Good Lord it seems like forever this year! Good luck everyone...
LOTS of draws coming out soon!
When are they? 21rst I believe?
im waiting on my CC refund!! Paying interest for a drawing i withdrew from sucks. But i dont want a 1400.00 negative balance on my card either. Maybe one of yall will draw my elk tag.
I hate the wait but I guess it's just a new normal.
Our group of 4 also withdrew from WY. So that is more Gen tags for you guys to have a chance at. Good luck to everyone.
Any chance that they will announce early.....they did for moose and sheep (or was it moose and bison)?
Over the past 5 years, they've come out a few days before the actual posted release date, if my memory is correct.
The elk draw has never been in May before so who knows. This year it'll probably be late!
Well, they've certainly had long enough to do it...
I'll probably draw my first VERY longshot choice since I already spent the refund I'm anticipating. :-)
I'm just hoping they allow NRs to hunt without a 14 day self-quarantine. They just closed State Parks to nonresidents.
I forgot I paid for that tag up front. That was a long time ago.
Lost Arra's Link
Jaq: closing campgrounds for non-residents? Why don't they just close the borders? Non-resident campers are a greater risk than resident campers? It's pretty ironic the adjacent article is about celebrating tourism in Wyoming.
14 day self-quarantine expired last week.
Losr Arra, I hear you. There sure are a lot of WY residents coming down into NoCo right now, presumably for our weed and women.
If I draw a WY tag I wont be staying in any "State Park", so come on tag!
Just out of curiosity, is anyone aware of any stats on the number of application withdrawals this year?
I’m still in, but my partner withdrew. I suspect the odds will be better than in recent years, but I really don’t know...
—Jim
By far the worst thing Wyoming has ever done... IMO
No results yet...Now my watch has begun lol
I predict they'll come out on the published date. I also predict I'll see an "Unsuccessful."
Jaq we'll stay up here if you all stay down there, lol. You should have seen the parade of campers coming up 287 when Colorado lifted their stay at home order .
Lost arra we have several counties with very few cases of covid and we want to keep it that way.
Good luck all in the draw.
I know two guys who withdrew. Anybody else withdraw or know someone who did ? I’m anticipating seeing the odds for regular and special general licenses as much as I am seeing the word successful for my own app. I’m pretty sure odds will be better. But the backlash is that next years they’ll be worse. I’m glad I picked 2021 to burn my deer points there instead of elk hunting.
wytex: I understand the goal but CAMPING? Was the non-resident fishing ban lifted? or the 14 day quarantine for non-residents?
I, along with my entire group of hunting buddies, withdrew and/or modified our apps due to two of the guys drawing tags in AZ. Personally, I modified from a general tag with 3 points to 100-1. Had Wyoming not changed their date, a slug of us would have drawn general tags because the AZ tags were unexpected. As it is, Wyoming will need to wait until next year, unless we are surprised by other tags before the modify date again.
If Colorado was serious about keeping nonres out to control virus they would stop selling pot to nonres. Which we all know that ain't happening.
NoWiser, I also changed my sons app to 100-1 after he drew an AZ tag :) Had a feeling a lot of guys probably did the same.
They wont close borders because is unconstitutional to do so. We can move freely between all states , virus or not.
I can’t not hunt elk! I’ll hunt and camp up high until we eat the entire thing!!! I think that even if there are restrictions to abide by there will be hunting one way or another. I have one partner and yesterday I sold my 10x12 wall tent and doubled our floor space by buying a 14x16. I can handle socially distant elk hunting.
Thanks to everyone who withdrew from or changed from the GEN tag! :-) I'm in with only two points so every bit helps. If I find out I drew a tag I am headed up to scout over Memorial Day weekend. I want to see how my favorite area looks after the fire a couple years ago. The wildlife biologist from the area said the fire was pretty intense and that last year's regen was not impressive. But the deadfall was significantly cleared and this year's growth could be good.
Best of luck to everyone! Dave
Dave, last I heard they were saying they weren’t letting non residents East of the Great Lakes and on the west coast into Wyoming this year due to the large number of covid cases on the coasts.
dgildy i'd be very surprised if you do not draw.
My hunting partner and I both withdrew, sure was nice to be able to have that option. Thank you Wyoming.....and Arizona ;)
I'm from Arizona, and thankfully we have a pretty low incidence of the virus. Restaurants, bars and gyms opening this week. So hopefully WY does not keep me from entering.
