - love it! The more pics, the better.
sBH, you would believe that a guy that can hit a goose at 30,40,50 yard, would never miss a deer, pronghorn, etc. I guess, not so. Go figure! Paul
Way to go paul &chase !!!
I'm impressed with you and Chase. Looks like a lot of fun and your scenery beats the heck out of anything in my neighborhood.
Shuteye and Last savage, Great thing about using the bow and arrow for goose hunting, you do not have to worry about biting down on a steel pellet.
Great story Paul. I'm going to have to go back and get caught up on the first 7 hunts.
Great Day, Paul... Congrats!
Great stuff Paul! I gotta find a place to do this...
Just out of curiosity, why don't you use the decapitator-style turkey broadheads for geese?
40 yard shot.
40 yard shot.
Surfbow, Good question. I am not a fan of the decapitator bh for turkeys or geese. While I have been able to decoy turkeys to within 10-20 yards where the decapitator head style is most effective, most of my shots at geese are beyond 20 yards and like the last two goose kills, 30-40 yards. I am just a body shot placement, type of bow hunter. Many of the geese I kill with a Mech bH are crippled with a broken wing which prevents them from going far and to then be run down by the dog.
The other reason is that I do not want to "duck tape" the heads back on for a photo opportunity. my best, Paul
Or “goose tape” as the case May be. ;)
—Jim
Now Jim, that was a good catch, ie, goose tape. There were a lot of geese around yesterday on the adjacent properties, so this morning, ie, Wed. I am heading out in an hour. Might be an historic day in the field but then, one never knows. Look out for hunt 9 coming up today. Gotta go. Paul
I hear ya Paul! Aim small miss small I guess. I shoot gophers with my long bow at my jobsites. Put a 6 point bull elk in front of me and I can shoot over his back at 10 yards!
Gotcha on the broadheads, I've never really hunted turkeys so I know nothing about them, but I understand about the longer shot distance need for geese in the field.
