I will be on Kodiak August 1, God willing. This makes 8 of the past 9 years hunting deer in AK for me. This will be my first hunt on Kodiak Island so I hope it's a good one.

Who else is hunting Sitka deer this year?

From: JTreeman

I’ll be there in Nov. Third trip to Kodiak plus once on POW.

I’ll be on Kodiak goat hunting again this year, but with three deer tags in my pocket I’ll definitely have my eyes peeled a bit lower down the mountain as usual.

Best of luck! Had an opportunity to go this year...but drew an Iowa tag. I'll be there November 2022.

Last November we had a rough go at finding bucks and the goat hunting was a bit sketchy without crampons. The bears were pretty fiesty, wish we had gone south more and skipped the goat part altogether.

I’ll be there around Thanksgiving, but gun hunting, with an outfitter.

Gonna finish my deer slam!

For you guys doing the early hunts on Kodiak....I hope you're taking your fishing poles for the salmon runs!!

That is the reason for wanting to go early!

Aug 1 is early... The big bucks wont finish growing for another week. We have killed a few first week of Aug and the tips were still soft. But the hunting is great, and fishing on Kodiak is as well

Heading up in November for my first of hopefully many Alaskan hunts. Can't wait for the adventure, I know it will be a great time with a great crew. If I have enough fun I might even leave a buck for iceman :)

Is the freezer storage place still up and running at the Anchorage airport?

From: Nick Muche

Have not heard of that JL, but I guess it's possible.

Nick.....ya....I've used it a couple of times. It's a good and convienant deal if you have meat or fish to bring back.

I'm looking into this for 2022 or 2023. I have heard of Homer Ocean Charters. Can anyone recommend any other outfits to look into for boat based hunts on Kodiak? Please PM me if you are willing to share info.

I was in AK a few weeks ago and the Frozen Storage is available at the Anchorage Airport. Open from 4AM to Midnight. I lucked out. When I arrived with 3 25# boxes of fish the sign said "freezer full". I waited in line anyways and thankfully a few guys were behind me pulling theirs out so I got to store mine for the night.

The bucks we shot in early August were still pretty soft and seemed a long ways from shedding. On POW they shed around the 7th of August. Looks later on Kodiak, but I would like to know more.

From: BlacktailBob
29-Sep-21
They don't all shed that early on POW. I'd say its more typically around mid month for most bucks on the average year. Early springs they do tend to shed earlier. As you know, I've never hunted Kodiak in the summer, so I couldn't say on Kodiak. Previous opinions are based upon 25 plus years of direct observation.

29-Sep-21
That’s what I stated above- the antlers don’t get hard til 2nd week of August on big bucks on Kodiak- but it’s a great time to be out there!

We went in mid October for the first time. Awesome trip, and awesome weather aside from a windy night that crushed our tent. It was a tough bowhunt for the most part. My buddy picked up a rifle and shot this one on day 6. I blew a shot opportunity that day with my bow also and then killed one with my bow on day 7, or at least we thought I did. Watched him do a death tumble 500+ yards down the mountain and by the time we got to him, he was missing. Best guess was a bear drug him off? A pretty dejected, long walk back to camp in the dark that night.

I will be back again. I’d say it was definitely one of my favorite hunt I’ve done to this point.

Looking at the photo’s it looks like my choice in KUIU gear was spot on. What is the choice of boot style for hunting the island? What size pack do you guys recommend? My son and I are looking to do a trip up and good luck to all that are there or going yet.

TIA

My boots and pack are the same I use for any elk hunt. I wore my Hanwag Alaskans the most. Thought they might be too stiff but they worked great in the steep stuff. My other pair were Lowa Caminos. I used toe warmers on the coldest days.

My pack was a Kifaru Stryker. Just needed to carry an extra layer or two, plus rain gear, lunch, and be able to pack meat.

28-Nov-21
That’s a great forkhorn, Robert!

I’d post my two that completed my deer slam, but they’re rifle kills.
