Big Utah Shiras is official
Moose

I had my UT moose officially measured last weekend. (Rick and I also had our AK moose from 2012 scored; both made P & Y). The final tally was 160 4/8, which makes him all time B & C. The all time record bow kill in UT was 167 something, until 2019 when a MONSTER was killed scoring 190 plus. Definitely one of the coolest adventures with amazing friends that all got to contribute and share the experience. DJ
Gonna be hard to top that hunt! Congrats.
Congrats on a dandy bull, DJ!
Congratulations on a great Shiras!
That’s a gorgeous bull!
But I think I got a little bit lost in there somewhere… you’re saying that the B&C record bull is 30 inches smaller than the P&Y record?
There’s just so much about the scoring systems that makes ZERO sense to me… Like how can there be whitetails that score higher than a book-smashing Shiras??
He is saying to make a B&C “all time Award “level the minimum is 155” for a Shiras, not a “record” B&C Bull.
So the state record 190+ would be the largest killed in UT
GF, Wildwilderness has it correct. The 190+ bull killed by an archer in 2019 is the #1 bow kill in UT of all time. I'm not sure if he's #1 overall or not but what a beast.
DJ
Thanks, guys… I will need a minute to puzzle that through, I think! I am utterly ignorant when it comes to the scoring systems and what these various “levels” mean…
Do you things I can tell you for sure, though… 1) that is one damn big moose and 2) it doesn’t look quite as big as the one that my brother and I saw when the bull in question appeared to be about 4 milliseconds from deciding to stop the snot out of my brother.
I’m sure it IS bigger, but under the circumstances....
Beast of a Shiras bull! Congrats DJ!
Nice job! Did you tell the taxi to hurry up with my 2019 moose??? haha
You guys did Great!
Congrats again,
Robb
Congrats on a great bull moose!
Congratulations! Hell of a bull!
Great scoring bull, congrats. Super tough & rare to take a Shiras that qualifies for B&C.
Did I miss a previous write-up on this hunt?
Edit: Ok I found it and yes I did miss it, congrats again....
Big Utah Moose Down
GF- Where did you see that moose in question? FYI Shiras moose are the smallest of the moose subspecies, so a "Very Large Shiras" would be considered "Average" for an Alaska Moose. Here are the comparative minimum B&C "all time scores" to go in the book-
Shiras- 155" Canadian- 195" AK-Yukon- 224"
Beautiful Shiras bull, looks amazingly symmetrical !
Beautiful bull.... and the best meat that you will ever eat! Congratulations...
Dj, Post the score sheet and how about some video? I'm to stupid to do it!!
Congrats DJ, and to you as well Rick on your entries!
Moose scoring is strange to me as well, pretty basic for such a large set of antlers.
You need at least forked brows to get better paddle length then it is spread and number of points. Paddle width does not impact nearly as much as the 15-20 inches you lose if they are spike brows.
I don't necessarily agree but it is what it is.
@WW - we were in North-Central CO, not too far from Jaq’s stomping grounds...
He was probably just a twink compared to the one at the top of the thread, but they all look a LOT bigger when they’re pissed off at you, personally, they’re just a few yards away, and they’re still deciding whether to kill you or not.....
Some days a .58 just doesn’t seem big enough....
Congratulations !! One awesome experience and one awesome bull!
Great animal but sounds like an even better "experience". Congrats on both!!!
Great bull! Huge congrats!!
I'm going to go back and read the original write up
Looks like they are adding 1 more Non-Ressy tag in that unit Rick (2 tags 2021).
With any luck ya guys might be back this fall--------->
Good luck, Robb
Robb, I'm in but I'm not making plans yet:) you know the odds Dj beat to draw that tag but as you say, gotta believe!
Thanks guys I appreciate the kind words. Elkmtngear has a great eye, very symmetrical only 1 2/8 in total deductions. I had two sets of criteria for the hunt: 1) I wanted to hunt a bull that was over 40 inches wide and 2) the bull needed to at least have double brow tines on each side. We knew he was over 40" but couldn't believe he was over 50 when we measured back at camp. DJ
Awesome way to go. great bull! Big moose are awesome. Here is a pic of my Colorado bull I arrowed couple years back. He officially scored 171” net
Ermine,
That's a stud! Congrats.
How wide was he?
Ermine,
He is a stud, do you know the age??
DJ
According to parks and wildlife they said he was 4 years old??
Should a gave him 2 more years ?? That's a Great bull!
Nicely done. On my Colorado bucket list for sure but with 50,000 applications and only 150 bull tags, the odds are slim to none even with max points.
Wow, mine came back at 9, crazy.
That’s awesome! Congratulations
Yea I don’t know if that is a legit age thou. Have a taxidermist down the road who killed a 155” B and C shiras few years back. Colorado aged his at 2 years old lol. So maybe these bulls are just born with horns. I don’t know? They do tooth aging. But not sure on accuracy or if maybe they are inputing the wrong numbers.
Utah actually has the teeth aged. Not sure about other states?
"Colorado aged his at 2 years old lol".
Hmmm...maybe the same folks aging moose, are the ones counting ballots... :^?
elkmtngear........if that was the case, that bull should be 19 years old! ;-)
Wyoming ages moose using teeth as well. Can't be trusted IMO. My bull was 38" wide. Would have been closer to 42" if not for a bent beam. Wyoming aged him at two years old. In their defense, I did break one tooth during extraction. May have affected the results?
Moral of the Storey is if it's big its big. I don't care if it is 2 or 10 lol.
Awesome bulls gents!
Congratulations!!!
" On my Colorado bucket list for sure but with 50,000 applications and only 150 bull tags, the odds are slim to none even with max points."
And this is the year that all the 3+0s pile on because of the change in submitting the tag price up front.
The draw odds were ridiculously bad but lightening strikes every once in a while. As time passes it is surprising how many OIL tags get drawn by people I know.

Wow! What a spectacular bull! Congratulations!
What an awesome Shiras bull!
