Well crap. Had a rough year and a half stretch of broken bones riding motocross (ribs, collar bone & both wrists). Finally just started shooting again recently. It was great. I also took time off two wheels and tried a safer sport...skiing with my kids.

So of course I promptly broke my scaphoid a week ago...again. Scheduling a surgery now to have it screwed back together and a bone graft. Anyone else have this done? How long were you in a cast? How was the pain coming out of surgery?

If I were you? I’d stick with letting Evil Knevil do the daredevil stuff ;) best wishes on a speedy recovery!

My youngest daughter had a cyst inside her, actually more of a void in the middle and it started hurting after a fall when we were skiing.

Ended up having surgery and they packed it with cadaver bone.

She has limited range of motion and it still bothers her some.

I had to google "scaphoid" LOL

Length of time immobilized following scaphoid surgery is pretty variable. It all depends upon the quality of the healing. The scaphoid bone is notorious for slower healing times. Surgical fixation typically leads to faster healing. That said, you could be immobilized anywhere from 6 to 16 weeks. X-ray signs of healing will be the determining factor for when you come out of the splint/cast. Following that, you will likely be sent to physical or occupational therapy (usually with a hand specialist) for another 4-6 weeks to regain mobility and strength. The longer you're immobilized, the longer it takes to get back to "normal". Listen to your surgeon and therapists. They will likely have plenty of experience with such a problem. Be positive and best of luck!!

Bummer. I am in no position to opine on your healing with this, but I’ve had enough fun in my life to know if things to about dealing with pain, so I will just pass along to you the two most helpful thoughts that I can have when in pain. Because JMO, the worst thing about pain is the fear that it’s going to get worse.

#1 - It’s not gonna kill me.

#2 - OK. It’s not gonna get any worse, so if I made it through the last minute, I can make it through the next. Just keep breathing.

Good luck with it!

I broke my scaphoid and two other bones in my wrist. That night in the ER I was told I might lose my hand. As a very avid rock and ice climber, as well as enjoying many other outdoor pursuits, this hit me extremely hard. Thankfully I was able to fly out to see a very skilled hand surgeon and he placed what he termed a "$10,000 screw" in my wrist. The several days after surgery were the worst pain of my life, without any doubt. I was on heavy painkillers and I still kept thinking that I wished I were dead since the pain was just unbelievable.

Eventually the pain went away. Getting off those painkillers was rough as well.

Here I am many years later and I have full use of both of my hands. I can't quite bend my one wrist all the way back but I'm able to do everything I was able to do before. Good luck with your surgery.

That’s rough. good to know you got through it ok. I don’t have to worry about the pain killers because they won’t even prescribe them anymore. That’s made the last couple breaks and my last hand surgery extra rough! Gauging by how much these wrist injuries hurt, I project it’ll be a few days of “suck”. I’m going to channel the pain energy into the Utah draw system to ensure I draw an archery tag to look forward to.

Cheers!

Think I should change my username since I won’t be riding a YZ250F anymore!

My son had this when he was 16, from falling off a roof. A very fancy titanium screw brought the broken bone together. He was in a cast for about 8 weeks, then a soft cast maybe a month longer. As mentioned, this bone is slow to heal.

Tough break, hopefully you draw an awesome Utah tag to help numb the pain of rehab a bit.

PTArcher gave some good insight. As an X-ray Tech I can tell you that scaphoid fractures can be tricky. First off, they aren’t that common in older people, usually younger males, but motocross probably changes the odds on that. Not saying that’s you are old;) The location and any displacement of the fracture usually determine the treatment. These fx’s can be slow to heal, part of the problem is that the blood supply to the bone is slightly complicated which depending on the fx location can lead to issues.

Sounds like you know what they plan to do. I’d be careful to follow the advice and do whatever therapy is recommended, this is very important. Good luck with your surgery and recovery!

My daughter broke her scaphoid bone playing basketball in high school. Played basketball season and softball season before getting surgery. I think it hurt but she functioned at a high level. It was misdiagnosed and finally healed slowly.

My wife did after ditching on her MTB. I want to say 6 weeks in a cast. It ended her deer season that year as she couldnt hold the bow to shoot, sadly.

Similar recovery to many here. Will add that on cold days the screw aches and I try to keep clothing covering it when sitting on stand. Had random pain as well but that improved with time.

Had it pinned together last week. Holy balls did this little damn thing hurt for the first 4 days. Honestly didn’t expect that (and only had Advil for help). At least recovery is officially under way. Anxious to get after it when the time is right.

Dirt bikes are a great way to destroy your body. I’ve seen many a mangled body as a result of them. Scaphoids are notorious for not healing right because of their poor blood supply. Do what your ortho and PT say or you will probably regret it.

Beat of luck with with a full recovery. Stick to hunting as a hobby. Less injuries.

I'm more worried about your missing pinky!

Hope you heal well. Like Idyllwild statet, them things can be dangerous. I ran Yzs for years and moved on to pavement. Saw a lot of broken bones and a few who didn't make it. Need to be careful on em but they sure are fun!

My son reruptured his ACL and broke his scaphoid on the same fall on his return to College basketball. He was in a cast for almost 3 months, X-ray showed little healing...so the Doc. decided to place a screw in it. Since then it’s healed very nicely.

My son broke his playing basketball and unfortunately the first surgeon wasn’t very good and made things worse. Second surgery was needed to fuse together the broken pieces and there is some limited range of motion, but he isn’t effected too much shooting his bow. He will soon graduate PT school and knows how to deal with it.

Broke mine during basketball practice back in college, I had surgery end of May and was bowfishing, end of July or beginning of August. Had to do a lot of rehab to get to that point.