This will be my last year applying for elk LE in Wyoming I think, I don’t like the wait, interest on cc waiting for refund, and the requirement to buy points later even after you don’t draw, etc.
Last year I got busy and forgot so I am less 1 point, I think I’ll have 4 this year when I buy so I’ll probably find someone to share with for a gen tag and be done with it...
I have two friends who withdrew from Wyoming general because they drew New Mexico.
I don’t like the wait.... or do I? Withdrew, withdrew, withdrew..... I like to hear that. Congrats and good luck to guys who drew elsewhere.
It wouldn’t surprise me if the next move Wyoming made was to back the application deadline up to leave the door open to those who don’t draw in other states. Yuk!
Looks like my Wyoming odds are growing significantly. Impatiently waiting for the 21st.
I too know a couple different guys that Withdrew as they are Self Employed and want to get as much work as they can and spend as little as they should.
Come on 21st,
Robb
Sounds like I should have tried to draw Wy instead of UT.
Tick tock tick tock Wyoming....
Looks like it’ll be next week.
Can't believe this is still pending... SO STUPID
They need almost 2 weeks after the change date to do their tests and audits, and they release Elk on thursdays.
Fun fact, FL gator apps deadline was yesterday. Results out today. Yes that is under 24 hours.
They probably sell more fishing licenses than hunting licenses.
Hopefully it's a day early
I saw a guy i know posted his results for Wyoming just now. I dont have an app in now so i cant confirm.
Nope not seeing anything.
I just called, it’s fake news.
KHNC: maybe the guy applied for sheep, moose, goat or bison (May 7 results)
I'm really interested in seeing the draw odds. I will have a tag due to a medical issue from last season.
Lost Arra, yes ,you are correct. Sorry, i thought they were done since he didnt post til today. He posted he was successful on Sheep.
Just got an email that said 10am in the morning.
Just wanted to say congrats to a cpl acquaintances and Bowsiter's who drew their Elk tags. You gotta believe !!
Relax Elkman. WapitiBob is actually a 13 year old Russian hacker who toys with the Wyoming elk draw when he is not manipulating American elections on Facebook. You don't want to upset him. Your preference points could be at risk.
WapitiBob knows all... Most knowledgeable person on any forum when it comes to the draws.
Tick........Tock! Refresh,Refresh, Refresh, refresh
I get bored easily and don't care to wait for WY results, so I find a way in.
And then you entertain yourself for a few hours by tormenting us. I get it, I'd do the same...
I bet WapitiBob secretly unwrapped Christmas presents early as a child.
Yeah baby! Drew a gen tag with 0 points
Such a long wait just to be disappointed. Thought I'd at least pull a type 6 tag.
Nothing for any of my crew, as expected.
I'm headed to WY assuming they will let me in the state in September
Yeah baby finally unit 7 elk
Congratulations Brett. Proof that miracles do happen. I had a friend draw with zero last year. That’d never happen to me.
Wyoming gave me 700 dollars!! Sweet!!
Used a lot of points last year to help 3 other guys with no points draw the gen tag and we had a great hunt. Super pumped to hunt the same area again....this time with better knowledge of the area. How many points did you have Joe?
Big refund commin!
Congrats to those who drew!
Brett that's the definition of karma! Good for you. Hope you have a great hunt.
General for me too. Hope they'll let us in the state by then!
I had zero. But I knew two guys with 10 each. I guess I’m as lucky as you. Well... not really I have to babysit now. Lol
Nothing here, thought we were in with general special but nope...
Come on Colorado!
No love here. Zero points so had to get lucky.
I did draw. General special w/1 point (solo applicant).
—Jim
Finely after many years of RED my partner, his son and I hit Green on a long shot... wow, beyond shocked!!!
Unsuccessful for General with 2 points. Bummer!
No WYO love for me. Looks like I will be hunting OTC unless I draw a lottery ticket hunt.
I was unsuccessful for a 38-9 with 10 points. Congrats to the guys who drew. Great tag. How many points did you have for the 38-9 tags?
Unusual that they didn't post the draw odds report same time as the results.
Successful on GEN tag. I knew we would be with our points, but it's still exciting to have the tag in hand, so to speak. . .
When I hit the results page, I see a link for the 2019 results. Are those the results? It doesn't have enough identifying info inside the results for me to know if it was for this year or last year.
