One thing I checked when I pulled my tag was the Kill data on Bowsite. It average shot on moose is 30 yards and average recovery is 115 yards. These answers seem to solidify that average.

Bow Bullet beat me to it. Hopefully some day I'll draw a tag and actually fling an arrow at a moose. But I'm not holding my breath.

There has to be some good stories of those shots under 10 yards! I couldn't imagine standing that close to a huge animal!

I like them close. There's little which compares to having a large bull tilting and posturing at under 10 yards. When they take a couple steps and suddenly it's 5 or 6 yards...things get really intense. From a kneeling position, I killed a bull with a 6 yard upward shot. My first-ever bull was a 12 yard shot into the chest. After taking the arrow the bull ran past and behind me, nearly running over my partner. We found blood spattered on the tiny spruce he was using for cover.

From: Kurt

Alaska: First bull at 30 yds. Second bull was 3' almost straight up into his chest. I was crouched down in the river and the bank and the bull walked right above me on a river bank trail. I could have touched his front hoof prior to the shot.

BC: First bull was 35 yds. Second bull was at 20 yds (thanks to Ambush for calling him in)...then some close follow-up arrows in thick stuff.

Wyoming: 50 yds

Moose up close are dang exciting!!!! Then then work starts.

Moose, like sheep, seem to give up and die easier than other species such as elk.

This is encouraging info, I appreciate this post. I have a AK moose hunt booked next year and I'm really struggling deciding whether I'm taking my recurve or compound. I want to take my recurve but then again this is a big trip and expense and I don't want to regret not taking the compound. If I can get a moose inside 30 yards I'm comfortable with the recurve and it sounds like that is very possible!
