Perhaps he was inspired by this monumental work of taxidermy, on display at the Milwaukee public museum.
A couple interesting notes :It was decided that all the animals would be shown running and would have only one hoof touching the ground, .......This exhibit opened in 1966 and would become the largest one known in the world at this time. It would additionally become the most famous diorama at the Milwaukee Public Museum,
No Indians (First Nation, aborigine, tribal clan people ) were harmed in making of this display.

If I remember correctly from history class in high school, the teacher said it was all the RAGE at that time to shoot buffalo where that fellow did. History books claimed it made for massive blood trails and quick kills.
On a more serious note.....great taxidermy work. it would be interesting to know how many hours went into that

Makes perfect sense for them to use gut shots. Easiest place to penetrate and (eventually) a dead bison. Not like it’s the last day of the hunt and back to work the next day. Lots of time and lots of targets.

Love the realistic scene of your picture Buffalo1. As shown he is hunting with a spear. They would try and ride up along side quartering to the buff. Then slide the spear hear behind the last rib into the chest. They had a better chance of not only killing the buff, but retrieving their spear that took a long time to make and had great value. Close quarters with a buffalo while on horseback would be pretty wild!
