Bowsite Pop up adds???
So all of a sudden, every time I click on a post ... I get an annoying popup add for hunting gear from what I assume is a sponsor!?!?!
Is anyone else seeing this?
I'm seeing these too. None of the products/ Companies seem to be on the Sponsor list.
Just started with me. Very annoying. If that doesn't go away, I will.
Pat will be able to answer this question but I do remember him saying that he'd had multiple sponsors pull out this year due to the economics behind COVID. Maybe he's trying to recoup some lost revenue?
Yep, I just started getting them too.
It’s either this or a paywall for exclusive content
I just started getting them too.
Yep, gotta X out of it on the right side every post I click on. Definitely lame
Makes sense, as a lower-cost option for advertisement. It is an "obstacle" that you have to scroll through (on a PC), but I can learn to live with it, if it helps to keep the Bowsite afloat.
I'm sure Pat will chime in soon enough.
I can’t seem to get rid of them. When I try to x-out it takes me to the ad page. Very annoying! : (
This is what the add looks like on my phone, FYI
Not a big deal for me easy to hit that lil x
We lost 60% of our ad revenue thanks to Covid, Canada border closed, and archery industry consolidation. Sorry guys but this is simply a matter of recouping lost revenue so we can keep this site afloat. We agreed to a two month run only.
I can certainly understand. Gotta pay the bills. Maybe things will pick up next year. Guys that say I'm leaving well, see you later then. This is the best hunting site on the web by far.
It'd take a WHOLE lot more than this for me to stop coming to Bowsite. Besides, my right pointer finger needs exercise anyway....... ;-)
Like almost everything in life, it's not that big of a deal.
Also have them on my state board but they are not on the Leatherwall.
Ok- After some further “testing”, apparently I wasn’t hitting the right spot to X it out. Not a big deal now that I know how to do it.
It isn’t that bothersome. It only covers maybe 20% of the screen and it’s at the bottom so they don’t cover the screen where you can’t read what you are looking at. I just X out or ignore them
not nearly as bad as waiting on Coulee to finish his moose story.
Wouldnt tolerate it on many sites, but this is one that gets a pass. Im not opposed to a pay wall if the price is right. I've paid for ad free viewing on other sites. Having been here since forever and having worked in the industry, I am convinced many advertisers are missing the boat by not being here.
They are tolerable on the phone but pretty intrusive on my laptop. Covers over a third of the screen.
I get them but no prob to x them out. Totally understand Pat!
“ This decision was not made lightly, but it was necessary in an attempt to position Bowsite for upcoming changes. In the coming weeks, we will be communicating those changes to you. ”
I’m still waiting for the “communication”.....
Not a problem on this end. Hope your revenue stream returns, not just for you but all of the entities negatively impacted by Covid. GL!
Norseman. Shhhhhhhhh Comrade
With the crap this year has thrown at us, having to close adds on bowsite ranks pretty low on my list of complaints. Thanks Pat.
They are annoying and I can seem to find where to X out of them. Maybe closing the CF was not such a great idea...
No problem. Use the x if you don't want them.
I've looked at 10+ ads and there is no X on any of them.
It's in the upper right hand corner of the pop up box. Very faint, but it's there.
Look at the far right hand side of the ad in the light blue field.
Depends on the Ad background how visible it is but its there.
Set your browser to not allow pop ups from this site, better than xing them out every time you open a tread
So are these advertisers idiots? We're not looking at the annoying ads. We just click them off as fast as we can.
Doesn’t bother me much, but I’m on an iPad and it’s at the very bottom. I can see how it could be aggravating on a phone screen, but as said, hit the escape button.
How would you pay for this site if it was yours? Anything good isn’t free.
It takes up less than 20% of your screen. Don’t even have to X out if you don’t want to. Just scroll and read and ignore
Not really a “pop up”. Just an ad at the bottom.
Got my first pop up add when I clicked on this thread. DAMN!
No big deal to me If that's the cost of keeping great discussion and content I have no issue
The reason why it sucks so bad is that they hide their X. At least have the balls to put it up there where it is easily seen so we can immediately close it. Seems pretty chicken chit and something a democrat would do.
