Yes or no making P&Y
Whitetail Deer

I have and elk and a proghorn to get scored. Got thid deer on 11/14/20 its at the taxidermist right now. Think this guy will make the 125 minimum? If I'm getting two scored might as well get this one. Heres a few pictures.
I’d guess he’s a bit shy of making it. Congrats on your buck, nonetheless!
I think it’d be really close!
First picture I thought no way. By third picture I thought probably.
First pic was deceiving. From the looks of the other pics, I’d say he would. The difference in hisG4’s will hurt his score the most, otherwise he’s pretty symmetrical.
Very nice buck! I think the deductions might make him a little shy, but who cares?
I think you have one of those "gross over, net under" bucks.
Gotta agree, not in the first pic, but 2 nd and 3rd, yeah. Borderline...
Right side is a no brainer. But left side appears to dictate net score pretty much across the board. If I had to put money on it...my bet would be he comes up short. Nice buck regardless...congrats!
I think he will be very, very close. So hard to tell from photos. Congrats!
Very nice buck. If he does not make it still send in the $35 contribution to the club. They do good work and can use the support.
I would take it with you when you go. He’ll be close!!
If his left side matched the right, for sure. I'm with the "gross-yes, net-no" guys.
Like stated nice buck, but making book he'll be close.
122 is my guess 4 point side will hurt net.
Only one way to know for sure. Call a local measured and regardless of whether he makes it or not he’s a great buck. Congrats!
Tanks guys.. He is a 10. What i should of done was do a better job of and taken more pictures.
Who cares? He’s a fine buck to be proud of.
I agree with the others on the pics. The first one looked a little shy but the other pics push him over in my opinion. I ballpark him at 126". Let us know when you find out. Congrats either way!
First of all, GREAT DEER! Second, actual professional measurements done by a qualified person can yield some surprising results. Some deer score way higher/lower than first impression would have you believe. Get him measured and let us know! Congratulations on a fine deer!
The way I estimate score:
Look at weak side....his left antler has maybe 18” to 20” of point length, maybe 19” to 20” of beam length and maybe 14” to 15” of mass. Total is about 51” to 55” for the antler which looks weakest in all measurements to me.
Double that and you are at 102” to 110”. Add the inside spread of 16” and you get a 118” to 126” net P&Y buck. If honing in on a number I’d say 120 net.
For comparison, this Nebraska buck scored 126 3/8 official net by PY measurer
For comparison, this Nebraska buck scored 126 3/8 official net by PY measurer
I think that he will make it. Congratulations!
123 5/8 would be my guess, Nice buck, must make your book is what counts!
Very nice buck, congratulations! Good shooting.
Is the score and making some book that important to you??
Will you be disappointed with this deer, if it's a couple of inches shy??
Maybe it's just me, but I couldn't care less what my bucks score..
Congratulations on a nice buck, regardless of the score. If your happy with it, it's all that matters.
Nice buck, but I don’t think he’ll net 125. Guessing on the weak side tine lengths are in the 4,5,6,3 inch range which won’t get you there without extraordinary mass measurements. Nice buck though, love the width! Of course width doesn’t hardly ever get a guy any noticeable inches, but it sure adds to the “presence” a buck gives off.
print off score sheet from P&Y website, they are easy to measure
Nice buck, congrats to you.
I think it will make it.
FYI, I just measured an elk for a guy who got a score form online and measured it himself. He came up with 376. The official score was 360. I have no idea why he was so far off but just looking at the instructions and doing it yourself without having "official training" doesn't always work out so well.
This buck will be very close above or below. Just let an official measurer do it right so you know for sure. Even if you measure it yourself and come up short, you could be wrong.
Mass will be the difference if he makes it but with deductions I think it will be borderline. I just killed a nice 9pt in Iowa, he has 3 tines over 10"s and grosses 133"s but he nets just 125-5/8ths. I think you should be thrilled with a great buck and not worry about net score or the book! Congrats!! Shawn
I think he makes it. Congrats.
He's right there I think.
Gonna be a little shy IMO but I’m sure pulling for ya!
Hard to tell without seeing the body size to get true estimates...
Those Texas monsters...takes incredible bone to make up for them greyhound bodies??
Umm...if the score is important to you, why don't you just put a tape to the antlers yourself? You should be able to get close enough to know whether it's worth having officially scored, or not.
Matt
I think he will gross over 125", just not sure if he'll make it net. The rack is fairly symmetrical so deductions shouldn't take too much off your gross score. Bring him by an official measurer after the 60 day drying period is up.
Yea he will make it, very nice buck regardless
Ummm......I dont think Ed is sleeping or not sleeping on whether it makes book or not. And he didnt send a preshot picture to ask if he should shoot it, so im bettin he was happy with it. Sure looks like it in the pic..... Just makin conversation. But everybody is oh so thankful for the contribution of some. Even when its the same kind of worthless contribution every time.
Great PA buck, Ed. Congrats
I think he makes it. Can’t tell size of left antler. Get him measured as that fun also. Nice buck!
I am not good at scoring, but he’s a shooter in my book. Congrats!
Did you end up putting a tape to him?
The more important question is, "What was his name?" ;-)
This is my problem with record keeping. You killed a dandy buck. He's a heck of a specimen. You're obviously happy with it and, yet, it seems it may be forever asterisked in your mind by being a couple of inches too short.
I can't take the suspense anymore. Put a tape on him.
Owl, you have a point, but unless we can go back 200,000 years and do a reset on human nature, keeping score of everything is what humans do (except liberals when they organize school sports...)
