I have been thinking of attempting a back packing bear trip in the greys river range of Wyoming.

I have elk hunted the area in the past but have never seen a bear. However I was never trying to spot them and wouldn’t know where to look. I was thinking of an August trip.

So I’m wondering if anyone has experience or maybe someone who has maybe mule deer hunted seen them could chime in with some pointers. Mainly what elevations would they be at during that time of year? Would they be up high above tree line? Do they prefer north or south slopes etc etc.

Look for food sources in the fall, south facing slopes in the spring.

I know Rob with Non-Typical Outfitters gets some gagger blackie's Spot-n-Stalk in the Grey's area.

I'm pretty sure his are Spring Bears though.

Good luck, Robb

Actually, planning on being in the Medicine Bow in May for bear and back in the fall if I don’t connect. It’s a good way for me to have a reason to scout for elk in years that I don’t draw a tag.

Not sure it is a pointer but my brother and I have elk hunted the Wyoming Range for 10 years... we see multiple bears over a 5 day hunt every year.
