No whitefish where John is. Looks like a gizzard shad, of which there are plenty.

I was disappointed to learn that bald eagles are mostly scavenger birds. I always pictured them as great hunters until I moved to Iowa right next to the Mississippi River. They just gather around the roller dams and eat dead fish all day.

I’ve seen eagles on road killed deer a few times. Yes, they scavenge a lot.

So are you gonna fault them for not being stupid?
That’s easy money for them. Almost ALL predators are delighted to steal or claim a kill.

Great pics! Thanks for posting. So fun to watch birds of prey. I once worked on a place that had a pond which always held ducks. A pair of Golden Eagles learned to anticipate them flying when we drove by and I saw them stoop on ducks numerous times. They usually missed but on two occasions I saw them snatch a duck in midair. Really amazing to see. Another great adaptation we observed was that the ducks started just swimming to the far side of the pond instead of flying.

I have an eagle nest pretty close to my house. They started working on the nest in January. They are catching fish in a nearby stream and river. I think they now have young and I will have to fire up my Gator and see if I can get some pictures. They are way up high on a steel Electric tower. Year before last they had three young and last year it was two. During deer season, when I field dress a deer I take the guts, in a bucket, to the field across from my house. The eagles watch for me to do this and it ticks off the buzzards since they have to wait in line.

Very nice photo work. What is your camera equipment set up?
From: JohnMC

Buffalo my camera is a Canon 90d. I think all those pics were taken with my Sigma 150-600mm Sport. But the baby owls I have photoed with a Canon 70-200mm 2.8 it possible that one was with it but would have to go back to computer I originally download to be sure. The other lens I use is a Canon 24-70mm 2.8. Camera equipment can be a rabbit hole as bad as archery equipment. But it is a fun way to “hunt” when no season or tag.

Very nice! I’ve seen hawks knock ducks out of the air before. Even saw one hovering over a ditch hunting them and when they flushed the hawk would dive bomb them.