Do what you gotta do Pat. Guys this is a business and in order to stay in business it needs to generate income. If you watch YouTube there are ads, why would this be any different?
lol. if this is the worst thing I encounter this week I'll take it.....
If I didn’t know better from some of the complaining this sounds like another Bloodtrail challenge :) I wait until morning and hit the faint x then, unless it’s raining...lol
Has anyone ever purchased anything after being triggered by a pop up ad? I for one have never bought from a pop up.
I don't see any problem with the pop up ads.... anything to keep Bowsite on the net!! So far they are all hunting ads, just for us!!
I read every ad and have purchased a ton of stuff. What a bargain for these advertisers.
couldn't see the x either. clicked in the general area and it went away. maybe I need a verifier or check my peepers alignment.
Hell at our age we should be damn happy to have anything that pops up.
got a guy with a ad on the Wisconsin page don't see him in the sponsor list. not a pop up either. put in in a regular posting. suggested he contact Pat.
Easy to hit the X on a desktop. Hard for my fat fingers to hit the X on a cell phone. I'm batting about 50%. LOL>
So here’s how this stuff works...
The advertisers keep track of what it costs them to run the ads, and they keep track of how much money they make from people who either saw or clicked on their ads. They have data on every pair of eyeballs that have seen every ad and they know what website got them they eyeballs.
If their websites get no traffic and they see no sales, then they’ll stop running their ads here.... So Pat will either have to charge for access to the site, or you’ll continue to see ads that are less and less relevant to the site content.... or the ads will dry up altogether and the whole site will fold.
How long that’ll take will depend on how good the people running the ads are; if they’re bad enough, Pat’ll get stinkin’ rich.
So JMO (as a guy who does this all day, every day), you can help Pat by clicking on ads for stuff you plan to purchase or are at least thinking about buying. That way, Pat gets the ad revenue, the advertisers make money and they can track it back to here so that they know that this site is worth supporting (as a business deal).
You either support the businesses that support the site, or you support the site directly... or you do without, I suppose....
"We lost 60% of our ad revenue thanks to Covid, Canada border closed, and archery industry consolidation. Sorry guys but this is simply a matter of recouping lost revenue so we can keep this site afloat. We agreed to a two month run only."
See you in 2 months
Hey, at least you don’t have to wear a mask to look at ‘em....
I have been on this site since 1997 and understand who has to pay the bills and who is also responsible for maintaining this site. I support you Pat. My best, Paul
I understand and support the decision, but find it extremely annoying. I rarely post but likely will reduce visits. I'm one of those guys who be willing to pay a small annual fee to get rid of them.
I’m good with it so long as that one Magnus add from 10 years ago that ran repeatedly with sound and video for many months stays in the grave
Bou, I think that was a Muzzy ad. Must have been effective lol
My take on this from a viewer/user on several other related sites.......I'm not a fan of pop-ups for anything. One site I'm on has sponsor/supporter thumbnails off to the side of the page. They are always there as you go from thread to thread. However they do not block the main body of the threads. If one ad catches a member's eye, they can click directly on the thumbnail. IMO.....it might be more effective if that can be done here on BS. Here is an example from that site.
LW dont have em. Them fella’s go ape over this.
Mega Lame. Blame it On China?
RUSSIANS!!! And cow farts!
I've got no problem with "pop-ups" (or paying an annual fee) if that's what it takes to keep the site going.
To that point, the ACCUBOW ad that I just saw was pretty UK interesting.
I have no issue in a business owner doing what it takes to keep a business afloat. Businesses are in business to make money. Personally, the pop ups don't bother me and who knows, I might see something that catches my eye.
As of now, this site is free for us to enjoy and I appreciate that. But, as my pap used to say, "You could give away a million dollars to some folks in hundred dollar bills and they'd bitch that they had to hassle to break the hundreds".
I'll pay a yearly fee but pop-ups are no-Buenos. I'm out.
They guy’s who say they are leaving will be back under a new name ??
Times is tuff, and its times to move on. scentout
I’ll pay .
These things suck on Android!
I’ve been lurking around since 1998, and I thoroughly enjoy the BS ;) I’d pay a fee, I’ll even click the Hell out of the ads.... if Pat does a hunt giveaway at his new deer camp !!! ;)
Just kidding Pat, do what you have to do!
