'morning All,
I just got back from an early summer hiking/scouting trip on my LE Bow Bull tag here in my home state.
I took my nieces son with me, so my 13 year old Great Nephew?
The kid did just fine.
Thanks for taking the time to view All

I got razzed via text messages when I shared this pic as the wind was blowing and got my shirt full of air, NO I haven't put on 20 lbs and No I don't have 18 inch biceps!!!
Some of you guys are pretty Comical.
The kid got the Loft and up bathroom, he was stoked! haha

This LE Unit borders Wyoming LQ Elk 31/32 to the North and Colorado draw Elk 201 to the east, LE Diamond Mountain to the south and Flaming Gorge Lake to the west separates it from the North Slope gen elk unit.
1 of the very Few LE units with NO spike hunting as is Diamond Mountain too I believe.
General draw deer unit 8
LE North Slope Antelope
Oil North Slope Baretop Mnt.Rocky Ram
Oil North Slope Moose
Of course Bear and Mnt. Lion tags too
I found a real nice Airbnb to stay at during our mid-week trip
We arrived at the trailhead the next morning @ 0545 and met with 1 of the Rocky Ram tag holders.
They had unload 2 quads but I told them it was off limits to motor vehicles. The hubby stated it showed all kinda of roads via Goggle Earth and he thought they should be able to quad scout.
Any--hooo
About the 2 mile mark they both where done hiking and turned around to head back to the trailhead.
I felt sad but told them other spots to go glass from the road down to Antelope Flats boat launch. Real nice couple for sure.
Baretop Mnt. isn't really for a couple of rolly-polly types...…
So the young buck and I continued onward.
Some strong Rut action from years past and I told him about how a Bull Elk Rakes a tree
Nice post. What a fun trip
I have 19 NR points and would like to find a unit that isn’t necessary the largest bulls but has good access, lodging, lower overall pressure.
A Quality hunt for decent bulls
What do you suggest.
We got into 3 Velvet bulls just past the 3 mile Dogleg Ponderosa Pine tree
About 100 yards out so not the best phone pic,,,,,,
We decided to put the stalk on just to get closer for better pix
The breeze shifted and man did they get alert and the stare down began
Busted!!
Nothing but Bull Butts going away haha
Exciting for the kid though
I'll toss ya a PM Jay
"Baretop Mnt. isn't really for a couple of rolly-polly types...…"
lol!
It's big country and once ya get on top it is pretty dang Bare-----
We hit the 4 mile mark and took a break.
I gifted him a Browning Buckmark .22
The kid can sure shoot it accurately out to 20 yards.....
I took a 'short-cut' coming out as I wanted to show him the ole cowboys way of catching/trapping wild horses and then breaking them for riding, so I knew of this catch corral.
The elk really Rut hard on this terrace, but it's tough to get on them!
Only 1.5 miles to go to get to the JP Wrangler that is down there someplace.
Flaming Gorge in the background
Not a bad day of hiking/scouting decent round trip
I probably should have gone up there 20+ years ago when I first heard you talk about one of your favorites. So many gems you have tossed to us NR over the years. So cool there is another generation in tow. Good luck!
I promised him that if he did the round trip with me, that I would treat him to the famous Gorge Burger and large Fry's @ Flaming Gorge Lodge on the way back to our Airbnb
He got his Braces on last week so I felt kinda concerned ~ BUT ~ that burger didn't stand a chance! haha

An Ice Cold Corona back @ the Airbnb with a great view and shade!