1 Point, 'Cheapie Fee' , solo applicant as my buddy withdrew to keep his bsns in the Black, during this C-19 for his Self employment business----->
License Type Results Area/Type NONRESIDENT COW/CALF ELK Successful XX-6
NONRESIDENT ELK Successful GEN--Any elk
I'm very thankful,
Robb
Ps~~Yes, my 12th Gen tag out of 14 years......True that W-bob-----'Ya Gotta Believe'....Ut LE Bow Bull and these results!!
Looking for a spot in a general unit that's flat, easy hunting, with multiple opportunities at 350+ bulls. Not asking for anyone's honeyhole.....
Dam, you guys really jacked up the type 9 odds.
Consolation cow tag for me. I’m elk hunting and that’s all that matters!
Lou ... "Flat" ... or "Horizontal". After all, "flat" comes at all angles.
Lou- I know a spot. But it requires a crossbow and an ebike. Oh, and you have to shoot Rages.
Draw odds are posted now. It appears that nothing stops point creep.
I guess not. I should have drawn a bull tag in the special draw, and had 50/50 odds of reduced price cow tag. I drew nothing, oh well.
No dice got my group with 2.2 average. ID or CO for me now I guess. Knew I should’ve applied to MT as a backup. Never again.
Well I'm in. Now I just hope I don't have to drive,, 2k is just to far to drive. I like getting picked up at the airport. Congrats to all that drew. Sorry to my bowsite friends that didn't .. Ed
JDECK, that's for sure! Even with Covid the unit I drew jumped a lot. I was pretty much a shoe in for the regular draw but decided to go special. Good thing I did as I wouldn't of drawn in the regular. I guess my 11 point tag is now a once in a lifetime hunt as I'll probably never draw it again with this insane point creep.
0/16 this year on tags so far...
Drew general with 2.66pts. This will be my first wyoming hunt after going otc in colorado for the last 4 years. How much better of a hunt can i expect?
Buckskin21, depends on where you go, but in general, it's slightly better with slightly better quality bulls, slightly better bull:cow ratios, and slightly less pressure. But there are places that that is not the case as there are areas that are much better than CO OTC.
It's nothing like a nice LE tag. I don't hunt the WY general tag anymore after hunting it several times as it's just not good enough of a tag to pull me away from AK. This'll probably be the first year in 10 that I don't hunt elk although I said that last year and ended up going to CO for 2 days just to scratch the itch. Might try and pull a leftover cow tag in case I finish my pronghorn hunt early.
Confirmed I didn't draw my LE unit.
Buy that Etolin tag on the ABA auction Ike. Only $500 right now. ;)
Good info idyllwildarcher. We bivy camp so i'm hoping its a lot less crowded when we hike in a bit. I know its all the rage now days though. We had people walking through our camp in colorado every day last year but we did manage to kill a cow
Buckskin in the other 3 years you hunted Colorado how did you do? Did you hunt the same place or move around?
25/27 TAGS for wife and I. Daughter pulled a type 4 cow tag for 25/27 as well...
Excited to actually be hunting together.
Mule power. I killed a calf and a yearling in 2 of those years and got skunked once. My brother shot a cow last year but we hunt we recurves so we were ecstatic with all of those elk. They were all killed in different spots miles apart within the same unit but it's gotten progressively busier every year
Buckskin, good for you and great that you were thrilled. That's how it should be in this era of horn porn. But what does hunting with a recurve have to do with it? Just curious.
Good wife!!. I never get to choose where we go to dinner.
Added elk to to the sheep tag
Jaquomo. It's harder to kill them with a recurve so we're happy with whatever we get. a lot of other hunters that use others weapons wouldnt be happy with or talk about killing a small one
I agree that hunting with a recurve in harder than a compound, as a crossbow is easier than a compound, as a muzzleloader is easier than a crossbow and so on. Ed
Too soon for these posts to start? :)
Buckskin, I disagree that it's harder to kill an elk with a recurve than a compound in the hands of a competent hunter. Elk hunting is made for trad bows. Many trad guys too often justify failure or killing a small animal with "but...", when more often it speaks to their lack of hunting skill or lack of patience.
Don't be ashamed of killing animals that made you happy, regardless of bow choice. You chose to shoot a cow and a calf, and there's nothing wrong with that. Don't justify anything with, "but we shoot trad..". It diminshes what you accomplished and sounds like you are making excuses.