I've been here WAY longer than Pat ever wanted or intended ;?) I'd gladly pay a yearly "fee", it's the best Bowhunting site hands down, those fellas on AT can suck it.
"They guy’s who say they are leaving will be back under a new name ??"
...or they will lurk and still click the x on the ads :)
You guys shut up about the yearly fee and just keep on Xing!
"It's in the upper right hand corner of the pop up box. Very faint, but it's there."
I admit my eyes aren't the best but I had my 28 year old son and 22 year old nephew look at multiple ads. There is no X showing on my computer.
I'm having a hard time with this. I've been here since the 90's. The popups are beyond annoying. I'm a business owner so I understand hard times. But some of this is self-inflicted. Pat chose to close the CF, which was thousands and thousands of clicks a day. Bowsite lost a number of long time participants when the CF was closed. Bad business move. I'm guessing Pat made a small fortune on this site over the past 20+ years as well as free stuff, free trips, etc. Maybe should have put some of that away for a rainy day so the rest of us don't have to deal with ads stuffed down our throats. Another dumb business move. Until this is gone I'm out of here.
I agree.....small price to pay! I get a kick out of the keyboard warriors that say they are leaving;) Well bye!!
1/3 of my computer screen is the ad, but it must be working. I just clicked on the BW Hitches pop up.
Actually I'm beginning to like it. I shoot instinctively, and I'm so honed in now on the vague/invisible X that all I need to do is THINK about putting the mouse on it and it's gone!
Hey...when life gives you lemons, make lemonade!
If pop up ads are your biggest worries then you’re doing pretty damn good!
Maybe I am just mature beyond my age which is now 80 years but a very small price to pay for a great site which I have been on from the get go. Just like a little fly, flying around your head, just get up and leave, take a swipe, or deal with it. I will just deal with it. My best, Paul
Wouldn't bother me at all if the "x" wasn't so dang little! Pat deserves to make as much money as he can!
With all the stuff we've dealt with over covid, and all the other stuff in life for that matter, not a big deal. Go hunt.
doesn't bother me at all... any consternation about this is ridiculous.
That’s it!! I’m outta here! At least until I get back from my elk hunt! ;-). Seriously, not a big deal at all. Do what you gotta do Pat!
I get that you have to pay the bills. But there has to be a less annoying way. I will venture a guess that site traffic will decrease as a result of the ads.
I will continue to stay on this website and click the "x" if it comes to paying a fee then I'm out. Until then I will continue to use bowsite.com daily
Is closing a pop-up ad really that bad? With all of the BS that we've had to put up with this year due to Covid, I find this the least of the annoyances. I completely understand revenue or the lack of.
Pig doc. How’s the weather in Fraser today?
"Is closing a pop-up ad really that bad?"
It can be as time goes on. If anyone recalls way back when the internet was starting out, Walmart use to offer "free" internet service. The catch was you were obliterated with horrible pop-ups anytime you clicked/navigated the internet using Walmart's free ISP service. I fully understand the business side of BS and what keeps the lights on here. However having to get rid of the pop-up everytime you navigate the BS threads reminds of those early Walmart ISP days. That is why I posted that pic above from another outdoors website showing how to advertise for the vendors and still not require users/viewers to get rid of a pop-up. I thought it was a great alternative to keep everyone happy.
On the other side of the business end.....I wonder how vendors will interpret the various BS viewer comments in this thread?
My 2 cents on this topic....
Why would a business get rid of a portion of it’s readers if it was drawing visits?
If you were going to runs ads would this CF be the 1st place youd run them and make money there while keeping your best forum clean?
It isn't that big of a deal, I was just wondering if it was something with my computer.
I think the sidebar approach would be better, but it's not my site!
I love BS! and if necessary, I would pay a reasonable fee...
Thanks for a great site Pat!
Sites like this aren't free, Pat has to get the money to run the site somewhere!
Its really not that big of a deal. In fact I just researched Buck Forage Oats and some other products. Hell I will click on them all if it will help keep a great site.
