Found years later shed

Sunday morning found me driving around looking for turkeys and enjoying the weather. I came up to a field that has been grass as long as I can remember. There’s been a huge food plot on that farm every year for 15 years. Looked for sheds there many times. Well Sunday driving up I saw it had been burned off! The shed hunter in me was overly excited. I parked on the road and started glassing. 60 yards out in the burn I spot my first shed. And it’s a pretty good one. I run out in my Krocs and sweatpants ( and kuiu jacket cause that’s important ??) . I pulled up about a 60” shed.

Now I’m excited and ended up finding 3 more rather quickly. That shed wouldn’t leave my mind though. Something about it stuck out. Monday dad stops over and looks at it. We discuss how it’s been there a long time... it’s light. Starting to crack. Moss on it. When he leaves I look harder at it. That funky g4, that big bladed brow.... looks oddly familiar. I take it inside and hold it next to my largest buck, a deer that I shot 1/2 mile away on our property. It’s close but no match. Then it dawns on me, my big buck in the living room.... it’s got big blades brows.... and a small g4.... seconds later I have a match! This deer was also killed 1/2 mile from this field on our property.

He was my biggest buck at the time. 262 pounds live and 150” of antler. 42” of mass if memory serves correct.

Now the crazy part.... I shot that buck in 2012. And on Sunday May 3, 2020, I found his 2011 shed. It’s been there, waiting to be found for that long. And some how I drove by and found the shed off my buck. Just crazy to me

I had the exact thing happen. Killed a buck in 2008. Found his shed from 07 a year later. I had to have stepped over it a half dozen times.

Great story, looks very convincing and possibly is the same bucks drop...still, I’ed keep an eye out in that area for one of his off-springs. It’s possible, genetics after all can result in offspring with the same antler configuration. At any rate, nice find.

Very cool find and story, Luke! Do you think both of the bucks that you compared the shed to, we’re possibly related, beings that there is similar antler configuration on both deer? Also, is that the dreaded “frontal shot” ?!

Very cool Luke!! Thanks for sharing, gorgeous deer!
Funny thing is, I posted a story last year of finding a shed last spring (my wife actually found it) off of my biggest buck that I also shot in 2012, but the shed was the one side I was missing from 2011. Strangely similar story!

That’s crazy Matt!
T-Roy, that shot while not recommended by some worked very well.... and yes both bucks could be related. They were shot a year apart out of the same tree. Both had big bladed brows, over 40” of mass each and giant bodies. The other one tipped the scales at 300 live. Grossed 165. Been a good tree....

I did the same thing in Florida (smaller deer) found a shed summer 2018 shot a big buck by Florida standards and after looking at it a few weeks it occured to me the shed was his.Dont find many sheds as thick as it is here.

I once found a shed while walking around my property. I hung it in the crotch of a small tree. I forgot about it for several years and when I saw it again the tree had grown around it. Looked pretty cool with an antler right in the middle of a tree. If it had been left on the ground it would have been eaten up in a few months.

Cool when that happens. The year after I killed my 218 nontypical muley I found one of his sheds from the year before I killed him. Then I started looking at it and realized I had the same left side shed from the year before that in my shed pile. Really neat to see how the antler developed over those three seasons, and "blew up" the year I killed him. Thanks for sharing your story!
