So I went on my first DIY elk hunt last year, awesome but no shot opportunities. I am going to be 60 this year and am trying to think of a way to up my odds substantially by next years archery season to get a shot at an elk. I don't care if its a cow or spike or gigantor 6X6. I am willing to spend around $4000 if that's what it takes. I prefer DIY, truck camp, but I am a realist with my expectations. I live in CA an would prefer AZ or UT but open. Any suggestions would be great.

You could try Gavilan creek outfitters in New Mexico he has some options for guided or diy. Never hunted there but he has done some taxidermy work for me.

Hunted OTC Utah last year. Got within a 100 yards of a cow. Its a tough hunt for a beginner but I will be back soon. I do enjoy runnin around in new woods huntin like that but I started a little late in life.

Another vote for OTC elk in Utah - Robb provided some great info on public areas to try a month or two ago. I have enjoyed good elk hunting there, with one kill and chances to kill on the other hunts.

I’m from Florida and am just trying to get my first elk, I don’t care if it is a cow or spike/bull just want my freezer full. Would you guys suggest doing Utah instead of Colorado? I did Colorado last year, didn’t even see an elk and was planning to go again this year just a different area but all I’m reading online is how crazy crowded archery season in Colorado is. I was reading about Utah having OTC spike hunts and was even thinking of doing one of those. Thanks for any input.

I hunted Utah last year OTC DIY for spike or cow and did get within 100 yards but no shot opportunities. these guys on here are great about pointing you in the right direction as there advice helped me alot. I did see other hunters but on monday i pretty much had the area to myself. I want to be within bow range of an elk before i die so im getting a little anxious.

If ya have any LE Bull elk points in Utah, I certainly would get the Spike/Cow tag and get to know the LE unit (s) you want to draw LE with in for the future.
The Spike/Cow tag is valid in 'Most' of the LE units so you would have Boo-Coo hunt area!!
Good luck, Robb