I think we all know nothing is free in life & that includes bowsite.com. The sponsors pay for it or we pay for it. If they could slim down the ads vertically by 20-40% it might allow members to see the ad but also read the thread without exiting the ad.
"That is why I posted that pic above from another outdoors website showing how to advertise for the vendors and still not require users/viewers to get rid of a pop-up."
So....you lose 20% of your screen to ads, vs a pop up that you click to clear. And I swear to God, it's sounds like a bunch of ****ing whiney entitled millenials on here. Bitchin' about an easily cleared pop up ad on a free site. I've been here since '97 and the amount of info and knowledge is incredible. Certainly worth a pop ad for two months.
Ohio farms are not cheap. This is a small price to pay, actually no price To pay, for the best entertainment available online that isn’t morally corrupt.
I’d be interested in Bowsite 2021 Calendar, Bowsite bumper sticker, Bowsite T-shirt and hat.
Bowsite the worlds most informative bowhunting website!!!
Still NUMBER 1
I'm kinda with Bowbender here. Lots of entitled opinions here. No one has the right to be here. Pat can ban you. Pat can take this site down tomorrow.
Servers, computer equipment, etc. can't be too cheap. As well as the mental knowledge to code and do it all.
We don't get a free ride.
I'm not a huge fan of the popups, but it's not a big deal. I'd happily pay a small fee to not deal with them, but I completely understand.
Pat's got a thick skin, so I doubt any of the whiners are bothering him.
GF & Bowbender x2.
I am gladly going to click on the ads to support BS and then just close the ads. Unless it is to physically and mentally demanding... HA
Monster Muleys forum uses less than 50% of the available screen for threads.
"I'm kinda with Bowbender here. Lots of entitled opinions here."
Aren't you offering an entitled opinion here yourself. Just because people voice an opinion that may be different, doesn't make them entitled or whiney. IMO the entitled ones are the ones that expect Bowsite to be free. I would have no problem paying a monthly subscription for this great site. It would beat the hell out of popup ads.
Im on other forums where they are free but you deal with ads, or you can pay a fee and be ad free. It doesnt have to be all one way or the other. Bowsite was an exception on how unobtrusive the monetized part of the site was on the content part.
I hope it can go back to that but im probably staying regardless. A tweak so they took up less screen on a regular computer would be nice. Not bad on a phone.
I’m cool with them and capitalism. Pat can buy another farm for all I care as long as he shares a pic and a blood trail challenge! Bahaha, bahaha, and bawaa!
Txhunter58, I was simply stating a fact, why are your panties in a bunch?
The pop ups are annoying. What is more annoying are the guys who are pretending that they are not, and then us the whiny little bitches. What ever.
Why is LeatherWall clean?
"Why is LeatherWall clean?"
A lot of their heads would probably literally explode if they had to deal with pop ups and I say this as a stick and string shooter that frequents the LW.
They are mostly pop up adds for e-bikes. That is arguable morally corrupt! Look what they have done to Lou and Grey Ghost! ;)
"Just because people voice an opinion that may be different, doesn't make them entitled or whiney."
Absolutely correct. Unless of course you're gonna take your ball and go home and not come back for two months because of a pop up ad. THAT makes you a whiney bitch. ;-) 'Course that's just this guys opinion.
Guys....it's more than clicking on the ad. It acts just like a billboard and even if you click the X to take it away....you saw the ad. Value realized from advertiser. I don't like it, but it's do-able.
I must admit, I clicked on the accubow 2.0 ad. I didn't purchase it because i wonder how my phone will take the vibrations from the 60lb test i pull. looks kind of cool for a winter time thing..
I have never seen so many grown men that bitch, piss and moan about the littlest of things. If clicking on an X with your mouse is the largest hurdle you have to clear this week or even this month then you have got it made.
It will get better friends.
Then, the ads will go away.
So silly to bitch and moan about the pop ups. Given all the inconveniences surrounding COVID, get over it! I've never paid a dime for all the knowledge that I have garnered on BS and I'm darn glad Pat still has it up and going. Carry on Pat!
Typical bowsite thread. Half are bitching about the topic the other half are bitching about those bitching. LOL
annoying feature of the new pop-ups is that they show up when one wants to PM someone.
