Scoot, my favorite was the beginning when he said he drew a "less than desirable" tag with 9 resident points. lol Can't wait to draw my "less than desirable" AZ elk tag!
Fun video and a nice bull, but that quartering to 41 yard shot thru the guts, that luckily hit some major arteries in the rear, is not a shot that I'd be terribly proud of. Glad it worked for him, but maybe he should get more than just one bull under his belt before he speaks authoritatively about how it should be done.
Neat video and an awesome encounter with the bull bedding down in front. Hard to argue with a dead bull. But if that was me, I'd be putting that one in the "better to be lucky than good" column.
Yes, glad it all worked out, terrible shot selection. He grew impatient & had the now or never attitude & let it fly! The bull was checking on his cows & not going far, with a bit more patience he would have most likely been broadside & much closer for a higher percentage kill shot! Definitely glad it all worked out!
I’m glad GG and Jethro posted on this one. I had exactly the same thoughts, but if I were to say so, I’d just get told to get off my elitist high horse and stop being so argumentative all the time.... LOL.
Did anybody else notice that when the bull was bedded, he seemed to be staring at the camera about 99% of the time?
Might have been just an editing decision, but I kind of wonder if the bull wasn’t a bit mistrustful of his cows.
I'll take it a step further and say this video illustrates the type of horn porn that is ruining our sport. For the hunter to post that video without so much as even mentioning his poor shot selection, poor execution, and extremely lucky outcome, is simply irresponsible, IMO. It only promotes the "poke and hope" mentality that seems to prevail with many hunters these days.
Congratulations to the hunter on getting his first bull!
Good video of how elk will just mill around you in a bedding area. If you are set up, stay still and have patience good things can happen when that bull makes a mistake...
Not a shot that I could or would take at the distance and angle.
"Matt, for him to mention his poor shot selection, poor execution, and extremely lucky outcome, he'd have to be aware of them. I don't think he is."
You may be right. Sadly, he'll probably allow this one lucky outcome to dictate more poor choices in the future, which will undoubtedly have different results.
And what was that nonsense about pass-thrus versus arrows that remain in the animal? I threw up a little when I heard that tidbit of hunting wisdom.
Great video and congratulations on a great bull!! I did a double take when I heard that statement about his arrow staying in the animal producing a more ethical kill!!! Hmmm...
