Looking for suggestions for planting screening along trails and roadside on my property. Mainly along trails. I’m in zone 4 on what’s considered kingsville muck soil. Gets very wet in the spring but dries out badly by august. Any suggestions are appreciated.

I tried using Sunn Hemp for screening this year and that failed miserably. The deer love it and eat it before it gets tall. I scrambled and tried Egyptian wheat and that worked well, but I was two months late in the planting and it only got 5' tall.
Don't forget edible screenings like field corn and sorghum.

I’ve got one strip of Miscanthus that did extremely well, but it seems to be the exception rather than the rule, for me at least. It’s difficult to get it established (other grasses are the biggest issue) I’ve got a couple other stands of it that are marginal at best. Like stated above, I’d try to get switchgrass established, long term, and the Egyptian wheat does really well, if you give it plenty of nitrogen. It doesn’t hold up very well to a snow load, though. Especially if it’s a heavy, wet snow.
Not 100% sure, but I think Kanlow switch does better in wetter soils, and Cave-in-Rock switch does better on more well drained soils.
