I get these are fundraiser tags, but I wouldn't pay that much just to hunt Iowa.
If I guy spends 16,700 dollars on a deer tag.......he can probably afford to drop 16,700 dollars on a hand of Blackjack.
JL.......The good thing is, you don’t have to.
I think these auction tags are a great way to raise funds for various organizations that benefit wildlife as well as hunters. I’m totally in favor of them. Now, if they would get rid of the ridiculous “celebrity” tags that seem to go to the same cast of characters every year, they could donate even more to auction off. Even better would be to make those celebrity tags available for some wounded warriors or sick kids, free of charge.
What are celebrities tags?
I always thought the celebrities were buying these. Almost certain they are. In the past I remember tags being given to celebrities to promote Iowa hunting or something like that. Didn’t know they were still being given out though.
Also known as "governor's tags" to promote Iowa.A crock of crap.
T.....there is nothing wrong with using these special tags for fundraising. What does the fundraising group pay to get these auction tags? Can any group get one or only select groups?
I haven't found a list of governor's tags for a few years-it takes some digging but it's public info.Last one I found even had Foxworthy,Bo Jackson the Missouri Drurys etc getting more than 1! Takes me 4 years now
There are tags that are given away each year to various groups and individuals. Some make money some don't
As an Iowa resident, I detest Governor’s tags. Should be done away with with . Cronyism at its worst. No issue with a handful of auction tags as they raise serious money for wildlife management.
MQQSE... I believe you are correct in that the celebrities were indeed, paying the full amount for the tags. I never stated they were being given the tags. My problem with it is the same people, mostly outdoor tv show personalities and their cronies, were able to get first crack at these tags every year. This was was in exchange for “promoting” Iowa’s deer hunting resources. (Like that needs to be done!)
JL....That’s basically what I stated. I’m not sure on what the organization has to pay for the tags. Your last question is a bit of a concern for some in the IBA as well. There’s some concern about all different kinds of “conservation” groups coming out of the woodwork, wanting tags to raffle off. I think there was some legislation in regards to these tags, but with the Covid crap, don’t know where it’s at.
The “Governor” tags are given to people to promote Iowa which is a total joke. The Auction tags are a fund raiser where a suitable organization gets the tag then auctions it off and the proceeds are split between the Iowa DNR and the organization. I have purchased a few of the Auction tags over the years for landowner clients but that was before these prices.
If you think these tags are a good idea talk to someone in Utah about the shit show that goes on thier. If you think you’ve got a good tag and limited people hunting in a unit- wait til u find out how many raffle/ auction hunters have the same tag. The average guy is put out thier- Big time. Iowa needs no promoting of thier deer herd. Draw a tag like everyone else!!!!
I inquired on Iowa DNR FB page and they actually answered-no Governors tags this year or last year maybe the Governor got the message :)
That’s encouraging if true, 4nolz!
.....but they might just call them celebrity tags now.....