Probably the reason non of the pop-ups show on the Leatherwall is that the products advertised are of no value/interest to traditional shooters.
Let's make a list of things that could be advertised on the leatherwall.
I'll start: Rawhide boxer shorts.
It could at least be bikini or lingerie ads....
The ingratitude of some people regarding the pop-up ads remind me of the proverbial saying, "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth."
Pat has been kind enough to provide a "free to the user" format for many years. Some do not understand there is nothing "free" in this world. Somebody pays for other to have things free.
Hat's off and applauses to Pat for his kindness.
It really doesn’t bother me that much. In fact until you guys brought it up I hadn’t even noticed them. Just so used to ignoring ads my mind blanked them out and I wasn’t even hitting the “X” Here is what I am seeing. Are yours covering more of the screen? They don’t affect me seeing any of the things I want to read even if I don’t X them out?? This is what I see on my laptop
This is what I see on my phone
Pat has been kind to give us this for free?
Going out of a limb I'd say Pat has made plenty of money from Bowsite over the years. Just look at some of the hunts he's gotten to go on. I'm guessing all of them have been "business expenses" since he's done feature articles/live hunts on them all. It's the volume of users that's made him the money.
He's now having to adapt. Is what it is. He's in this to make money like any other business. I guess we will adapt too.
My, envy sure is a green headed monster ain't it. As Chief Technology Officer at Lincoln Financial Group, I'm guessing what small revenue that is generated by the Bowsite is inmaterial and covers the cost of running and maintaing the servers. And the really cool thing is any one of us could have created the Bowsite. But we didn't. Pat did.
Not worth worrying about. I wish I could click an X to eliminate the BS on Facebook like all politics and talk about protester groups etc.
Even more Aggravating than these pop-ups is when I search an ad on my phone, the same ad pops up on my wife’s phone and her laptop. Now that’s big brother at work and kind of scary
Even more scary, the other day my wife and I were driving and discussed a product. Never searched an ad for that product. One hour later an ad for that product popped up on my wife’s phone
This is what I see, so basically to navigate BS, it takes almost twice as many clicks. It is the little shit that is more annoying than the big shit.
Txhunter58 the other day a coworker was telling me about a woman she had met on vacation in key west that evening she poped up as a friend suggestion on Facebook
like the other changes over the years, the ads will seem normal pretty quick
i noticed most of you have lost all your stars, you might want to alert the editor or take this topic to the chat room
Appears to be the people bitching about the ads are the same as the ones bitching about the answers on the bloodtrail challenges....
It seems some of you need a participation trophy due to having to close the most pop-up ads. Closing the pop-up doesn't cost a thing other than a simple click on the "X". Pat said this was a two month run. If you're butt hurt on having to minimize an ad, just wait until this site is gone and nothing else out there remotely resembles it. All the whining and complaining then, won't bring it back. Good riddance.
"Going out of a limb I'd say Pat has made plenty of money from Bowsite over the years. Just look at some of the hunts he's gotten to go on. Pat has a real job besides his second job running Bowsite.
I bet they're here to stay
lol, looks to me like the CF is already back - Pat's kind of sneaky ......
Some of you guys need a real problem or two to bitch about. Geez.
I guess my only complaint so far has been I only have seen like maybe 3 different ads
Tow and stow A rest Don't remember the 3rd
Are you guys seeing different ones every time. I like just randomly checking some ads out but there all the same
I get ads for hot single women who hunt and fish in my area, and for good highland Scotch.
I understand the why. Nothing in life is free, "free" content on the internet isn't free for the most part... it will involve an attempt to coerce you to buy something. Such is life.
This isn't toooo bad, the popups. The very worst are the "skip this video ad in 4...3...2...1...." In fact those are so bad you often can and some do pay a fee to avoid them (and often access to full content.... heheheh)
If willing to sit through or deal with the kabuki then it is indeed "free". I'm a cheapskate...... and I love the bowsite. Prolly not going anywhere.
IMO rather than pop-ups..... the side bar ad buttons are much less intrusive and less frustrating while still keeping top of mind awareness. Doing so with none of the aggravation that might be attached to the company with a pop up. I, um, know folks that would make it a point NOT to deal with them for the aggravation and frustration dealing with pop up culture. A negative impression is what they take away from it. They just aren't as calm, forgiving and easygoing as I am I guess......