Wow. Learn something every day . I guess I’m not a competent hunter. It sure is harder for me to kill an elk with a recurve than a compound bow.
MAybe we can get some lessons?
Jaquomo you're definitely right about me being incompetent when It come to elk as i've only been doing it for 4 years.
Jaquoma as trad guy I have to agree with the statement that Buckskin said because as being new to this style of hunting he may think it’s harder with only 4 years of experience but you disagreed but in the same paragraph you said that elk were made for trad hunters so wondering where you came up with that information. On another note I’ve had the privilege to hunt with whom I thought were some of the best hunters in Wyoming and just so happened to shoot traditional equipment and also not once have I heard any hunter shooting trad say “but”... and blame there outcome on the equipment they were shooting. Buckskin congrats on the elk enjoy the hunt as it’s what matters and those great steaks at the end of the hunt.
Never thought I was at a disadvantage because of my equipment. Was harder to shoot well with my recurve, didn’t have to practice as hard with compound and release.
"Looking for a spot in a general unit that's flat, easy hunting, with multiple opportunities at 350+ bulls. Not asking for anyone's honeyhole....."
^^^^ Im also looking for this, AND a resident guide!!! Haha
Hunting elk with my traditional gear is easier. It weighs 1/4 what my compound rig weighs. Killing can be a different story simply because of my effective range for trad vs compound vs rifle. I'm proud of every animal I've taken with either bow. Cows are easier to get tags but I find they are no less challenging to kill. The rut doesn't seem to make them stupid like the bulls.
Wyoming presents some unique challenges where I hunt. I prefer the longbow/recurve in the timber but sometimes the elk are out in the rocks and open sage and shot opportunities are longer. I killed two cows last season with the compound out in the sage/rocks and in both situations I never would have even drawn my longbow as there was zero chance of getting closer.
Drew the general tag and really looking forward to September.
My point was that elk are more often killed at close range than long range, that being able to draw and shoot quickly without having to organize sights, peeps, bubble levels, estimate the range on an animal that's moving through the timber are definitely advantages. 50% of P&Y bulls are killed inside 30 yards.
I'm a lifelong trad hunter, shoot in a big club that used to be mostly trad hunters, and I hear the "but" excuse all the time. I believe it diminishes what we do. We choose to hunt with that gear. It shouldn't be an excuse.
Since switching to a compound a couple years ago, every animal I've killed, I could have killed with my longbows or recurves. Killed my bull last year at 7 yards, drew on him when his head went behind a tree at 9. Big muley buck at 22. But I have blown opportunities at bulls in the timber that I could've easily killed with my longbow.
Buckskin, if you've killed two in four years, you are doing great, no matter what you shoot. Don't apologize with a "but". Be proud and say "and" if it matters to you. Congratulations.
Quinn, if you need some guidance, you might search out my feature in TBM called "Elk Tactics for Traditional Bowhunters"...
What is the date for refunds? Next CC payment due 6/15. Need something else to look forward to! lol
Jaquomo. Which issue was your write up in?
Jaquomo,
I'll be sure to check it out. Thanks for the advice.
We're going to Wyoming!! Successful Gen tag.
I cant wait to get my WY NonRes fishing license! Thats worth $100 right there!
Buckskin, it was a couple years ago before I retired from magazine writing. But TBM puts most of their articles online so I bet you can find it there. Mostlyvit was about how to craft short range shot setups, and when and how to draw since we can't draw, hold, and eat a Clif Bar while waiting for the elk to come in. Also about how to anticipate the shot windows long before he walks into them. Killing them with trad bows requires a different skill set. We screwed up a LOT before we refined it.
Lou... I think your account has been hacked by a Leatherwaller! Lmfao could not resist!
Congrats to those that drew, I'll be looking forward to seeing some more great photos and stories this fall.
54-9 for my buddy and I this year !!!
Super stoked for some early summer scouting trips.
Cheers, Pete
Drew general with 2.5 points. Excited to get back to Wyoming except maybe hunt more southern units to stay away from the big bears.
eight of use drew with 2 pts in special head to wyoming in sept south east of yellowstone
Kansas... outfitted or DIY? Either way take bear spray in that area. Or a handgun you know how to use... or both.
We have plenty of elk down here Royboy.
Does anyone know when WY starts mailing the tags out?
outfitted hunted there two times last 10 years unit 60