I agree with above, just tape him quick. You can use a piece of para-cord and a ruler and get darn close. I have had several officailly scored but I have never entered one in any "book". Its a great buck and I like to find out a deers score as it gives others an idea of how big a buck is, as pictures can be decieving. I say this cause I would not think Pauls buck above would score 126"s, I would of said 115-120"s tops but knowing Paul(from the site only) I am sure the score is correct. Shawn
. Deer is at a taxidermist. I have to go get it, which will be a few days to a week or so. Sorry.
Jaquomo, Of course, you are correct but we have the ability to cognitively supersede basic impulse. I'm past excusing poor theory as just "human behavior."
Some people like lottery scratch tickets and powerball. I like looking at a live deer and if successful harvesting it...see if I was remotely close to correct. This goes for body size/age as well at gross/net score. I enjoy venison as much as the next guy. However, If you shoot a P&Y (I would hope it would be for everyone) its a great accomplishment to be proud of.
Dream big. Aim small. Miss small.
Be close within a few inches either way I bet let us no
I going to try and get the rack tonight but it may take a day or so to score it' with work and the nor'eastner snow storm coming. TIME!!!! :)
You should get an extra 5 points just for smiling in the picture. Nice buck!
Get your priorities straight Ed...........................................we NEED to know the score! ;-)
I put the tape to him, at least in my head. 128" gross, 124" net. So, like I and many others have said, really close. Great bow kill!
As long as this is taking, I’m gonna revise my guess and say he’s gonna be just short of making it now, due to ground shrinkage and the additional drying time! ;-)
t-roy, its getting colder out too and things seem to shrink in the cold, so I have heard :)
Teeton, I'm not a score person, but that's a great PA buck. Congrats!! Is it a WMU 3D PA buck if I may ask?
I like to know what an animal scores as it adds context. If a picture is worth a thousand word, then a pic and the score is worth fifteen hundred.
And really, taking a pic of your animal and posting it on Bowsite, Facebook or your local pub's wall is no different than knowing the score for conversation. The purpose is the same; sharing with fellow hunters.
Gross yes, net probably not...…...the right antler is there but the left antler is weaker and there is always a strong side and weak side. Great buck nonetheless, congrats!
A simple trick that an antler dealer taught me is to simply measure the weak side and double it......voila, net score after deductions. Sometimes the smallest measurements are not exclusively on the same side.
How long does it take to add up 124 and 7/8ths inches? ;-)
The official Archery Talk score is 147"
As long as he made your “book”, that’s the only book that should matter. Congratulations on a fine buck, Ed.
Its a nine point g3 on right none on left total deduction cant possibly make it as a nine. Cut the g3 off maybe.
It's a 5x5.....G-4's on both sides.
Pete, he has G3's on both sides. If he didn't have a G3 he'd only have 2 points on that antler.
^^^^ Very good explanation
In the pictures without the hunter he looks pretty good but going by the picture with the hunter as it gives some reference for size I believe it will be shy of the min score. I will say 114" as that is what Kelly would say!!!! :-)
Was going to pickup my horns :) this passed Wednesday but with the big storm I didn't make it. So made arrangements to pick up my them up tomorrow. So hopefully have a score this weekend. Ed
That is why the scoring kind of sucks!! They grow it, they should get credit for it!! Its a very nice buck!! Shawn
The deer get credit for it in nature. The hunters don’t in the ranking lists
Ed, it hasn't been 60 days, so that will be a green score.....right?
Good buck whether he makes it or not. Congrats !
The suspense is not killing me.
No. But, I’d shoot him everyday and be tickled pink.
Won’t be a green score by the time he’s done! Lol
This is like the hunting world waiting for the final determination on Milo‘s buck. the answer just can’t come soon enough.
The coronavirus vaccine was invented in less time that’s taken to discern whether that deer is 122 or 128
Re the OP, he looks big enough but maybe 'symmetry' will cost him the points to be P&Y. But heck, get him measured and then you will _know_ for certain.
My guess: 129 6/8 gross 122 3/8 net. What do I win if I’m right?
Nice buck, congratulations !!!
Well? It literally takes 5 minutes to get close on a score! Shawn
I’ve spent less time to score a deer than I’ve spent checking this thread lol
The suspense is killing me lol
I often don't check my draws for weeks after the results are available.
That way you can still dream.
Congratulations ...After all of this.. are you gonna actually enter it if it scores 125”?
When it comes down to it... that’s what makes any buck weather it’s 125 or 195 a Pope and young deer not the actual score
LMBO at Apaul’s last 2 responses! : )
I know Ed- he’s probably purposely messing with us! ;-)
First, I had to go get it, so i hope you boys keept your panties on during this time. :)
Ok ,, it's scored.
First its still green. But here it is. Gloss 130 ?/¹? net 121 ?/¹?
Ed
Great deer though. Well done.
Ok won't let u put score in the way i tried to post it.
So 130 8/16 gross and 121 6/16 net. Ed
Fine deer, and he makes "your" book, which is the most important thing!
EmbryOklahoma nailed the score! Thanks for actually following through and ending the suspense. Congrats again in a fine buck.
Make sure you have it measured by the P&Y measurer when you have your other two animals measured. You never know for sure until it’s “officially” measured. Congrats.
Bright side. When you’re out next season (assuming all of us have the ability to replay a hunt within our minds) you’ll know when the next one walks in as you should have that comparison burned into the memory banks.
He’s absolutely a great deer any hunter would be proud of!