My wife Cortney and I really enjoy this site (especially the harvest threads, equipment insights, and BB's antelope photos - man, antelope are neat). I would click the "X" twice if I had to - its not a big deal to me. Thank you - Pat.
"Even more scary, the other day my wife and I were driving and discussed a product. Never searched an ad for that product. One hour later an ad for that product popped up on my wife’s phone"
This happens to my wife's phone also, and is one of the reason's why I still have a dumbphone instead of a "spy"phone! If I were her, I'd "Hillary" that damn phone with bleach in a nano-second and throw it out the window!
And another observation.....I guess some of you are actually reading the popups before you nuke them, so I guess the strategy does work. I honestly couldn't tell you what they are promoting.
why do this for 2 months. we'll get used to the x clicking.......................
ownership will get used to the income..........................
Just like Socialism???????
I think the ads are worse on the Archery Talk site. They are a lot more annoying.
I just went to AT and didn't see any ads. I did go back and find the world famous Ohio Booners / Ohio Giant thread and read some of it again. That will forever be an archery classic in lying, getting caught, flaming, spineless accusers and the memorable term "quiver sniffers".
I can't even find the x. My vote would be to charge an annual fee to use Bowsite & keep it pop-up free!
How much are you willing to pay? I'm asking everyone who wants to pay.
Pat would have to come up with a number to keep it pop up free. Each individual could decide then if they want to stay on Bowsite.
If I recall, Pat has stated that he makes little to no money from Bowsite. As stated above, he has an ACTUAL job that probably makes him decent money. I would tend to believe he isn't raking it in since there is a significant cost to operate, troubleshoot, keep security, and house the data of the site, yet for the time I've been here, intrusive advertising has been minimal. Maybe the big dog sponsors pony up a little more than I could believe... I guess those who think he's full of it can start their own bowhunting website?? Even with the atmosphere having taken a downward turn here, it is still an easy-enough click.
I have no issue with the pop ups.
Paying a few bucks would not be the end of the world. The problem with that would be, I'd guess less than half of those that post would end up paying and instead migrate to another forum . Then us that paid would have paid for a site that it is a skeleton of what it use to be.
I'd happily click before I pay.
Someone said it's socialism, that one confuses me, as marketing and providing a service that market forces are willing to pay for is basically textbook capitalism.
If there was a "get out of jail free" card, I'd consider something in the 25-50 bucks a year range. Outloud, that seems really cheap considering how much time I spend on here... But given what I've seen some other sites do, that seems reasonable.
That said, if the ad's were in a smaller but undeletable bar at the bottom or on the side, I'd forge they existed and move forward.
As others have said, Pat, this has been and is a great site. Really appreciate your (and the others - Charlie perhaps?) efforts to manage it and keep it going for all of us to enjoy.
Do you really think no income comes from this site.
This is a Public service not a source of revenue for anyone
We are fortunate to have someone willing to provide the opportunity to visit and enjoy the show
I use my phone to navigate the site. The little "X" is impossibly small. I hate the pop ups. I'd much rather pay a fee to make them go away. That said, these are 1st world problems and I think I'll be ok.
WRT to paying a subscription or membership fee on Bowsite, I went down a similar road on another sportsman's site (that as I recall was created as the result of a Bowsite issue). I was one of the earlier members there when the site started up. I was an active member for maybe 11 or 12 years there. After a few years, things started to get tight for the original owner/starter and the site was in jeopardy of shutting down. Some of the members decided to step up and take over the site and become the new owners/mods. In order to keep the site open, a solicitation was sent out explaining what was going on and money was needed to keep the lights on. Many folks, including myself, ponied up some money on a one-time basis just to keep the site solvent. Also....to keep current members around, attract new members to that site...and to help keep the lights on, there were often giveaways, raffles and contests....along with the new annual membership dues you had to pay.