Nice country Robb. Good luck this fall!
It's great to follow along on your excursions since we aren't doing much traveling back east. Thanks!
Good on you for taking the youngster out! He got to be in the outdoors, shoot his new gun, eat burgers.....He'll never forget that trip with you and what he learned. Well done.
Nice thread, Rob. Good deal that you’re getting to put in the leg work for a tag that you drew! Lots of guys on here rooting for ya on this hunt!
Cool country up there.
Been considering one of those units up there for elk...
Like the cabin. May need to look into that for a little trip with the wife for some fishing.
Nice thread. My son has the October tag on that unit.
Thanks for sharing Robb! Looks like great weather.
Great Pics, Robb...cool trip with the Boy!
Glad you guys were able to get into some elk up there! Looking forward to the next installment...
Thanks for sharing Robb! Looks like great weather.
Great thread Robb, always enjoy hearing about your adventures. Makes me very happy to see you getting your great nephew up there with you. Those youngsters are the future and that's a trip he won't soon forget!
Good on your for taking the boy! Reminds me of a trip to Alaska in '76 with my Uncle(took a float plane to a Forest Service cabin on Lake Clark)......……………….........….still have memories of that like it was yesterday! It was my first real 'adventure" as an 11 y/o kid.
Only one question: Where are the E-bikes?! ;-)
Thanks for the kind words and your thoughts
Adam, don't discount the south side of Goslin Mnt. for your son's hunt in early October,
Perry---they don't make a tandem e Assit bike !! haha
Some of you guys have good memories with your private contacts to me about the 17.4 miles packout I did on my last tag in this unit.
See what I mean in just 1 day kissing 8 miles now toss in going back and getting a bull off in 1 day leapfrogging loads----miles add up fast!
Okay Back to the trip,
Robb
I had a thread a while back about Elk Hide clothes and with the leftover elk hide I made 2 high lake/creek fishing gear shoulder packs.
For day 2, I wanted to take the young fella up on the mountain and see if he could catch his first ever high mountain creek Trout.
I gifted him 1 of the elk hide fishing shoulder packs and a backpack fishing rod/reel
He was excited!
We are on a completely different mountain now and had some chilly weather and even a skiff of snow as I was teaching him how to float the bait into slower moving pools along the creek
Yeah, I'm a Dangler worm creek fishing type guy! haha
We fished through a meadow and man did we get into the elk!
Kinda kool with the lite snow fall
Kinda kool with the lite snow fall
This is the very same unit I did that thread on about Utah OTC a while back
He was getting a pinch frustrated with snagging up and with missing to set the hook on the quick bites he was getting...….
I told him Patience Grasshopper!! haha
Bammmmmm!!
His first ever mountain creek Trout
While driving out in the early AM, we had this yearling cow moose way down low on the pavement, that just wouldn't go off the side into the trees...….but she did finally!
Back to the Airbnb Cabin
He had the whole upstairs loft to himself and it was kinda unique as it had a center walkway over the kitchen and living room, out to a private 2nd floor Deck
He could get 1 bar on his phone out on the deck, so he spent a lot of time out there
Take a leak and brush your teeth all at the same time!

His bathroom was kinda stylish------->
That wraps it up for this AM ladies and gent's
I tried to add the link for this Airbnb cabin but it has all my info so this is the best I can do, maybe search on Airbnb Manila, Utah?
I'll finish up mayana ~~ with some this-n-that type stuff.
Thanks again for taking the time to view All,

Looks like a great trip with your nephew, Robb!
Might have even influenced him to spend even more time out in the woods...
Thanks again Robb, Looks like we have a new Outdoorsman in the making.
Thanks for passing it on....he's a lucky kid!
Good on you Robb. Hey "Uncle Robb", are you adopting by chance? LOL
It reminds me of my very first time being taken out deer hunting by uncle. We (I was 12 at the time - and never been hunting before) walked out into the woods in the dark, he had me set by a tree (still pitch dark) and said he would come back and pick me up later and that I was to stay RIGHT THERE - he walked off into the dark! Are you kidding me, I was scared stiff, there was no way I could have even thought of moving. Did you know that a mouse moving in the dry grass in the dark sounds just like a grizzly bear.
Sorry Robb, didn't mean to horn in on your thread --- memories ya know.
More pics and story please!
No worries sharing your youth memories!!
One evening I was sitting out on the log swing chair reading Ron Niziolek's article in the new Bugle mag (pg 70) and it seemed fitting for this trip.
They have this like mini-white/black turkeys and I just didn't time it right to get the Tom in full strut but pretty kool looking turkeys
1 of the reason's I wanted to take Jaxon up with me is because his mom and my son Robbie would come up every summer while I ran my Llama bsn's on this Sheep Creek Ranch, when she was his age, so I showed him around the place too
The Forbes bought the ranch and turned it into the Forbes Family Farm.

The JP Wrangler did okay on mpg for the trip, doing 80 on I-80 doesn't help though!
That wraps up this photo/scouting trip and it was an enjoyable trip for sure.
