I’ve always benefited from Friends made with the Pope & Young Club and Bowsite and this is my latest fun hunt which was one of the very best.
In 2007 while attending Measurers training class for P&Y Club I met Dennis Razza. At the time he was 31 and I thought it quite impressive that at his young age he was that committed to P&Y Club. We became great friends after that and five or so years ago he became a Taxidermist sponsor on Bowsite. Many of you have done business with Dennis and many more admire his gift as a taxidermist.
In 2011 Lenny Wood from Texas asked me if I thought it would be fun for him to bring his Dad to attend the P&Y Convention in Rochester. He came, attended the Bowsite “Meet & Greet” and we became good friends.
A bit later Lenny got a great Archery, Mountain Goat and he asked Dennis to mount it. They became good friends. Last April Lenny asked Dennis and I to come hunt his Texas Lease in January. Dennis and I had never hunted Texas and jumped at the chance.
Here’s our hunt re-cap. God Blessed Texas...
The land owner of Lenny’s lease wants does controlled and it has to be a big part of the management for Lenny and his other members. This is a note the Rancher left at the Ranch house.
I hope you brought more than 5 arrows :-)
Here is one of the many ways we know we are in Texas. How about a mandatory 10 year sentence in Rhode Island:)
This was in case we saw an easy doe shot while driving around to help the doe count.
Temps were very comfy. Nice relief from late season cold at home.
Get some of this. Better than Dots

Lenny takes his Guide and cooking talents very seriously. This is the rub he puts on the beef before he cooks on the grill. Wowser... Good stuff
A Lenny specialty. Halapenas, cream cheese wrapped with Bacon. Quickly gone.
Lenny had a friend come to the ranch with a buck he got a few months ago for Dennis and I to measure for B&C entry. What a beauty.
Dennis with a Grey Fox. Beautiful.
Dennis with a Grey Fox. Beautiful.
After dinner one night Dennis and I were treated to another Texas tradition. Predator hunting from the back of a pick up truck. Man O man what fun.
Is the safety off on that rifle?
That would be a mandatory ass-whoopin' where I'm from. :-)
I hope there will be a bow pic sometime in this thread? :)
Bow photos coming soon...
Joey Safety is off and bolt up
Pretty standard way to carry in a truck on a ranch
Our goal in the few days we hunted was to shoot does and older bucks with so-so antler potential. Here is a picture of Lenny and me with a doe.
Thanks for doing a recap, Charlie. It was a great weekend.

Dennis then shot this really old buck with a unique rack. It was one Lenny had targeted. Cool buck and a great shot.
There were two target bucks at the blind Dennis was at and an hour after he shot the first buck Target buck number 2 appeared. Dennis texted Lenny and he said take him if you can. Done deal!!
Len and Den.

2 Great bucks on one sit
2 Great bucks on one sit
Both Dennis’ shots were draino shots with easy tracking.
This is a trail camera pic of the buck I hit but we could not find. The weed in the background was about 3 foot high every where and my shot was a bit marginal. We gridded using onX for a total of 7 hours to no avail. Bummer
Looks pretty good except for the fact I wasn’t invited! ;)

Enjoy it all

Dennis caped out his buck and I put a quick tape on it. After drying period it will net just above P&Y Minimum.
We drove back to Midland for our next day flight home and used the saws all to take the racks off.
Nice recap Charlie. What part of the state were you guys hunting in
Texas Sunset
Texas Sunset
I’ll begin and end this thread with the amazing opportunities we can share by our cummulative relationships made on Bowsite and P&Y Club. A classic Texas sunset to end the hunt.
RK - closest big town is San Angelo.
Lenny thanks. I was going to guess north east of Abilene So I was real wrong:)
Looks like you guys had a great time
Is your county covered up with Turkey?
WRT lost buck, no dogs allowed? Nice bucks taken...
Awesome trip! Thanks for sharing!
Nice recap... congratulations fellows.
RK - we have turkeys, but we are not covered up.
TrapperKayak - dogs are allowed. Based on how Charlie’s buck behaved after the shot, we thought he would not be far from where Charlie last saw him. Charlie was able slip out quietly the opposite way out of the stand a couple hours after the shot.
Good recap. Thanks Charlie and Lenny
Looks like a fun hunt for mid winter, congrats!
Good times! Congratulations on a great trip guys!
Thanks for the recap!
Looks like there are still some great bucks in that country!
Great trips with great buddies, that's one of the things that makes life worth living! Congrats guys!
Y’all had a great time, that’s easy to see. I like that part of the state, I just never could figure how to make a living out there.
Good friends and plenty of opportunities, that makes for a good trip !

Looks like a great time spent with good friends. Doesn’t get any better than that!
How many does did you guys end up taking?
I’m assuming that cool looking grey fox is getting mounted? If so, I think Dennis is about due to treat us to another awesome “how to” taxidermy thread! How bout it, Dennis??!!
Great adventure! Thanks for sharing!
What a fun way to spend a winter week!
What a great time that had to be! Congrats fellas!
Great time with great friends! Texas Rocks!

Ended up with just two does. Bucks were pounding all the feeders.
“Texas guys like big trucks....”
No Subarus here, or whatever Ike used to call them ??
Great recap of what looks like a great hunt. Thanks for sharing!
A great Texas adventure there. Glad ya'll had a great time. Texas is such a unique place.
Nice recap, Charlie...looks like a fun place to be, this time of Year!
Way to make the off season the "on" season, Charlie!! The only thing better the hunting and friends is hunting with friends. Congrats to all!
That looks like an awesome time!
Black Gold, Texas tea and amazing sunsets...
Texas became the 13th state I’ve hunted Whitetails. Blessed I am..
I love hunting TX. Congrats Gents!
Good stuff boys! Thanks for posting
That first buck you mentioned with the wide spread and a bit non-typical that his friend shot ---- just curious, what did it score?
great pics. Looks like a good time.
Blood trailing in south texas is like nowhere else. The soil sucks it up as if it never existed. The cactus and mesquite prohibit much movement.
The deer there broadly seem more acute than elsewhere to the shot (jumping the string more violently). Perhaps the amount of predators.