It was a fun site. The members also did field reviews for things sponsors and vendors provided. You would get selected to try out a new product from a sponsor/vendor. You used it for a bit then come back and provide a first hand field review of the product to the rest of the members. I thought all of the raffles, buck contests, cam contests, reviews, etc was a good idea and I was ok paying the annual membership dues on top of the other money I spent there. It was a real fun site that kept your interest and participation peaked....I liked it alot. Some real good folks there. I think the paying and non-paying membership was over 10K when I left.
There was alot of money floating around from the members back to the site for the various things. I started to notice that and felt because the paying members were supporting the site with their own money, the site's books should be open to the dues paying members so they could see how their money was being spent on the site for the lights, raffles, giveaways, buck/cam contests, etc. I intentionally posted two hints the books should be open to the members and it was blown off. I came out a 3rd time and directly voiced my opinion that because of all the member's money that was moving around the site, the books should be open to the membership. It was a transparency thing to me....nothing to hide from the owners or members regarding the money moving around. After all....the paying members were the one's keeping the site afloat. When one of the new owners/mods came back and said they would not open the books (no transparency)...a little red flag was immediately raised in my head. I became concerned with that and quietly left. That was a couple of years ago and I won't go back because of that. I know other members held similar views by the PM/emails or two I got. I do not know if they stayed or left.
Did the owners/mods have to open the books to the paying members?? Some folks there thought differently from me and felt the owners/mod didn't need to open up the books paying members. They just a different perspective on it than me and that's ok....I was cool with their view.
Would that happen to Bowsite if there were fees or dues or subscriptions (with pop-ups or without)....I have no idea?? I just figured I share my experience as a former member on another site and how I viewed it.
If I was asked to vote on ad's.....I'd vote for the side bar idea I posted a pic of a few posts back. You had long-term paying ads to gin up revenue to help Bowsite keep going, there might be some product or service of interest to the members and there were no pop-ups. I see that as win for everyone.
I found the little X but would still pay a user fee to be rid of the adds. Now a days if you search for anything on the internet or click on an add you are bombarded with other solicitations. If I Google something my wife gets pop ups on her phone. Seems like everyone is watching these days. Just don't Google Blacktails like I was dumb enough to do a few years back. Had to explain myself to the wife!
Drnaln- You mentioning about explaining things to your wife reminded me of a similar situation. Years ago, my “elderly” father wanted to learn how to browse the internet. I simply showed him how to get on IE, and google popped up. I told him to type and what he wanted and have fun learning. He’s an avid golfer, and he called me the next day and said “ I was looking for new clubs. You wouldn’t believe what popped up when I typed in stiff shafts!” I still laugh out loud when we talk about that!
Perhaps keep it free for those that the pop ups don't drive them crazy; with an optional $10 year to keep it ad free for subscribers. I do that with the weather channel:)
Some guys think Bowsite is a not-for-profit? Lmao
That being said, do what you gotta do Pat! Stay away from the mambas
With the age of most posters in Bowsite you’d think they’d like anything that pops up.
Lol brad! Maybe a paid membership will come with a free trial of little blue pills.
If popups are needed to keep this site going, I am fine with them. I even looked at a couple that caught my eye.
"This is a Public service not a source of revenue" Yeah, a PHIL-anthropist. Sure thing.
Won't deal with these pop-up ads, but one might want to check out the DuckDuckGo web browser for more internet privacy. Like their search engine, eliminates a lot of the tracking one gets with Google search and Chrome browser.
I got no problem with them.......rock on, Pat!
They are worse on my cell phone.
Wouldn't surprise me if the site was under new ownership within a year.
The pop ups are so horrible (insert sarcasm). Seriously guys it's a website that costs $$ to operate never mind make a profit. It's capitalism at work. Embrace it as it works for you or vote for Biden.
Pats doing what he has to keep this site going for us that visit it daily we shouldn’t complain about the pop ups what do u get for free now days we should be thankful not complainers. We were sponsors before Covid hit every dollars a prisoner now but when things turn around we will be back on here.
I'm glad that I scrolled down & read Pats post. I was going to say something crude like: "lose those (insert very bad work) (insert another very bad word) ads!!!". I likely would have gotten banned like TBM.....
I get it, bowsite has always been free and pop ups have never been an issue, so I do my best to ignore it. Just wish it would be recoded to move them to the top of the page.
